Don't be farktarded in a dim attempt to not profile.

There's enough nefarious shiat in the world without trying to make every single thing someone does look skulky.  Most normal college students do stupid things like this at least once, without any evil intent beyond the mild thrill of being somewhere they shouldn't.  My friends and I snuck into the old steam tunnels under the university on more than one occasion, just to see what was down there.  We were very lucky not to get caught.

/We did poison all of the steam, but those motherfarkers had it coming.

Hey, I've done some trespassing too. And I don't give a toss about religion here, I'm more concerned with their majors and their chosen time to go sightseeing. I used to live right behind a Military base, and the fence had a few holes...  and yeah I snuck in there a few times. (It was a research facility too!)

I'd fully expect to get the damn 3rd degree and be investigated for it.

no... I just find it funny that others think 7 Pakistani chemical engineers trespassing at a farking Massachusetts reservoir in the middle of the night isn't suspicious in light of recent events in Boston. As another poster said, if they had some beers on them it would have been chalked up as students having a good time.

Lsherm: A reservoir isn't the kind of place anyone goes to visit in the middle of the night

Um. Unless they were up to no good. Like swimming in the reservoir or drinking or having sex or smoking weed or...

any of the other things that college students have been doing at the Quabbin reservoir for the last hundred years...

I live quite near to this reservoir, although the water goes right past my town to supply metro Boston.  It's a gorgeous scenic area that has plenty of traffic during the day, but is locked down tighter than a nun's potato at night.

Those kids knew they shouldn't have been there.  I don't believe there was anything nefarious going on -- we all did stupid things before the interwebs made it easy to freak everyone out.

Vodka Zombie: Lsherm: Vodka Zombie: Lsherm: Vodka Zombie: Lsherm: They weren't arrested, but it IS odd to visit a reservoir in the middle of the night, even if your academic interests happen to line up with it. Personally, I'd feel better about the whole thing if at least one of them was hammered wasn't a Muslim.

FTFY.

They could all be Muslim, they could all be Jewish, they could all be Druids, but visiting a reservoir in the middle of the night makes a lot more sense if someone is hammered or white..

FTFY again.

No you farking tard - it wouldn't make any sense if six white kids were at the reservoir at 12:30 am, either - UNLESS THEY WERE HAMMERED.

A reservoir isn't the kind of place anyone goes to visit in the middle of the night.  It's like saying "let's go to the used car lot" at 12:30 in the morning.

I just explained that I, at times, do in fact visit the reservoir in the middle of the night...  not hammered... And, you don't seem to have a problem with it.  So...  what was your point again?

Strangely enough, I've also been dragged to a used car lot in the middle of the night as well (I know.  Weird life, huh?).  But, that's a story for another day.

by yourself walking your dog and, if confronted, I'd imagine you don't claim that visiting a reservoir in the middle of the night was relevant to your career interests. They are not guilty of anything but trespassing but let's not pretend it is just like you walking your dog by the water at night.

AndreMA: Anyone want to do the math on how many tons of chemicals it would take to effectively poison 412 billion gallons? Wouldn't it be far more effective to connect to a fire hydrant and force your poison upstream? I don't think hydrants have back-flow prevention... at least I've heard stories of some idiot causing an explosion in a nearby building by forcing propane into the system via a hydrant?

We did that already on the JREF forum when this first occurred. It depends on what poison you use, but it would still have to be at least several truck loads to make much of a difference. The standard processes at the water treatment plant would remove or neutralize most things that could make people sick. Anything strong enough to get past that would be noticed before it could get to the distribution system because all the fish and wildlife in the reservoir would be dead. Plant workers are trained to look for stuff like that. Interesting that you mentioned injection at fire hydrants because I made the same suggestion. You would need a good sized pump to overcome the system pressure in order to inject there. However, even that would only have a localized effect. You would poison a few blocks at most. Residual chlorine in the system can oxidize most complex molecules pretty quickly. Once people started getting sick, the distribution system would be isolated and flushed out. Again, it's a standard response that workers are trained for.

Lsherm: Marcus Aurelius: They may well have been taking pictures of the reservoir.  Isn't that grounds for a terrorism charge?  What's this country coming to when we can't arbitrarily throw suspicious people into a lockup somewhere and throw away the key?

At 12:30 am they'd need a hell of a flash.   They weren't arrested, but it IS odd to visit a reservoir in the middle of the night, even if your academic interests happen to line up with it. Personally, I'd feel better about the whole thing if at least one of them was hammered.  It would explain the logic.

My own favorite pass-time is astronomy - I just wish there were more public places that were accessible in the middle of the night. Darkness is kind of important for astronomers - the darker the sky, the better.

And you had a dog with you.  So if I asked you why you were at the reservoir, and you said "walking my dog" - then that sounds plausible.  "Doing freelance homework" does not sound plausible.  "Drinking, having sex, and farking around" sounds plausible.

Why not?  I used to write college papers in the bar after close, so....  Do college kids keep strict hours of study these days?

Look, it's not your fault.  You've been conditioned to be afraid of every damn thing that might appear even remotely out of place.  The fact that two brown people hanging out at a reservoir incites such terror in you is simply the product of your own paranoia.  It's irrational, but it's what this country has been reduced to.  We're afraid of shoes, bottles of shampoo, underwear, and brown people with unusual names.

It doesn't matter what hour of the day these two were at the reservoir.  The fact that Muslims are checking out a piece of good old American infrastructure is enough to send America's heroic bed-wetting brigade into full blown panic attacks.  The fact that you're prejudiced enough to assume that these two are up to something nefarious without even remotely having a fact one way or the other says quite a great deal about you and the type of person you are.

And, that's okay.  Like I said, you've been conditioned to be afraid of everything and see terrorism around every corner.  If you don't understand something, fear it.  It'll keep you safe, I guess.

I'm not terrified, I said it would make more sense if they had been drinking.  Or hell, even if they were walking a dog.  The story smells like bullshiat to me.  That doesn't mean they were there plotting some nefarious plot - for all I know they could have been looking for a private location for an orgy.

Not to argue, but logic indicates your statement is based on "What we know". The stuff that gets us in a ditch slapping at the flames on our persons while all around people are screaming WTF was that?" is almost always the stuff  we don't know. That we don't know.

If I had told my paternal Ph.D. grandfather (chemist) that someday a multi-trillion dollar industry would spring from compressing sand and then passing one and zeroes through that compressed sand ... I'd still have a knot on my head where he whomped me for stating something so ludicrous.

Respectfully saying,  it's what we don't know that we don't know that's so damn dangerous.
