And there are people in this country who think that such an idiot should be President. Out of over 300,000,000 Americans, this is what some people think is the best leader we could find. It makes me very sad when Americans do not look to the best and brightest to lead us but instead by the most mediocre (at best).

If I'm voting for a representative, governor, or president, I damn well want to be voting for someone more intelligent and enlightened than I am. That really isn't that difficult in my case, but then people like Perry through themselves into the ring and make me sad for humanity.

Let's talk a little history with ol' Rick Perry. When he was elected in 2000, he was a moderate. He had worked on Al Gore's campaigns back in the '80s & then switched parties in the 90s. Over the last 12 1/2 years, he has repeatedly doubled down on his derp. It didn't get REALLY bad until someone whispered in his ear, "You could be President." It's the only thing that can explain his secessionist threats, almost immediately followed by his candidacy to lead the country he just threatened to leave. He panders. He double-downs. He says what he thinks his constituents want to hear. He also acts like a jackass to feed the "yeehaw don't mess with Texas" attitude.

Also, let's factor in that Texas has the worst voter turnout in the country. I'm talkin around 35% of registered voters show up. It's abominable. People just assume that Republicans will take every office & don't bother. I vote in every election, research the candidates, & vote on both sides of the ticket. But that's disheartening when I go back & read the results and 53% of the people in my county voted straight ticket R. And that's relatively low (some counties are more like 80% or 90% straight ticket). It's very discouraging.

2013-06-16 06:04:19 PM
Oh and I'd bet you dollars to donuts he thinks Libya & Lebanon are the same country.

2013-06-16 06:11:23 PM
"Smile when you disagree with a liberal," Perry said. "Shake your head as Ronald Reagan once said, he said you know, liberals know so much that isn't so."

I know Libya and Lebanon are different countries. I could probably even locate them both on a map.

2013-06-16 06:16:25 PM
The fun part is that the Republican DERP Machine is going to now spin it like something happened in Lebanon and it's all Obama's fault., because the republican derp is always correct.

/Maybe Danny Thomas and Jamie Farr used their noses to do perverse things to some embassy workers or something.

Well, what's even better is as subby mentions, it just helps to point out that Reagan had a much, much larger failure at a US outpost in the middle east, and his response was to cut and run from the situation. It's not something Republicans like highlighted at all while they are screaming "BENGHAZI!!!!!" yet Perry confuses the two in his statement for all the world to mock.

The mass amnesia about Reagan also covers Iran-Contra, raising taxes and amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants.

I'm sure there's at least one Fox News full-screen graphic map with Libya labeled as Lebanon.

Just like the one with Iraq labeled as Egypt, and the one with California labeled as North Korea.

Could be worse.

Growing up I commonly confused Lebanese with Lesbian.

Almost started WWIII in Model UN doing that.

I cannot say the same for Perry.  I believe he is quite mentally challenged.

I'm quite impressed.

People in all 52 states and people in the Marine Corpse even think so. Of course they are all using semi-automatic automatic assault rifle magnums when clinging to religion.

Back in 2004, I asked my father sort of the same question about Bush. The conversation started with "Where do you find these people??" Eventually, I asked: "Out of three hundred million people, out of millions of Republicans - governors, senators, Congressmen, business leaders and professionals - THIS is the one that you feel is most qualified, most capable, and most deserving to run this great nation. You can't think of ANYONE who might fit the bill better."

And I swear, just for a second, his eyes flickered.

Democrats don't generally vote for party members they don't feel can do the job. They don't vote Republican, but they might at least stay home out of frustration. Or they might vote, but with tremendous reservations. "I like his take on human rights, but economically we're screwed."

Republicans tend to vote for whoever they have, even if they know that that person could screw up a two-car funeral. Then they have to defend that decision, and they never defend it with, "Yeah, he's a stupenagel, but he's all we got." It's always "Well, I feel he's a combination of Winston Churchill, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., and Gandhi." The smaller the party has gotten, the more tribal it's become, and the more no-true-Scotsman its arguments.

I don't recall the GOP ever caring so much for an ambassador to a muslim country before.  It truly is a new leaf they've turned over. Is there a fund they've set up for the families of the four victims? I'd love to donate.

It would be easier to list all the things that Rick Perry does know, than the things he doesn't. And, oddly enough, it scares the bejeebus out of me that Texans KEEP voting for this clown...

He has an R next to his name which I think automatically makes him Governor.

What happened to the Texas where Ann Richards was in charge?

I only had the pleasure of voting against him in 2006, but I was joined by over 60% of voters:

Perry:  39.03%
Bell:    29.79%
Strayhorn:  18.13%
Friedman:   12.43%

Unfortunately Texas has no runoff for gubernatorial elections, so 39.03% is enough to win.
