"Cinderella story......"

2013-06-14 10:27:34 AM
If the course manager leaves the rough alone, we'll see more strained elbows as the players try to blast the balls out of that deep stuff.

It's The US Open.  That's the way the rough *should* play.  That's why they call it "rough" .

If any of you thought that a short and wet course would allow the field to go deep red - well yesterday was the day that blew those ideas into a pot bunker.

I think the course will continue to show well, and those who can play Fairways and Greens (and work the correct angles into the pin placements) will rise to the top of the leaderboard.

Day 2... looking forward to seeing what you bring.  Have already seen some good shots and a little bit of drama.

Golf Digest (or maybe Golf Magazine) had an interview with the greenskeeper. He described the rough like "hitting out of a pile of ropes" and mentioned that he doesn't spray it for crabgrass. He also said that his ideal Open green would be one where you could drop a bowling ball onto it from 500 feet, and have the ball bounce.

Yesterday's rain may have prevented a Massacre at Winged Foot scenario.

It mostly comes down to if you play golf or not. My dad has been a golf nut my entire life and I kind of avoided playing it for most of my life. Then I picked up the game heavily in the last couple years and I find myself watching it a lot more, especially the Majors.

They're wicker baskets, Merion has used them since 1915.  I've read conflicting reports about whether or not they were put in place specifically to prevent players from reading the wind or if it's just "one of those things".

It's no where nearly dramatic as half.  They're playing the east course, which is around 6,900 yards.  The last 3 Open courses were roughly 7,100, 7,500, and 7,000.  It does have a more compact feel overall though, tight fairways, high rough, etc.

It's located right in the middle of a closely knit residential area and some of the grandstands are on local residents property.  It's been kind of a logistical nightmare for this kind of event.  But definitely a cool course.

If it wasn't for the fact that Generic PGA Tour Guy has to have a corporate-molded persona that makes NASCAR's Jimmy Johnson look like Metta World Peace, the choice is so painfully obvious that it almost seems counter-intuitive.

Picture this: it's a week after a major, so this year we're either talking about Harbour Town, the Greater Hartford Open, the Canadian Open, or the Greater Greensboro Open. CBS is showing the leaderboard on Saturday. Who's sitting at the bottome of the first page, about 3 or 4 shots off the lead?

I don't see why, since you have to take another club out of your bag to put that fifth wedge in.  A friend of mine plays with driver, 2 and 3 hybrid, 4-9 iron, and four wedges.  If the course sets up such that you think a fifth wedge is going to be more useful than carrying one of your longer clubs, then why not?

My bag is driver, 3 and 5 wood, 21 degree hybrid, 5-9 iron, PW, GW, SW, LW, and putter. There's a reason they call the short ones the "scoring clubs"- I like hunting flagsticks, not trying half-wedge shots. I ain't Seve.

Charley Hoffman, that's who.

This is why I have you favorited as "Generic PGA Tour Guy christener"

W.C.fields forever: Joey Jo Jo Jr Shabadu: W.C.fields forever: I heard yesterday this course is half the size of any normal course.
The announcer said yesterday that this place is so quirky that the
fans actually have to cut through a guys backyard to get on the course.

You are correct.I meant to mention the 110 acres is half the size of past US Opens

Ah, that makes much more sense. This should give you an idea about the setup:

It's Rick Reilly so take that for what it's worth. I disagree with him on Merion. I think the golfers mixing it up in the local residences is kind of cool.

Chris Berman is an awful human being.

Congrats to Grayson Murray for all but locking up DFL with rounds of 83 and 81.  Obviously getting bounced from two separate collegiate golf programs in your freshman year was the ticket to success in the big leagues.

Course tricked up. Course not tricked up enough. Fairways too narrow. Greens 'Unfair' (god, I LOATHE that term. They may be shiat greens for a variety of reasons, but everybody plays on the same ones.) Not enough quality 'tang for Lindsay to cruise for after round threesomes. Too much quality 'tang around distracting The Chosen One.

Gonz: GQueue: Gonz: Good point. Charles Howell III and Sean O'Hair, then

Those are good ones.  You can't use Crane because of his bizarre joke workout videos.  He has too much personality to be Generic PGA Tour Guy.

Charley Hoffman, that's who.

A CHALLENGER APPEARS

1) He's 4 back with 2 rounds to go at the one tournament of the year where people are most likely to fall backwards.  He's hardly toast.

2) If there was an excuse needed, it would be that he effed up his elbow at TPC and it's clearly bothering him a lot.

3) Why would he need apologists?  He's the player of the year so far, and he won the Masters modulo one too-perfect approach shot.
