Popcorn Johnny: Yeah, I'm sure it was her idea and not her parents whoring her out for attention.

Just as you can home school your children and raise them to believe the Earth is 5,000 years old, you may raise them to be tolerant of others and to oppose bigots. It's called parenting.

Everyone that says this little girl doesn't understand the situation because it is bigger than her:

My niece and nephew have been raised in a Christian household. One is five, one just turned seven. They understand gay and lesbian, and even transgender. They don't get all the mechanics, but it's a topic that comes up a lot, going to church quite often and all.
My brother and his wife have taken the stance of "Some men like men, some women like women. Some men like women and some women like men. Some men feel like women and some women feel like men. It's how people are made. Other people don't like that and are afraid of people that are different. Sometimes they are hateful and hide behind the bible. It is never ok to hate someone for being different than you."

It's simple. You don't have to understand the mechanics of a sexual relationship to understand simple dynamics of a relationship, right and wrong, love and hate.

When I was five I watched too much news and heard that there was a pollution problem and took it upon myself to clean up my neighborhood with a garbage bag and a glove. My parents had nothing to do with it and it is still something I get made fun of today, lol.

Don't think that 5yos don't have a grasp on issues that are wrong in the world.

also, i struggle to see how any adult who teaches their child to stand up against empty hatred is wrong.  So this talk of using a child for ones own ends seems just as empty to me. Isn't that what we teach our children?  The things we are willing to stand up for?  How is this wrong again?

Fine, whatever, but the Director comes across as a new age idiot:
"Jayden represents the natural humanity we are born with," Davis Hammet, Director of Operations at Planting Peace, added. "We come into this world compassionate, caring beings and only become hateful if we are taught to be."
Clearly he has never been around any small child.  Compassionate and caring are things that need to be reinforced.  Selfish and self centered are more like it.

Just how much money is Opposing Views paying Drew these days? Because it is not a good enough news source to justify all these greens.

I tend to agree that sticking 5 year old in the middle of this is inappropriate.

WBC has done more to advance gay or any other causes than any organization I recall.

5 year olds, adorable for their innocence, have zero knowledge or interest in such matters.

The trolling WBC I mean. They need to have the piss taken out of them.

I'd settle for taking a piss on them.

Not unfortunately, but beamingly proudly. The fact that our country is so free as to allow idiots to out themselves should be something that we all cherish. WBC is a bellwether for the state of this country, as long as they are allowed to be as offensive as they can possibly be without being shut down by the government I know any of the less trollish activities I engage in will also be protected.

Now if only we remove the other restrictions on speech that currently exist we would be going in the right direction.

This.

As father of a 5 year old daughter I can tell you my daughter doesn't know about Westboro Baptist church, she doesn't know what murder, hate, being gay, being not gay is. Why? Because she's freaking 5 !!

I've never met your daughter, and probably never will, but if I had to guess, I'd wager she knows more than you realize.

You're also using circular reasoning, by the way: "I know my 5-year-old doesn't know about homosexuality because she's only five!"

They don't seem very tolerant of the WBC.

I'm sure the attendees at Fred Phelp's funeral would appreciate an ice cold glass of lemonade to assuage the flames of hell.

But seriously -- and to address most of the thread -- what about parent rights? WBC has kids out there with signs. Somebody on the opposing side pulls a tit-for-tat and they are held to a higher standard of tolerance?

Why?

It seems to me that most people without a dog in this fight (gay rights) hold the LGBT community to a higher standard than folks like the WBC, yet couch their comments in the foxhole of the First Amendment as a way to pat themselves on the back that they tolerate the WBC.

I tolerate them, too. And their right to use kids as props.

Can't have it both ways, folks.

I also agree.  Perhaps this is a teachable lesson for the 5 year old that the best thing to do with asses like the WBC is to ignore them.  But most can't.  Because trolling the WBC is easy and doesn't require any real effort.  It makes people feel good about themselves without accomplishing a damn thing.  Like most things extreme liberals take on.

How far have we come when selling pink lemonade for peace and equality is considered trolling?

I'd be thrilled if this was how the WBC went over its Constitutional line, finally got out-lawyered, and had the shiat sued out of them.
