Didn't this story already make the rounds when the Avs got the no. 1 pick? You're late to the party SI but it's still a great story. Hope Seth Jones does well for the Avs.

thisiszombocom: Until the lanche trade the top puck to buffalo

As much as Buffalo is talking about trading up, that's just not going to happen.

The price would be far higher than Regier would be willing to pay.  I'm talking Vanek+Grigorenko+8th overall+additional picks and prospects.  And even then it's doubtful Colorado would be willing to trade down all the way to 8th.  Teams with the 1st overall pick, when they do trade down, typically only trade down a spot or two so that they still wind up drafting an elite player.

Personally, I'd be shocked if Buffalo manages to trade up and pick higher than 5th.  And if I had to bet, I'd wager that they're going to wind up picking 8th, right where they are now.

As for the topic of this thread, it's no guarantee that Jones goes first.  It could be Nathan MacKinnon.

I'm guessing Roy doesn't appreciate being pigeonholed by the media to automatically pick this kid. It sure sounds like he's leaving his options open.

I'm not convinced it's a done deal, yet.

The Avs might take MacKinnon. Sure that would be a lot (i.e. too much) talent down the middle, but Jones can't be expected to suddenly and single-handedly make this horrible defense better. MacKinnon, however, might
1) produce more immediately for the offense,
and/or
2) allow for better trade-bait (of Stastny or O'Reilly if the the trade deadline is after Feb 28th) to land a proven D-man, who can be impactful sooner than later.

Because who knows, if Jones needs 2-5 years to develop to really start putting up #1 D-man minutes, how much of our offense is still under contract (we have a LOT of contracts to resign at the end of this next season. Like A LOT... Nearly everyone: Duchene, Johnson, Varly, Stastny, O'Reilly, Landy, Downie, McGinn, Barrie AND Elliott, and most importantly Zanon and his magical ability to fill up roster spots that would be better suited for a cardboard cutout of Kate Upton)? We sacrifice developing the D at the cost of losing our offensive potential and are back at square one.

I wish Florida had some more appealing defense with which to trade down one spot (because I think they would choose MacKinnon in a heartbeat), but I just don't see it.

Either way, I'm happy the option is in our hands, and barring a crazy trade to some team out of the top-5, I'm confident I'll be happy with the outcome no matter who we get.

/Also,  thiszombocom, no one calls them the "lanche." It's dumb. It's like calling them the Aves.

My bet: Colorado trades down to #2 and gets an additional pick or prospect from Florida.

Florida then takes McKinnon first overall and Colorado takes Jones second.

It comes from the NHL tradition of selling as many pucks with event logos stamped on them as they can, I would imagine.

\Us Canes fans gotta represent.
\\Should get someone pretty good at #5, but damn if Jones wouldn't have been perfect.

As a basketball fan, my biggest memory of Popeye was how ugly he was. His kid dodged a bullet in the looks department, I guess Mrs. Jones is a dime to balance out the ugly.

I'm ashamed to say that was my first thought too. In fact, the best way to tell if you're dealing with a real basketball fan or a casual fan/pretender is to see who their go-to ugly 90's NBAer is. If they say Sam Cassell, they're not fully committed to the NBA. It they go Popeye, you can have the secret "real fan" conversations.

You apparently weren't watching the same game I was watching. Every goal MacKinnon scored came from Drouin. Take that away from him and the story would have been quite a bit different.

Jones can only stop ONE person at a time, not Drouin AND MacKinnon. Doesn't work that way.

Either or, I hope Colorado doesn't trade the pick and drafts any of those 3. Take MacKinnon, trade Stastny for a proven D-Man. Take Drouin and he'll be feeding Duchene goal fodder for the next decade. Take Jones and have your #1D for the next 20 years. Hard not to lose.

That's why I said tournament. MacKinnon. He was easily better than Jones throughout that entire tourney.

Drafting Jones is by far the smartest move so therefore the Kronkemarts will find a way to completely fark it up.

Hard to compare a forward versus a defenseman though.

NHL-ready forwards are rarer than NHL-ready forwards at the draft, and that fact alone increases their value. Plus Colorado's needs at defense are so much more pressing, which may tilt them towards Jones.

Normally for the NHL Draft, I say you should always take BPA. The one exception is if you are in the top three, where you have a choice of elite prospect who are all ready to step into the NHL right away, in which case I think it's OK to draft based on need. And Colorado's biggest need is defense.

what time is it?! Game 2 time, uh!

re: this thread, the avs are probably trying to get a deal to trade down so they can take jones and still feel good about it (or not not take jones first and then deal with fan/media wrath)

having watched dale talon in the past, I'd say he's dumb enough to take a deal. they have so many holes he should sit tight and take whoever drops to 2, or worst case something with conditions around return picks depending on whose pick reaches 100 nhl games first or something.

HA, I totally get what you mean. Hell, some other test of the "real fan" happened to me the other day when talking about LeBron and the Spurs. I was asked who else was on that Cavs team (first I was asked what happened in 07), and the fact that I actually knew 4 other names proved it. Saying Z first was all he wanted to hear.
