Not like the old app was perfect. It was horribly slow and liked to randomly crash in my experience. But I don't think I've played since the update so I don't know how it compares.

A few days ago EA starting selling a ton of board games on Steam. All are priced $9.99, and they are all crap. They advertise multiplayer, but they are only single computer hotseat (where you get up and let someone else sit down) style multiplayer. They were all created by popcap as well.

"Who wants to play it in six languages?" player Helen Hawkins, from Kent, asked the BBC.

I dunno, presumably some fraction of about 1.5 billion people roughly (excluding the original English)?

/losing years of player stats and connections to other players seems a bad move however, you would have thought that would be a key requirement in any such upgrade

I think the article is about the Facebook app, but yeah, if you've ever played the crashy mess on mobile made by EA, then you'd understand why Words With Friends was so much more popular.

The official American/Canadian  word list (TWL) is based on Webster's Official Scrabble Word Dictionary, or was at least assembled in association with Merriam-Webster's.   In the UK and other commonwealth nations the word list used to be based on Chambers dictionary, but in 2005 it was changed to the Collins dictionary, so EA switching to Collins is technically correct.  This accounts for differences in spelling, etc.
Outside of the the US and Canada, the tournament word list used is a combination of the US and British lists, and is known as SOWPODS.

EA and practically every other maker of "free" games. No one is making games as some sort of charity project. You'll either pay or advertisers will.

I have the app in question. It was undoubtedly better before.

The worst part though is that once a day, it sends me a message reminding me "Hey you haven't played Scrabble in a minute why don't you play some Scrabble." Between that and this I may finally convert to words with friends.

Shouldn't tournament play in Canada actually allow both? In Canadian English most spellings are allowed but we adhere to British spelling for words far more than American.

I have both apps, as some friends are playing Scrabble and some WWF. The only advantage the Scrabble app had before was that it kept a running total of your score as you were laying down tiles, which was nice. But now WWF has that too. WWF also keeps a handy reminder in my notification tray that I have x number of games waiting for moves, whereas that reminder for Scrabble is not pinned to my notification centre so it inevitably vanishes and I forget about the games.

Wrong.  EA has stopped selling anything on Steam (old titles are still available, and new Sims DLCs are being released, but that was it), because they are trying to force Origin on everybody.

Remember when pop culture would have mistakes in it, like continuity errors, a bad vocal mix, some out-of-place pixels, and everybody would just kind-of sigh and barely notice it?

Seems like nowadays, a significant amount of our culture is complaining about some other aspect, and how it isn't good enough for us. Can we go back to making things, instead of criticizing things other people have made? Is this what happens when we run out of ideas?

Man, that pisses me off.  I leave notifications on because it tells me when an opponent has played a word but jeez...

EA screwed the pooch on this one.  Most annoying is the removal of local LAN/bluetooth play.  Not only are you reliant on EA's serves being up (sound familiar?) but now when my wife's iPad 1 drops wi-fi (which it does a lot) we have to stop to fix that.  Also the delay between an opponent playing a turn and seeing it on your board went from 0.5 sec (bluetooth) to 2-5 seconds.

Wow, something is broken in Steam.

If you click "Popcap" under publishers at the bottom of the screen (under "Publisher Catalogs), the newest results are even older (2010) than the EA ones.  But if you click Popcap on your link (on the right with the rest of the game's data), it doesn't link those items, but just the new board games you are talking about.  Looks like the new titles are listed as the publisher being "Popcap" and the older titles are listed as the publisher being "PopCap Games, Inc.".

You can see why I missed them.

EA once made a version of Monopoly for Gameboy that didn't have the ability to save your game in progress. Most games had the ability to save to a little battery on the cartridge. EA didn't bother. They didn't even give it a password-save ability. If you wanted to play Monopoly you had to play the WHOLE game, or quit in the middle (or leave your Gameboy on pause, I suppose).

Some games of Monopoly can last longer than the battery on a Gameboy.

EA is so incompetent, they took a finished game, chopped out assloads of content and shipped it out - with the intention of reinserting it into the game as DLC. This led to the heads and founders of the development firm publicly railing EA and then dissolving their company and selling its shell back to Electronic Arts...

QUICK! Am I talking about BioWare (R.I.P.) or DICE (Good riddance).

I'm confused. Is this a UK-only thing? EA's been in charge of the mediocre - but still better than Words With Friends - Scrabble app for quite some time in the US.
