I just flew Virgin America between New York and Los Angeles, and those seats were nice, and I'm a tall guy. Good experience overall with them. Would fly again.

Pretty much all of the American airlines are crap. They need to remove the law forbidding foreign airline from flying between US cities and let some real competition in. Force the crappy airlines we have in the US to adapt or die.

Seriously, there's a lot of flights that are an hour, hour+15 mins and people want full seat recline and bottle service.  Just sit farking still for an hour.  you can do it.

Whatever, at 6'5" it's the difference between being stuffed into a sardine can vs a slightly smaller sardine can. On the rare occasion I have to fly, I just such it up for the 3 or 4 hours it takes to get where I'm going...

One inch of legroom on a 737 translates into a whole new row of fare paying passengers.

And as for carry-on luggage, simply charge $100 for a carry-on bag, and voila!  No more overhead storage problem.

At this point I'd actually be happier with standing-room only flights.  At least my feet get sore instead of having my knees get smashed behind a seat-back.  Or I can have part of my leg stick out into the aisle and the flight crew can maliciously drive a cart into it every 20 minutes.

The one thing missing from that drawing -- the dimension from the floor to the bottom surface of the overhead bins. I've seen photos and drawings of these seats' prototypes a couple times, but so far I haven't seen the upper limit on passenger height these things would impose.

Overhead space aside, if you're too tall, the top of the seat will hit you in the back of the neck, resulting in an instant neck break in case of any accident.

6'5" and I do the same thing. If I cross my legs, they can't recline at all.

What surprises me is that hardly  anyone ever looks behind them to see if it's okay if they recline... while simultaneously, almost everyone complains about the person in front of them reclining without warning.

As it is the top of today's seats end at my shoulders. The only exception used to be the Recaro seats that Midwest Airlines had on a lot of their flights which were adjustable, but those disappeared a few years ago along with the cookies... and the airline itself.

I'd like to see rows of bunks instead of seats. Seems to me that on a 737, you could easily stack them 5 high. I don't need room to sit up, I don't need a crappy meal, I don't need a soda, I don't need 4 pretzels... just let me sleep for a couple of hours and wake me up when we're at the gate.

The pricing is competitive, but the scheduling can be a bit of a challenge.  I'm a big guy and I pay the price for the larger seats with lots of legroom, but if you're buying tickets without advance, as I often do, it's a better deal (and far better seat) than on other DFW carriers.

I have the utter luxury of not having had to fly commercial since mid-2001, but I'm 6'2" and economy class was murder.  The rule was always to check behind you and nod, and if they didn't give you stink eye, you reclined a LITTLE.  Unless it was a child or a midget, in which case, drop anchor.

Oh, shut your whining. We earn more and are considered more attractive. We get promoted quicker, are considered more trustworthy and have better leadership qualities, and are more electable in politics. And all of this is inherent, regardless of actual talent, and without having to lift a finger. Airline seats are a tiny annoyance in comparison to our unearned privilege.

Oops. That *is* confusing isn't it? I blame my allergies. Here's my attempt to explain: My impression is that many Farker's find flying on JB to be a world of suck. My actual flying with them had been fine. And the gate experience had also been pretty good. My complaint was this: Once we needed to fly somewhere and we already had JB tix, so I tried to just change the date. The cost of that ended up being more than just buying new tickets would have been. But this wasn't made clear when I was talking to the agent. A change fee, yeah fine, but not doubling my ticket cost. I complained when I got my CC bill and they gave me a few bucks credit but it was a pittance. The fact that the need to change the ticketing was due to the death of my father in law (which I explained at the time of the change -- we even had to dig up his obit from the funeral home) didn't help matters. Its been a couple of years now, so maybe its time to get over it and just be much more careful.

I used to be in that crowd. Last flight I was on a tall person sitting behind me stopped me from reclining. I politely called the flight attendant and said my seat was broken, couldn't recline and I was concerned about its safety features if the recline function was broken. Free upgrade to first class. Win win. You don't have someone infront trying to recline I get to sit in first class. Thank you tall people!

Thanks for the explanation. You're more reasonable than I am. You got ripped off by a corporation that doesn't care a thing about you, they only care about separating you from your money. If in future you decide to enter into a transaction with them, you'll have eyes wide open. And you'll probably be fine. But those rat-bastards will still make a profit off of you. They always do.

That is why I always remind my niece and nephews that when they see a cute gecko selling auto insurance, or a talking baby trying to get them to use a particular stock-investment house, that the sole purpose of their business is to take your money.

I was stationed in Hawaii, during the Iranian hostage crisis. I was watching Ronald Reagan give his inaugural speech when the news flash came on, saying that the hostages had been released. Less than two minutes later, they cut to a commercial, and there was a young fresh-faced McDonalds worker opening up the store. He goes outside and raises the American flag, and then steps back and salutes it. Then the voice-over intones "McDonalds salutes the release of the American hostages".

Now how long do you think they had that film in the can? They had 444 days to visualize how best to leverage American patriotic feeling into selling more hamburgers. My first thought was "How cynical!" I was thoroughly disgusted, and decided I'd never eat there again. And I haven't.

I've never flown JetBlue; most of my flying hours have been logged as a crew chief on a Chinook helicopter where I was the stewardess, and a most ungracious one at that. We didn't have vomit-bags (use your helmet), pillows (use your buddy), or leg-room ("GET YOUR GODDAMNED FEET OFF THE LIFE-RAFTS!").

