GQueue: Yanks_RSJ: Lord Jubjub: So what will be cut here for the third round?

Pretty hard to say since more than half the field hasn't even teed off in the 2nd round yet.  It's at +4 right now, but a virtual certainty to move.

I'm assuming it's going to be at least +6, possibly +7 with an outside chance of +8..

Definitely, there are 13 guys currently on the cut line who haven't even teed off yet and the course is playing well over par for the day and getting tougher by the minute.

W.C.fields forever: I heard yesterday this course is half the size of any normal course.
The announcer said yesterday that this place is so quirky that the
fans actually have to cut through a guys backyard to get on the course.

Cool

Rorey: 73-70: he's still in it!
Tiger: 73-70: WHAT WRONG WITH TIGER!

/apparently Stricker being without a major is one of the top 3 stories of the week

Tiger and Rory in at +3, currently T-29, I'll bet by the end of the 2nd round they're top-15 if not higher.

Adam Scott better hope the cut line moves a lot at +8.

Gonz: GQueue: They couldn't cut the rough last night because of the rain. If it rains again this afternoon and they still can't cut it, good lord.

And I absolutely love the USGA's attitude on that. "Oh, if a player hits the ball in the rough, he might dislocate every joint in his arms? Hmm. I guess he better find the fairway, then. And don't ask again about lift, clean, and place."

Who's currently Generic PGA Tour Guy - Kuchar?

And Phil loses a stroke on the first hole of the second round.  Not exactly a confidence builder.

And now Phil in the rough.  What a shame...

Looks like Phil took his stupid pills today, this should be fun.

The Smails Kid: Who's currently Generic PGA Tour Guy - Kuchar?

Yeah, until he wins a major. Once that happens, I don't know who's next on the list. Jerry Kelly's too old, or he'd be solid. Same with Brad Faxon.

I mean, some people want to find the next Tiger Woods, and that's fine. I'm looking for the next Mark McCumber... the next Frank Lickliter. Wait, I know exactly who's in the on-deck circle as Generic PGA Tour Guy when Kuchar passes the torch: Hunter Mahan. Ben Crane's in the slot.

Yeah, that's exactly why this will be fun.  All kinds of crazy Phil stuff, he's the kind of guy who will hit 4 fairways and still manage to shoot 72 today.

Or he'll shoot 80.  But either way.

Those are good ones.  You can't use Crane because of his bizarre joke workout videos.  He has too much personality to be Generic PGA Tour Guy.

It's no where nearly dramatic as half.  They're playing the east course, which is around 6,900 yards.  The last 3 Open courses were roughly 7,100, 7,500, and 7,000.  It does have a more compact feel overall though, tight fairways, high rough, etc.

It's located right in the middle of a closely knit residential area and some of the grandstands are on local residents property.  It's been kind of a logistical nightmare for this kind of event.  But definitely a cool course.

If it wasn't for the fact that Generic PGA Tour Guy has to have a corporate-molded persona that makes NASCAR's Jimmy Johnson look like Metta World Peace, the choice is so painfully obvious that it almost seems counter-intuitive.

Picture this: it's a week after a major, so this year we're either talking about Harbour Town, the Greater Hartford Open, the Canadian Open, or the Greater Greensboro Open. CBS is showing the leaderboard on Saturday. Who's sitting at the bottome of the first page, about 3 or 4 shots off the lead?

Charley Hoffman, that's who.

Guys that scream "get in the hole" on tee shots on par 5s should be ejected from the course

He did that at Augusta as well.

I think 5 wedges violates the spirit of the 14 club limit, if not the letter.

I don't see why, since you have to take another club out of your bag to put that fifth wedge in.  A friend of mine plays with driver, 2 and 3 hybrid, 4-9 iron, and four wedges.  If the course sets up such that you think a fifth wedge is going to be more useful than carrying one of your longer clubs, then why not?

2013-06-14 06:33:19 PM
He essentially has a club in the bag for every shot inside 125 yards. Not much shotmaking going on in the short game.

My bag is driver, 3 and 5 wood, 21 degree hybrid, 5-9 iron, PW, GW, SW, LW, and putter. There's a reason they call the short ones the "scoring clubs"- I like hunting flagsticks, not trying half-wedge shots. I ain't Seve.

2013-06-14 07:17:07 PM
I carry a 52 and 58, and that's it. Then again, half wedge shots (all the way down to 8 iron) don't worry me much.

Ah, that makes much more sense. This should give you an idea about the setup:

It's Rick Reilly so take that for what it's worth. I disagree with him on Merion. I think the golfers mixing it up in the local residences is kind of cool.

Congrats to Grayson Murray for all but locking up DFL with rounds of 83 and 81.  Obviously getting bounced from two separate collegiate golf programs in your freshman year was the ticket to success in the big leagues.

Course tricked up. Course not tricked up enough. Fairways too narrow. Greens 'Unfair' (god, I LOATHE that term. They may be shiat greens for a variety of reasons, but everybody plays on the same ones.) Not enough quality 'tang for Lindsay to cruise for after round threesomes. Too much quality 'tang around distracting The Chosen One.

1) He's 4 back with 2 rounds to go at the one tournament of the year where people are most likely to fall backwards.  He's hardly toast.

2) If there was an excuse needed, it would be that he effed up his elbow at TPC and it's clearly bothering him a lot.

3) Why would he need apologists?  He's the player of the year so far, and he won the Masters modulo one too-perfect approach shot.
