The Washington Clusterfark is noticably absent

2013-06-14 09:03:42 PM
All of them are terrible.

Let's just over-commit and call this team The Washington Griffins.

2013-06-14 09:04:54 PM
"skins?" wouldn't that be about as good as calling them the "n*gs?"

Since neither Snyder nor the NFL seem interested in renaming the team...

2013-06-14 09:06:39 PM
If they rename them, go with something that truly represents DC. How about...

Washington Imperials...truly honor the great Imperial city of the USofA.
or
Washington Vactioneers...after our hardworking Congress.
or
Washington Snoopers...after our 'just looking out for your safety by spying on everything you do' heroes
or
Washington Oligarchs...which would be the most honest name ever.

Meh. Guessing I'm not winning the renaming contest.

Scalpers would be an appropriate name for most major league sports teams.

The Rocs? WTF is a Roc? Plus that looks like a raven. Leave that up the road in Baltimore.
The Metros? We hate our Metro system. Don't remind us of it. Today a train hit a metal staircase that somehow ended up on the track and screwed up the evening rush hour.
The Leopards? WTF does DC have to do with leopards?
The Skins? Well I guess that is the best of the four, but Daniel Snyder said the name will never be changed, so f*ck you and the politically correct horse you rode in on.

Gecko Gingrich: Since neither Snyder nor the NFL seem interested in renaming the team...

Which is good IMO.  Is the current name a little bit racist, maybe, but it's been around for a long time, and it was acceptable when it was created, it should be grandfathered in.  History should trump political correctness on this.

The easiest solution is a nickname that still allows them to use the popular diminutive.

Just go with "Foreskins"

It rolls off the tongue if you say it enough. Not sure of the logo. Maybe a recently cut-down tree floating down the Potomac.

Lord Jubjub: Of those four, I'd go with the Skins.

There was a (now defunct) professional football team in Washington back in the early days of pro-football that was known as the Senators, Presidents, and Pros at various points.

If they do have to change it, they could at least go with one of those to keep some history alive.

Prior to WWII Linde's gas cylinders were  stamped with a swastika What they did was add 4 lines to make 4 squares. Most hydrotesters stamped in the extra lines over the years but a few bottles still have swasikas,

Before the 1930s, the 45th infantry division's symbol was a red square with a yellow a tribute to the large Native American population in the southwestern United States.

Yeah.  I understand that occasionally people do dumb things in the name of trying not to offend someone, but when the team name is a racial epithet, it's kind of farking offensive not only to that group but to all of us because we can't muster up the will and intelligence to change it.

I can't agree with this. There are lots of things that use to be acceptable but no longer are. In most situations you can't grab the ass of a hot co-worker but that use to be perfectly fine and even expected. However, I don't think the name is a big deal. Over 90% of Native Americans don't care that sports teams use them as mascots. If they don't care, I don't see why the rest of the country should either. This isn't a 60-40 tyranny of the majority situation, it's over 90% are fine with it. Getting that high percentage agreement on anything is pretty difficult. The only good reason I can see to change the name is that it's a distraction. But if the team and the fans can deal with it, why bother?

Keep the Redskins name "officially" but gradually shift to referring to the team as the skins like the A's and Knicks

This will be exhibit one in my essay:  Marketing execs don't know they're ass from a hole in the ground.  Every quote is as self-congratulatory as it is totally and completely unaware.  This could only have come from the minds of people that make over $500k/yr.  There's no justice in the world sometimes.

The Roc is a carbon copy of a Raven.  Ask any Redskins fan, especially those of us in Maryland, how enjoyable that would be.

Metros is generic.  Not terrible, but utterly forgettable.  Might work for MLS, or baseball (though Nationals is better)......."Fashioned to work with the idea of a D.C. Metro token."   You know how I know you've done zero homework?

Leopards is just terrible.  Hideously generic.  4 cats aren't enough, let's get a 5th.  The internet tells me cats are all the rage!  The logo is horrible.  Skiles: "A fierce, iconic rendering of the mascot."   If you were trying for a slightly fiercer version of Snaggletooth, sure.

Skins:  This name in and of itself means nothing.  Why change it if you're going to change it to this?  I'll admit the logo is pretty nice.  "Possible high acceptance among die-hard fans. " No name change will go over well with die-hard fans.  Pretending it will means you either don't know shiat, or you cut huuuge taco farts and just keep grinning because of course no one will notice.

There is one lesson to be learned from this article:  anyone that hires Lexicon branding enjoys lighting large piles of cash on fire.  I'm noticing they don't mention which logos for sports teams they've created.  Surely just a careless omission.

Or they could just go with the "Washington Warriors" being that Snyder already trademarked the name a decade ago (Step One).

My guess is that fark Face is going to sit on that name for a few more years and pray that RG3 can pull a few good seasons out of his ass (Step Two).

Once he gets enough folks on the bandwagon and expands his market for team apparel, FF will magnanimously rebrand the team. Because its the right thing to do and the Redskins have a long history of racial tolerance (Step 3).

And then all of the band-wagoners will fall all over themselves to buy the new team apparel (Profit).

Dan "fark Face" Snyder. That smarmy farkwit not only figured out step 3 a decade ago, he did so in a way that will make him look like the good guy.

So what're you going to do about it?  As has been noted a number of times here, Dan Snyder won't make the change, at least not on his choice.  And while many politicians are more than happy to make a lot of noise about it, let's see if any actually get into acting on it.  In DC, that might be a political death wish (and no, I doubt a Republican would be winning in many areas that had an influence on this, but there are always primaries and independents).

So at this point, it might be in your best interest to find some other cause to get behind, maybe something that actually stands a chance of succeeding

I have always hated the Redskins as a team, not as a name. I am very tempted to buy one of their jerseys before they change the name because I hate all of this "politically correct" bullshiat even more. Would love to have some asshole come up and comment on it.

So you are saying, "Let's not try because it might be hard?"

Pussy.

2013-06-14 11:51:30 PM
All that being said, most of those names suck.  The Skins might be the most acceptable to a Redskins fan, but the least to those who oppose the current name, as it still alludes to it.  The Rocs is actually a pretty awesome name, picking out a fictional bird like that, but let's first save that name for an expansion team (or maybe if the Jaguars move to LA), and not use a logo that looks so much like the Raven.  But Metros or Leopards?  What, there aren't enough big cats in the NFL?  And people who live around DC need a reminder of their terrible subway, an allusion that we live in this area, or a logo where the "g" is left out of Washington?
