I don't understand this phenomenon. I won't even answer my phone while I'm driving, much less text.

/then again I'm slightly blonde and know my limitations

mudpants: We need stronger laws against texting whiledistracted diving.

There was a recent study by AAA that found that even using hands-free technology is enough of a distraction to make people drive measurably worse.  And people using voice-recognition to control their phones or vehicles do just as poorly as those who take their eyes off the road to accomplish the same task.

2 years ago I was rear-ended (not badly) at a stoplight. I was looking in the rearview mirror & saw her coming too fast, then I saw the front end dive as she braked, but it was too late. She got out of her car still texting & claimed she didn't see me until it was too late. In the middle of a sunny day.
I didn't talk to her, just waited for the cops to show up & told the cop I couldn't swear she was texting since I didn't see it, but he might want to check her phone.

They need to treat it like a DUI with license suspensions and jail time and large fines since it's been proven to be as bad if not worse.

Anybody stupid enough to type on something the size of a pack of Marlboros while driving well over a ton of steel, glass and plastic is gonna get their ass handed to them, eventually.  Just don't take anybody with you, hep kids.

Could this be used as an argument for a ban on car-pooling?

I find that I talk to people that I'm in a car with and they to me.  Is that not also a distraction for the driver?

When you are talking to a passenger in your car, the passenger can also see if there is danger ahead and shut up so they don't distract you.  When you are talking on your phone the person on the other end has no idea what is going on so they continue to talk as your driving situation is constantly changing which adds to the danger.

MNguy: how about changing the radio station? Eating? Talking to a passenger?

Well we can start with banning texting while driving and then move on from there.  b bu but there are other distractions isn't an excuse to sit back and do nothing.

I have a friend that insists on making eye contact when he's driving.  Seriously,  I don't need to look at you while we're talking in the car.  FFS, just drive moran.
