That's it.  I'm retiring to Nevada.  Next week.

I wonder if they'll honor cards from other states.

Whoa.  When I was younger slipping over the border into Nevada was seriously dangerous if you were a pothead.  They would vacuum your car and if they found so much as a seed you were in for years of hard time.  Are they turning out the prisons as well?  Is there some sort of compensation program for the oppressed cancer patients?

It's crazy how they've seemingly got all these great liberal policies but the state is still wracked with crushing poverty.

I'm waiting for a state to just shrug, say "fark it", and go full state's rights by legalizing internally produced drugs of various kinds for recreational use straight-up.

Not really possible for a big state with economic interests heavily dependent on federal cooperation like California, but smaller states with a mostly-domestic economy like Wyoming have rebelled over stuff like that before.

No auto emissions tests? Those are EPA regulated, you can't just opt out.

I lived there 8 years, never had an emissions test,  dont have one here in Illinois either.

I had a car that smoked for 1 whole trip home from work while I lived in las vegas due to a mechanical breakdown.  I got a warning from the state that another citizen had seen my car smoking and if I didnt get it fixed I would be fined.  So during that 15 minute trip, I had been reported for pollution.

So the state CARES, they just dont make you prove it every year like some stated.

scratch that, I did have smog tests in las vegas.  Confusing my states in my old age

They also have the lowest high school graduation rate in the country. Without an educated population, it isn't easy to keep an economy running, even with liberal government policies.

A lot of Nevada business law is shaped by the Casinos, namely "f%$# the worker".  For all you ultra right wing types who believe deregulation is the answer, take a look at Nevada.  We've been a deregulated business haven shaped by the "guiding invisible hand" for the last 50+ years, and shocker, we have the worst unemployment in the nation.

Abacus9: No auto emissions tests? Those are EPA regulated, you can't just opt out.

You have to get them in the two most populated counties, Clark (which covers Vegas) and Washoe (which covers Reno).  Been that way for as long as I remember.  Carson City recently added emissions checks, but only on cars newer than 2006 (or in there).  Regardless, I've never had to smog check any vehicle I've owned in this state, ever, because I technically live in the sticks.

Uhm no, they aren't.  As a former casino security guard (shut up, I needed the money) several black spots on my lungs can tell you they are not smoke free at all.  At best you can find some token "non-smoking areas" within the big-name casinos.  Almost invariably, someone sits down there and starts smoking.

Methinks Nevada is trying wayyyy too hard to attract more residents.  The state looks great on paper, until I realize I would never really want to live there.  It's like a job that advertises amazing fringe benefits in large type font, and then the fine print says you'll be mopping jizz for 2 bucks an hour.

When things were good it was no problem at all. As long as you could count to 21 or dance around a pole you could make a ton of money without a high school diploma. Not so much anymore.

/ I live in Vegas and I think people here would be more excited about meth dispensaries than marijuana dispensaries.

// Subby probably knows already but prostitution is not legal in heavily populated areas like Vegas and Reno. The rest of the state is barren and radioactive.

Honestly the worst thing you have to deal with is the excessive dryness.  When it rains here the humidity can be as low as 40%. Plus side is, the statement "but its a dry heat" really does apply.  104 degrees outside (which the Reno hits maybe two weeks out of the year) feels a lot better when it's only 18% humidity.  Just make sure to drink a lot of water.

Really, once you get used to all the perks of the state you have trouble living anywhere else.  Things never close here.  We have no last call, yes, but most of our grocery stores stay open 24/7.  And casinos aren't just for gambling either.  I can get up at 3am and roll into Carson City for breakfast, lunch, or dinner of good quality at a reasonable price.  And now we have medicinal MJ... or more accurately, we won't have to drive to the dispensaries in California to get it.

Don't base your perceptions of Nevada on Vegas.  Vegas is almost its own state.

Nevada isn't so much "liberal" as it is libertarian. Liberal economic theories don't advocate a system without income tax (because shifting the burden to sales taxes and such is a boon to the wealthy, but sucks for people who wouldn't have to pay income tax). And Nevada was mostly a western conservative state until the expansion of the Las Vegas and Reno areas... so even if it has started voting more for democrats in the last decade or so, they haven't really had time to reap any benefits of that (if there exist any).

Now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever had one done, and that's in Michigan. I meant more that the testing is done before the car hits the market, and that's true in every state. Here I guess after it's bought it doesn't matter, and older cars even get grandfathered in.

I can't think of a casino in Vegas that has a non-smoking section at all, other than the poker rooms.

When we start electing Congresscritters based primarily on repealing the federal ban. Only an act of Congress can do it because the Supreme Court sure as hell is not, and the FDA and DEA can't overturn the original law.

Nevada has currently 15.9% of it's population crushed by poverty.
California 16.6
Texas 18.5
Louisiana 20.4%

Highest % goes to Mississippi with 22.6
Lowest goes to New Hampshire with 8.8.

Crushing?  Not so much.

If your state starts to hit bad ozone numbers on a regular basis, then testing starts County by County.  When I moved to Austin (Travis County), there were no tests there, but in Houston there was.  A couple years later, the first Ozone Days were noted in Austin, and when they increased, it was reported that if numbers didn't lower, Austin would start testing.  A year or two later the testing started.

Subby, what's not fun about liberal gun laws?  Though the Legislature was trying to amend that, and make it a violence-free paradise by requiring background checks on private sales...vetoed by Governor Sandoval (Yahoo!).

Yes. Credit cards. They have no problem with out of state, or out of country credit cards. Bring lots of 'em.

As for emissions test, if you live in Clark or Washoe county (Vegas or Reno), you'll have to get an emissions test even in Nevada.

Negative, I've lived in California, Las Vegas, NV and Wisconsin. Both California and Las Vegas had emissions tests, certain area's in Wisconsin do as well but I don't live in one of those area's so I have not had a smog check in 10 years (since I moved here)

It depends on where you are.  The EPA only mandates them in areas with too much pollution.

AverageAmericanGuy: It's crazy how they've seemingly got all these great liberal policies but the state is still wracked with crushing poverty.

The basic problem is that we are *VERY* dependent on tourist dollars.  When the economy imploded the number of tourist dollars dropped considerably.

That has nothing to do with worker protections.  Strong protections would have increased the unemployment rate as it they would have meant many businesses would have been forced under rather than simply shrinking.

Not to be nit-picky, but California actually contributes more to the Fed than it takes in.  Whereas, Wyoming not so much.  Just a point of information.
