I really want to like Rory, because my niece knew him before he went pro, but he comes off as such a little prick sometimes

Boring. Merion's too short for modern equipment, and a rain-softened course will just make it worse. Modern pros are going to go unbelievably low here. It might take 15 under to win.

A little soon but what ev.  They better not put the Djokster and Nadal on the same side of the bracket like those stupid Frenchmen did.

"Cinderella story......"

If the course manager leaves the rough alone, we'll see more strained elbows as the players try to blast the balls out of that deep stuff.

It's The US Open.  That's the way the rough *should* play.  That's why they call it "rough" .

If any of you thought that a short and wet course would allow the field to go deep red - well yesterday was the day that blew those ideas into a pot bunker.

I think the course will continue to show well, and those who can play Fairways and Greens (and work the correct angles into the pin placements) will rise to the top of the leaderboard.

Day 2... looking forward to seeing what you bring.  Have already seen some good shots and a little bit of drama.

Golf Digest (or maybe Golf Magazine) had an interview with the greenskeeper. He described the rough like "hitting out of a pile of ropes" and mentioned that he doesn't spray it for crabgrass. He also said that his ideal Open green would be one where you could drop a bowling ball onto it from 500 feet, and have the ball bounce.

Yesterday's rain may have prevented a Massacre at Winged Foot scenario.

It mostly comes down to if you play golf or not. My dad has been a golf nut my entire life and I kind of avoided playing it for most of my life. Then I picked up the game heavily in the last couple years and I find myself watching it a lot more, especially the Majors.

Lee Westwood? Falling apart in a major championship at the slightest hint of adversity?

IMPOSSIBLE.

At least he got it out of the way early this time, last year he waited until Sunday when he hit one up in a tree before he crumbled.

They're wicker baskets, Merion has used them since 1915.  I've read conflicting reports about whether or not they were put in place specifically to prevent players from reading the wind or if it's just "one of those things".

they were not in place in the 1950 open?

on these northern golf courses tee times can be such an advantage, almost a different course

Useless piece of trivia:

You can also spot the baskets when Bond is playing golf in Goldfinger.

Watching the golf channel last night, every other commercial was telling people to play faster.

My favorite was Jack Nicklaus basically telling everyone they suck at golf and should stop trying to play from the back tees.

I should have thrown a trollface or something on that. See my later comment about the rough. I'd heard people say stuff like that about Merion, and don't think they understand just what a little badass that course is.

They couldn't cut the rough last night because of the rain.  If it rains again this afternoon and they still can't cut it, good lord.

Also, love having the first sighting of the day of a guy having to play down the wrong fairway.  Nice work, Rory.

And I absolutely love the USGA's attitude on that. "Oh, if a player hits the ball in the rough, he might dislocate every joint in his arms? Hmm. I guess he better find the fairway, then. And don't ask again about lift, clean, and place."

Pretty hard to say since more than half the field hasn't even teed off in the 2nd round yet.  It's at +4 right now, but a virtual certainty to move.

Yep. Hit a PW out like the rest of us. You aren't entitled to blast a 6 iron 200 yards out of the rough on every course. Oh, you only could advance it 30 yards? Cry harder and don't miss next time.

I heard yesterday this course is half the size of any normal course.
The announcer said yesterday that this place is so quirky that the
fans actually have to cut through a guys backyard to get on the course.

I'm assuming it's going to be at least +6, possibly +7 with an outside chance of +8..