I would fly commercial however, when it was convenient to do so. That ended in 2004, when I flew with my mother to California to pick up her car, and the TSA agents were not only rude and surly, but spilled coffee all over our possessions and basically dared us to do anything about it. My mother talked me out of walking out of the airport and going home, but I vowed that I'd never fly commercially again, and I've stuck to it. I don't consider it a boycott, but it amounts to the same thing. YMMV.

I'm normally no corporate apologist, but I have to agree here. Compare air travel now to 30 years ago. Why is anyone surprised at the deterioration in quality as prices have plummeted?

Don't get me wrong--I don't feel bad for the companies either. But consumers are just as complicit in this race to the bottom. Evidently we'll always take lower prices, regardless of the conditions, so long as they get our ass to our destination in one piece at 500 MPH.

Perhaps if they'd just tell you the price of a ticket upfront, and stick to it, people wouldn't have to shop for a bargain. You may obtain a seat for less than an airline's cost, but if they aren't making some money off it, it would not be available. Airlines are not a public service, they're there to take your money. Now and forever.

You have a good point, but my whine is not so much about extra fees as the fact that I might buy a ticket at full-price, and sit next to someone who bought a ticket the day of the flight, and paid a pittance, so that the airline could fill the last empty seats. Or vice-versa. But it doesn't affect me, because I refuse to play the airline's game. They have lost my business.

A no-bullshiat airline with simplified pricing and comfortable seats would never survive because everyone would keep flocking towards $289 cross-country round-trip, and then biatch about how they were charged for bags and didn't get any peanuts.

You have a good point, but my whine is not so much about extra fees as the fact that I might buy a ticket at full-price, and sit next to someone who bought a ticket the day of the flight, and paid a pittance, so that the airline could fill the last empty seats. Or vice-versa. But it doesn't affect me, because I refuse to play the airline's game. They have lost my business.


Well that's just price discrimination and it's good economics.  You're more than welcome to take advantage of it if you're willing to risk not getting a flight because you waited.  In fact, you've probably taken advantage of price discrimination in other ways if you've taken a weekday flight or an afternoon flight or an overnight flight.  Just because that one particular instance affects you negatively doesn't mean you can ignore all the times it's helped you.

Alas, they still have a ways to go.  A few months ago I was planning a trip from San Jose to San Antonio and considered using Amtrak, only to discover that the relevant Amtrak trains always arrive and depart from San Antonio in the middle of the night (2:45am toward Los Angeles, 4:50am toward Chicago).

I've heard that riding Amtrak is a much more pleasant experience than flying, which could make it worth the higher cost, but arriving and departing in an unfamiliar city in the middle of the night was a deal-breaker.

Yankees Team Gynecologist:  I'm normally no corporate apologist, but I have to agree here. Compare air travel now to 30 years ago. Why is anyone surprised at the deterioration in quality as prices have plummeted?

30 years ago I flew Piedmont (actually more like 33 years, it was my first flight). Round trip from Newark, NJ to West Palm Beach, Fl and back again. There was a meal served (think I had the chicken), and you could check 2 bags free (plus a carry-on). Ticket price was $99 plus tax.

/we almost missed the return flight

///i was lugging a 20 pound sack of grapefruit... and i don't like grapefruit

So, almost 300 in today's dollars per CPI...probably a lot more factoring in jet fuel, for an intracoastal flight using secondary airports. not bad, but far from budget by today's flying standards.

I've had a couple of people turn around and make some remark when I try that.  The worst ones are those who are tall themselves.  They usually make some comment about how they have enough room in their seat, so why do I have to be such a prick?

Newsflash - some people get their height from their midsection, some people get their height from their legs.  For those in the latter column, flying really sucks.

I think some slave ships actually did just that.  However, the more tightly you pack newly-captured slaves, the more likely they are to die from disease et al. before you can sell them, so there was a certain threshold where more slaves did not equal more profit.

I have an injured right leg. Somebody crunching into it (and the 20 odd screws / 3 plates in it) causes me to curse loudly in pain. I guess I'll never be able to fly coach on American. Granted, I usually fly business class on flights over 2 hours, but fark off with this idea.

6'5" and I do the same thing. If I cross my legs, they can't recline at all.

What surprises me is that hardly  anyone ever looks behind them to see if it's okay if they recline... while simultaneously, almost everyone complains about the person in front of them reclining without warning.

Seriously, guys, as if they could move the seat with our knees pressing against the seatback. I'm surprised I didn't give a concussion to the last guy who tried to recline on me.

Oh, and only about 3% of Americans are 6'1" and taller. We are an unprotected class, unlike gays or blacks or women. We are actively discriminated against.


Try being over 6'1" and lefthanded. Its like being a gay black women every time you try to open a right handed door.

Good Point!  I am tired of having to explain the Wright Ammendment to my colleagues over the last 20 years.  I recenty moved from Benbrook to N. Richland Hills just to be closer to DFW...Where I live now, Love Field is actually becoming a reasonable alternative again.

Well at least the how-dare-you-keep-me-from-reclining-you-should-have-bought-a-first-cla ss-seat crowd hasn't showed up in this thread to harangue us yet, like they always do, so there's that.


Okay, here you go: You knew what the fark you were buying. Airlines these days often offer extra legroom seats for $30 or so more in the first row or the exit row, which are more than affordable if you're already paying a few hundred bucks to fly. Either put your money where your mouth is, or STFU and admit that this is what you get when you always buy the rock bottom fare. The seats were designed to recline, and are somewhat more comfortable when reclined. As such, a lot of people choose to recline them. It's a normal and expected part of flying cattle class, and you knew that when you bought that ticket and didn't buy the exit row upgrade. You made the tradeoff, you have no one to blame but yourself.
