blackflag415: I live in Japan.  Nothing here is futuristic or efficient.

They're too busy being socially inept and not making babies to be bothered with efficiency.

Japan?  Efficient?

I suspect it's because all their smart kids moved to America, where they get to take advantage of pre-placed "Asians are just smarter" memes and "affirmative action" laws, instead of being chained to "people who are older than you are better than you, period" social mores.

So you get a whole lot of old farts whose kids up and fled, and so they biatch loud and long to the government about how they exist and need to be taken care of.

eajc4f: I'm just popping in to say that as someone who lived there for several years, I feel the Japanese have little concept of efficiency. "Standardized", yes.  "Meticulous", sure!

"Efficient" ...  no way, Jose!   :-P

My understanding is that of the 100 hours a week a salaryman puts in, 80 of them are spent smoking.

DeltaPunch: Clemkadidlefark: Mainland Japan is - I'm convinced - an experiment of some kind.

Mainland?

As opposed to the Other Land. You know what I mean.

Gee, you make it next to impossible for young people to start families and raise kids, and your birthrate drops into the toilet? Unpossible!

I wonder how Karl Pilkington feels about this?

DubtodaIll: From the short time I spent in Japan, I think the elderly would rather be taken care of by robots than young people anyway.

Yeah, but it's only a matter of time before someone mods the robots with a Vocaloid theme and tanks the birth rate even harder.
