Never understood the problem with "bandwagon" fans.

I used to live in Chicago.  I don't watch much hockey, I don't know that much about the sport.  But hell yeah, I'm going to watch every Finals game and cheer for the Blackhawks.

As a long suffering Arizona Cardinals fan, I can't stand them (not that we have much to cheer about these days, but I meant the SB run a few years back).  I can't stand them, that is, until I become one!  when the 'Yotes went to the semis last year, I was Captain Coyote.  this year?  Ehhhhh.

and i don't know if it is confirmation bias or whatever, but, it seems like after every super bowl, you see more of [insert winning team's logo] stuff around phoenix.  is it the transient population, people that just hate the cardinals, or legit, but after the GB win, the block G was everywhere.  afte rthe STeelers win, every other farkstick had the steel logo on their window.  even now, you see Giants / and fleur-de-lis everywhere.

(baltimore has had so such resurgence though).

Because Miami is a city full of models, coke-heads, celebrity transplants, and asshats-in-general.

The way I understand it is you didn't earn the right to cheer for them. Choosing to soak in the highs, yet abandon them during the lows. It is a display of low character. An honourable person would stick with a local team as they would a friend or family member.

The biggest example is Lebron James. Raised in Ohio, yet a Yankees, and Cowboys fan in his youth. If he were into hockey he would have loved the Canadiens or Red Wings.

A packed outdoor deck behind a popular Miami-area sports bar partially collapsed during the NBA Finals on Thursday night, sending dozens of patrons into the shallow waters of Biscayne Bay.

i have a picture in my bucket i took of a car here in phoenix with the following:

Phoenix license plate
HUUUGE Lakers sticker on rear window
Yankees sticker
49ers sticker

so this farkstick has committed sports adultrey not once but thrice.  and like i always say, "yeah, because NYC and LA have such a love affair, as does SoCal with NorCal"

Dumbass victims. Clearly they were asking for it.

Seriously, though... two people were seriously injured. Why the "dumbass" tag? I didn't read the whole story, but a deck collapsed and hurt a bunch of people. Even if it was overcapacity, isn't that the responsibility of the bar management to control that?

Whatever you think of Miami Heat fans, I don't really find any humor in this. It's kind of like wishing cancer on somebody because they are driving 10mph below the speed limit in front of you.

You obviously know Phoenix more than me... but its a pretty big retirement city, no?  I assume that's where that comes from.

We don't have a baseball team down here in NOLA, so all sports fans either bring their allegiances along from where they moved, or pick a random team*

*By random its The Red Sox 90% of the time

This is the reason that Red Sox fans annoy me way more than Yankees fans - it's a fanbase full of people who wanted to be bandwagoners but knew that picking the Yankees would make them seem like bandwagoners, so they pick the team that hates the Yankees but is pretty much the same thing.

At least own being a bandwagoner.

Yes, I like teams more when they win. I like watching teams that play their sport excellently. I watch sports to see feats of excellence, not because I give a sh*t about the jersey someone's wearing. No team in any of the big four sports plays for any town I've lived in (and I've lived in more than a dozen). And pretty much everyone playing for any of those teams? Didn't come from there. So why the f*ck would I pretend to care about what is, for all intents and purposes, the clothes they wear?

Oh, and people act as though I'm a Miami Heat fan - no, I'm a LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Udonis Haslem, Chris Andersen, Mike Miller, etc. fan.

downstairs: You obviously know Phoenix more than me... but its a pretty big retirement city, no? I assume that's where that comes from.

yeah, probably the bulk of it.  but there are locals that just shift allegiances.  one of my former bosses owned several NFL jerseys.  whomever got hot, that became his team.

i rmember once right before the season started we had an office lunch and he said something about "i'm really thinking of going to the Packers this year!" and the rest of us are like, dude what the fark?

id' say this is the breakdown for phoenix fans:

1.  30% cards
2.  25% dallas
3.  25% Donkos
4.  10% Patriots (fading)
5.  Other:  Steelers, SFO, Raidres, Bolt-Ons, etc.  Bears are pretty big too but that's mainly due to the Chicago transplants.  aneighbor has both "Waveland Ave" and "Soldier Field" signs in his backyard and another, a Blackhawks license plate.  ltos of Chicago transplants here.

2013-06-14 04:44:53 PM
Oh, and, many people got hurt last night.  If a deck were to collapse in Wrigleyville everyone would be all "God bless those people, our hearts are with you".

As well, I didn't pick a team because they were good at the time.  I lived in Chicago.  I just admit that regular season hockey bores the hell out of me, but its fun to cheer for the 'Hawks when they're in the playoffs.

There's nothing wrong with them in general. They pay attention when the team does well and ignore it when the team stinks. In my area, this pretty much describes all Carolina Hurricane fans.

But when they start talking nonsense to other team's fans, pretend they know something about the sport when they barely know the names of the team's players, never shut up about "their" team, or narrate the play by play of the team's games in Fark threads, they become annoying douchebags.

You want to cheer for the Hawks in the Finals, no problem I don't blame you. If you start showing up in hockey threads to talk shiat to real fans or start doing play by play in every thread, or start posting a Blackhawks logo in every thread you're in, you'll be an annoying bandwagon fan. And no one likes them.

I consider 'bandwagon' as a set of fans who are only watching the team because they're getting talked about and it's 'the place to be' (i.e. pink hats at Red Sox games), while another set like their team but won't watch unless they're good. And the latter is the way it should be: It's incumbent on those running the franchise to field a product worth consuming. Unfortunately the latter is also grouped in with the pink-hat types.

After what happened in the 2010 Finals I don't wanna hear anyone say anything about officiating. It was terrible. But I won't say that it lost Miami the finals. Miami lost in 2010 because the Mavs had one of the best shooting performances I've ever seen.
