Sarah Palin has converted to Islam now? Huh. I did not see that coming.

2013-06-16 07:57:43 PM
Right, because the first part of that reference is "Kill them all" because that's how you let god (or Allah) sort it out.

May Allah bless her poor, dear, sweet heart, but she tries so very hard...

Until we have a commander in chief who knows what he's doing, well, these radical Islamic countries aren't even respecting basic human rights

That didn't stop Reagan from helping what would eventually become the Taliban.

There's long been an isolationist streak to US conservatism. It seems to counterbalance Jingocon "we should go kick ass wherever we think it needs kicking" with Xenocon "all the little brown people are scum who should die" to get "Why should we care when little brown people just are killing each other, and not anyone important?"

Oh come on now. It wasn't just Reagan. Iran's Fundamentalists only gained power AFTER the most democratic Middle Eastern regime was ousted to put the Shah back in power when they went all kooky and nationalized all their oil fields. Iran was working on being a fairly progressive democracy back in those days, but hey, if you're going to piss off BP, you have to know that there's consequences to that, right?

We've helped fuel and arm these Fundamentalists over the years, because they served a purpose. Or we supplied their sometimes allies like the IRA with direct funding by private citizens who then used said cash to buy up arms, help set up camps, and cross train folks, because it was a dang site easier to get folks together for training across the spectrum, than holding them for JUST one sect or another.

It's not that the Middle East is a den of turmoil, there are folks reacting hard against things that they are seeing. Be that in Israel. Be that in Afghanistan. Be that in Iran, or Iraq, and certainly folks are riled up in Pakistan as well. And they have reason to be worried. They have reason to believe that folks are looking to loot their country and establish economic servitude upon a chunk of the populace. For all the gnashing of teeth here, most violence in the Middle East is committed against one another--and folks have reason to do so. Not always good reasons. Not always finely tuned reasons, but it isn't just that they're asshats who want to shoot folks--OK, maybe in Afghanistan and in Syria, that might be the case, but let's face it, at this point, tensions have been jacked up for years.

That doesn't make the violence OK. That doesn't mean that Fundamentalists are some put upon and pitiable movement, but understanding the reasons why folks are turning to violence, that would go a ways to at least be able to try to settle things, and maybe not exacerbate their difficulties. There's a lot of years, and a lot that has gone horribly awry, and despite our best efforts, it's not always about the US' interference or policies. Some of this goes back to WWII and the divvying up of the lands to various powers, and the atmosphere of the Cold War, and then again, some of it, like the recockulousness in Ossetia that got some play some time ago, and far from the Middle East, has to do with simmering tensions from before the Bolshevik Revolution. Understanding these tensions, and where they originate, and what has set them off, that is important information.

And yes, this is my shocked face that an intellectual luminary like Sarah Palin would reduce such issues down to a pithy and populist sort of sentiment that shows absolutely no compassion or understanding, but then again, you have to look at her audience. It's not like she's running for office, she's just looking to get some speaking fees and promote a new book down the road if she can get enough attention. She's turning into a heftier version of Anne Coulter, only without the demure and shy demeanor, and sly witicisms...

And on the other paw, Congressional Republicans this week were slamming Obama for not getting involved sooner and heavier.

I have to kind of agree with her; but I suspect we are just sending the rebels enough arms to keep them in the fighting, not to actually enable them to win. Because it serves our geopolitical purposes for this conflict to go on as long as possible, whatever the cost in innocent lives. It threatens the Iranians on their flank, it keeps Hezbollah and Hamas off balance and easily contained, It intimidates the religious kooks consolidating power in Egypt--they won't be attacking Israel anytime soon--it gives a great deal of satisfaction to the long-suffering Lebanese and it doesn't exactly upset the Turks or Jordanians. Both sides are awful and deserve to lose. A clear victory will result in either a renewed secular dictatorship or an equally oppressive religious dictatorship. The conflict is entirely self-inflicted, cannot be blamed on anyone but the Syrians themselves, and doesn't appear to have to potential to expand to any of the neighboring states. We lack the will, the resources and the justification, to intervene and would receive no thanks whatsoever from whichever side we helped win. Sucks to be a kid in Syria but since when have Arabs cared about their kids' well-being when there were propaganda points to be scored? I say, let 'em kill each other. Better them than us.

I think it's kinda sad, in a way.  She blatantly doesn't even know what's going on there and it's so freaking apparent by her statements.

Yeah, I saw a link to this article as a side bar on another link and prayed to the FSM that it would not make it to the PolTab.

And here it is.

It's nice to see one's atheism affirmed like that every once in a while.

"Let Allah sort it out".

Taking the "Kill them all, let God sort it out" meme dropping the first part and then changing God to Allah?

Damn, she's a subtle li'l grifter!

It was a bishop who didn't make the sainthood list. In the Middle Ages many bishops were basically counts, the ruler of small to moderate pieces of real estate with the attached towns and peasants. A fair number of them would put on a suit of armor and swing a sword with the best of them, after all, they were mainly from the nobility, which was pretty much a warrior cast.

In the French epic poem, the Song of Roland, the local bishop is the next to last Frank killed by the Moors, still killing infidels even with four lance heads in his chest.

I hate to say this, but she's probably right at this point. Giving arms to the rebels will likely bite us in the ass a few years down the line, same way giving weapons to the Mujahedin back in the '80s turned out to cause problems.

Maybe if we'd moved early back before the crazies infiltrated the rebels, something good could have come of this.

Her kids are back in reality shows (This time, "Wife Swap," even though neither of them are married). She has to get back in the news to get the rednecks to boost the ratings.
