And now we start the World Cup calendar. The Confederations Cup is my fourth favorite thing about the World Cup and the run up to it.

4. The Confederations Cup
3. World  cup qualifying
2. The actual World Cup itself
1. The World Cup draw and saying "group of death" over and over

Confederations Cup?

RACISTS!

Ah yes, the Oceanian rogues' gallery. The nations Australia ran to Asia to get away from because they weren't getting decent games anymore. Now it's basically New Zealand's region to beat up on a bunch of rugby countries and tiny little specks of land that worry more about global warming than soccer. Just so happens that New Zealand got upended this time around.

Watch. They'll beat Spain 1-0. Spain will put a shot on goal so hard, it'll ricochet into Spain's goal.

I'm rooting for them. For them and against Mexico. I would also like to see the super eagles get a shot at the cup but I suspect the winner of that group will come down to a "Who can put up the most goals on tahiti" competition.

Nah the US will qualify for the WC - we beat Mexico 0-0 in hostile territory after all. But no Confederations this time:(

3 years ago I was running a 10K on July 4th.  It was hotter than hell.  There was a water stop at mile 4 and a kid nearby with one of those damned vuvuzelas.  I picked up a cup of water and threw it at him, scooped another one for me and rode the cheers of my fellow racers for the last 2.2 miles.

That whole situation still pisses me off, but CONCACAF picks the game sites, not US Soccer. Still, that was one of the more embarrasing moments in US Soccer history.

I see it's been covered, but yeah, that was a CONCACAF tourney, so they picked all the sites. World Cup qualifier sites all over the world are chosen by the home team. In CONCACAF, the home team also sells TV rights in the away country, which is why the only US away game not on a channel no one gets (beIn Tv) is the one at Mexico.

Tahiti FTW for no other reason that I have been there.  The people on the outer islands like Moorea are very friendly and it's quite the place to just take it easy and relax.

If I had butt-tons of money I would retire there (if global warming doesn't bury it in the ocean first).

CenturyLink is bit bigger. I kinda think all National Team games in the PNW will be in Seattle. Can Portland's stadium handle Timbers Army folks and American Outlaws?

/Hopefully I can farking go next time. Having that game on finals week sucked.

Too small of a stadium, I would say.  Why sell 19k tickets when you can sell 40k+ just a couple hours north in what has already proven itself as simply the best place in the country to host a USMNT game.

In case you didn't see the tifo before the game at CLink...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yevLwT2tag

Also, Eddie Johnson let slip that multiple national team players want to play for the Sounders following their trip there.  They were also on hand for the Sounders win vs. Vancouver that weekend, flying directly in from Jamaica and going to the game.

Sorry Portland, you'll have to continue being the red headed step child of soccer in the Northwest until you can build and pack a legit stadium.

And Columbus. Don't forget how well we've done there.

FWIW I like spreading the games out all over the country. It gives every true US supporter and opportunity to see a match every so often. The issue with Seattle and Portland is the distance. They're so far from Europe and the Caribbean it's hard to see us always playing there. I was at the match on Tuesday and it was incredible. We should play here all the time, but when it works.

Also, F*ck Los Angeles.

In the name of Cascadian and USMNT Unity, lets all pretend to like the Portland fans for a while longer. I'm thinking until the next Cascadia Cup match at the most. Come on, it's great for your karma and builds character.

This; damn that Seattle crowd was awesome.  One thing however:  can the USSF and the officials at CenturyLink Field pool their resources to place the Fieldturf with natural grass or what Miami has (Prescription Athletic Turf).

One goal?  How about one shot on goal.  That sounds a bit more realistic.

Also, I agree with all who say that MNT games should only be played in Seattle and Columbus.  Anywhere else and we lose home field advantage.

We've got to learn the art of home-field advantage better than we practice it. We can't be scheduling games in cities filled with the opposing ethnicity or Estadio Rose Bowl is going to happen every time. You're playing Mexico? Don't play them in LA. Play them in Iowa. Rent out Iowa State's place and hold the game there. You're playing Jamaica? Don't hold the game in Miami. Hold the game in Buffalo and freeze their asses off. CONCACAF is filled with tropical nations, so make Commerce City happen as often as humanly possible.

Spain v Uruguay, Brazil v Italy and a bunch of meh until the semi-finals

I was happier when the Russian league was running through the summer. I'm not watching the Baltic and Scandinavian leagues and I sure as hell am not watching beach football.

But hey, CL and EL preliminary round draw is in a few weeks...
