Xanadone: EngineerAU: timujin: Um... shouldn't that be penta-sexual? The heterosexuals still count as a group you know.

Don't give them any ideas or they'll use it to connect policy to pentagrams, Satanism, goat sacrifice, and oddly shaped large office buildings housing demons.

Quick!  We need to think up a sixth group so we can start talking about "sexasexuals"!

He was held up as an absolutely unquestionable authority whom nobody had any right to disagree with.

So which is it? Are war veterans not to be questioned or can everything they say be subject to question just the same as everyone else?

Perhaps the former service member who was terminally ill wrote an accurate article based on established facts.

This general is spouting off bigotry and hatred, masked by the American flag and the Bible.

It's not whether someone is conservative, moderate or liberal, it's a logical discussion of facts.  Did we find WMDs in Iraq after we invaded? No. Did the Bush Administration drop the ball on the invasion and the occupation of Iraq? Yes. Was the Iraq War completely unnecessary? IMHO, yes.

And, in the first place, I didn't like the idea of starting a second war while already engaged in a country that actually attacked us in our homeland.

Wait wait wait before a writer's background doesn't make their arguments less valid now it doesn't make their arguments more valid? WTF libs now you're expecting conservatives to actually have facts and not just empty rhetoric and a bunch of crass emotionalism driving their arguments? Why not just be liberals while we're at it?

Basically this is summed up as "When they say something I agree with, they must be right, and when they say something I disagree with, they must be wrong"

You dodged the point beautifully by the way. The question was 'Does a persons status as a war veteran make their opinion more valid?', and the answer in your case is 'When they say something I agree with then absolutely', while mine is 'No, it does not'. We saw this same sort of nonsense with Cindy Sheehan. If you did anything other than nod your head in dumb agreement withe very word she said it was nothing but idiots screaming 'You MONSTER! Her son died! How DARE you question her?'. We saw this same thing with four wives of fallen 9/11 fire fighters. They could say anything about anything and once again if you did anything other than nod in agreement you were some sort of monster.

As I said back when the article from the terminally ill service member first appeared 'If he'd written an opinion piece where he repeated the same talking points conservatives have been using since 2003 would liberals suddenly go 'How could we have been so wrong?''. This article on the horrors of allowing gay service members in to the military is much the same thing. It doesn't matter who wrote it or what sort of awards he received, it's still just a bunch of the same old anti-gay nonsense that was worn out decades ago. Having a distinguished service member pick up a talking point does not make that talking point more valid.

When you're dealing with Bible verses, you have to look at the context a lot of times to get the meaning. Notice that the verse comes after two other verses that are about intermixing? Don't breed across animal species, don't breed across plant species, and don't wear clothing of two different "species." A lot of the laws in Old Testament are laws designed to separate Jews from other cultures of the time; this is what WE do, this is what THEY do. THEY breed animals across species, and wear clothing of two types, and are homosexuals (the strength of the term "abomination" against homosexuality is along the same lines of kosher laws and the laws against mixed threads--in other words, if you're Jewish and eat pork, you shouldn't have a problem with gays). WE are the Chosen of God, and therefore we don't do this.

Many of these laws were also economically related. For example, the kosher prohibition against pork? Swine require an intense amount of water to keep, and Moses crossed a desert. Not exactly prime location to keep pigs. Similar with shellfish, which require either eating fresh (and therefore living near water) or refrigeration (probably would have been magic back then). If I had to make an educated guess, the prohibition against mixing threads is a homespun-type protest, since if I recall correctly Egypt pretty much controlled the economy at the time. To have intermixed threads meant you would have had to purchase something from Egypt, which would have been akin to a black person buying his rims from a KKK Grand Dragon (or whatever the heck they're called).

/studied the Bible extensively at university. It helps when you're an atheist to know more about the Bible than most Christians.

In an article entitled "Desecrating old glory akin to desecrating the constitution," Maj. Gen. Patrick Brady says that he would not encourage anyone to join today's military.
Brady believes that the Obama administration's repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell and the allowance of women to serve in combat has dishonored the military.

A better reason to recommend people don't join the U.S. Military, it's just too rapey these days.

Has anyone clicked on the WND link? Has he addressed this issue? If he did, he blamed the problem on Obama, didn't he?

If you can take the effort to put the Bible into the proper historical context, it is very reliable--as the historical/mythological revision of the victors establishing their sovereign right to the land they took by force of arms and by passive invasion. It also establishes the primacy of the Levite clan of priests over everyone else's otherwise equal claims to the Temple, and a whole host of other political things.

If you try to pretend the Bible was written by god or think it is a verbatim history of the Israelites, then no, it's pure fantasy. But it's the same "reliable" history as the Myth of Manifest Destiny that pretty much all Americans believe, if that was written down. The basic facts are true, but the gloss is pretty thick, and it takes a lot of work to strip off.
