The problem with walking is, the more you do it, the more efficient your body becomes at doing it, burning less and less calories. We are genetically engineered that way. You end up needing to spend more and more time walking to maintain results.

You don't burn less calories over time unless you are losing weight.  For the average American moving their 300lbs a quarter mile is the same amount of calories every time they do it no matter how fast or often you do it.   As you lose weight you will have to go farther to burn more calories since you will weigh less.

SCIENCE!

Its worse than that doctor. The more you walk, the less energy it takes to move your mass even if your mass is constant and not decreasing. Why, because the muscles we use to walk are getting more efficient, burning less calories to do the same work. So, you need to devote ever more time to walking if that is your strategy for staying fit.

Of course you can catch the diabetes you get it from ingesting Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, McDonalds, Hardees, etc..., because unlike homosexuality which is a choice diabetes is a disease.

So it's obvious to you that a brisk walk after dinner (in the evening) helps move sugars from your muscles to your liver more effectively than brisk walks earlier in the day?

FTFA - That's because blood sugar spikes right after eating, but walking is able to minimize this spike and move sugar from the blood and into the muscles or liver.

I dont think science quite has this all figured out yet.

For the average American moving their 300lbs a quarter mile is the same amount of calories every time they do it no matter how fast or often you do it.

There is a minimum amount of energy it takes to move 300 lbs a quarter mile, but most people burn many more calories than that doing things like expanding and contracting muscles and breathing and all that extra stuff. The human body is not rigid and can not be treated like a box when talking about it moving itself. This extra stuff where the calorie reduction happens as the body learns which extra stuff is necessary and which is not and finds more efficient ways to do the work. They will never burn less than the minimum, but that amount is shockingly small compared to what we normally burn in exercise.

/passed this tip on to my mother who is diabetic and having trouble with morning sugar levels.

This article is pretty much contradictory to every other study about exercise and T2 diabetes which say that short brisk walks actually spike your blood sugar. Long (30+ minutes) moderate walks promote cell sensitivity to insulin, thus lowering your blood sugar levels. No I'm not a doctor, just paraphrasing everything I've read about the subject.

I started walking a few years ago during my lunch hour.  I had a horrible coworker, and needed a break from the constant carping.  Even after that situation resolved, I kept taking strolls.  I watch the people in my neighborhood power walk, jog, run, whatever, and then lay at the pool, guzzling sodas, chips and dips and complaining how they can't lose weight.  I just don't get it.  Exercise your friggin brain and make better choices.

Moving the same amount of mass from point A to point B will always burn the same amount of calories no matter how "efficient" your muscles are at it.  That is my point.  I think the confusion is that when people get in better shape and become lighter they find it harder to lose weight as easy as when they were huge, that is because the mass is smaller.

Muscles being "efficient" has nothing to do with how many calories are burned.  A 300lb guy with very efficient muscles (whatever that means) will burn the same amount of calories walking around the block as a 300lb guy with 50% body fat and "inefficient" muscles.  Hell, one of them could run and it would burn the same amount of calories, he'd just do it much faster.

Walking was effective at curbing blood sugar spikes after any meal, but researchers found that when it comes to http://www.mnn.com/health/fitness-well-being/questions/can-diabetes-b e -prevented">preventing diabetes, the most effective time to go for a post-meal walk was after dinner - the largest meal of the day - which also causes the greatest rise in blood sugar.

Wait, the article is saying that "the largest meal of the day" is the time you should be walking but also it is saying "dinner".

Which is it?  My largest meal of the day varies on my schedule.  "Dinner" is not always at a specific time and is not always the largest meal of the day.

Should I assume they meant to say, "Walking after eating a large meal increases the chances of not acquiring Type 2 diabetes"?
