my my my how lucky you all are!
you get me for the WHOLE Caturday!
Yippie!!! yay!!!

yes I'm being a smartarse as my usual.
is that a good thing or not? hmmm...

anyways I went to my best friends grad and I was definitely beaming and out shining everyone else there with my huge smile of happiness :D

....annnnnd then because I was allowed one day of true happiness I then found out that my mom's close friend the one with brain cancer, decided and I quote: "I've quite had enough of cancer's bullshiat, and it can go rightly F*CK itself!" and just like that she was gone. :(
Not gonna lie - as bad as it was for me to do, I laughed when my mom told me that.

Happy Father's Day to all of the dads out there! My Dad hated cats and refused to ever let me have one, but he did buy me a little grey tabby cat toy when I was really little which may have had an influence on my future kitty choices.

Dad (yes, that is a 2 year old Catmandu all bundled up):

Happy weekend! Er, I mean it was. I can tell by all the sand in my teeth.

Also, I snagged this picture of the North America nebula:

Not totally thrilled with it, but at least I'm imaging again...
Also, I brought along a little UV flashlight, and went scorpion hunting.
I found dozens of the little bastards.

Gently

Moving gently
Away.

Evaporating,
Like a mist

At sunrise.

Never seen
Again.

Alive in
Memory.

Mind's shadow,
Playing across
The room.

Empty space.
Begs to be filled.

Peacefully asleep,
Now slipping
Past

The veil.

In to the
Summerlands.

Unable to say,
Goodbye.

Merely Fare the Well,
And with a flick of the tail,

A final glance over the shoulder,
Turn and fade softly away.

lilyspad: Oh man...my back and shoulders are on fire right now. Sleeping will be fun tonight.

Before you go to bed, take a bath. Fill an old nylon stocking toe with about 1/2 cup of oatmeal and tie shut with room to allow the oatmeal to double. Soak it and squeeze the milky water over the sunburned parts. When most of the oatmeal has dissolved and your bath water is pretty opaque, slide down and soak some more. Oatmeal is soothing, will cool the burn, and will help the burned skin retain moisture.

tigerose: *thread jack* I need opinions..while on vacation my Mom wants to go to a family reunion. It is a 6 hr. drive...which I did not know. Plus we cannot leave her cat for too long. Mackinaw city, MI to Appleton WI...so, we could drive like maniacs the day of, them stay overnight and leave to return at the crack of dawn..or, we could drive dwn to luddington, take the Ferry-4 hrs!- then finish the trip...I just don't know if I want to travel that far for a 4 hr. picnic!
*end thread jack*

Joking answer: drive faster (I have no idea what traffic is like where you are, but 6 hours for a 284 mile drive seems a bit much, says the person who made it from Key West to NW NJ {1400+ miles} in less than 16 hours. And no, I did not get a ticket).

i415.photobucket.com i415.photobucket.com

Serious answer: do you like these people? Do you want to see them? Is it the last chance to see a relative who may not make it much longer? Is it worth the trip? Only you can decide what is best.

Well!
That was sure an interesting evening!

So I went to go have dinner with my best friend and I could smell smoke.
I at first thought someone was having a BBQ but then when I walked outside you couldn't
see the houses across the street or down.
So I headed on my way and found out that something happened to one of the new condo buildings down the street and around the corner :(
Such a huge fire.

Upon returning I couldn't help myself and I walked over to where some the residents were wandering about clutching their beloved pets.
Without thinking it through... I...
I gave them my phone number and told them if anyone needs pet supplies or sheets, towels, toiletries, food - whatever it doesn't matter - to call me and I'll see what I can give them. The place I'm stuck at they are close to hoarders so I figure I would rather see some stuff go to people in need due to the fire than to let it get wasted and tossed in the garbage.
That and I also figure this way it helps out those who are need and helps these guys declutter a little bit.

And I do not regret my offer to help at all.
I've been there myself - I like to pay it forward as much as I can :)

mafiageek1980: Salem Witch: chicken_little: lilyspad: Welcome! Stay and play with us.....scritches to Roxy!

Thank you! Roxy is passed out next to me right now. She woke me up early and of course went back to sleep.

Same here. I had a cold wet nose nudging my elbow early this morning. Suzy was all hoppity-skippity all over the house, we went out for our morning walkies and now she is snoring on her living room bed.

How old is Suzy anyway? I've been meaning to ask you that for a while.

We think she is about nine years old. We have had her a little over four years now.

imageshack.us

We don't know much about her past. Some of her behaviors have led us to think she was not treated so nice. She would hide if either one of us moved our hands quickly. She did get over that but she still won't be in the same room when I fold laundry, it scares her. She is terrified of the sound of ice, like trembling and hiding under the dresser terrified.

It's probably a good thing I don't know much about her past, it might make me go all stabby n stuff.

She really is a sweet gentle dog.

I just got the call from Mountain Vista Animal Hospital to bring my cat in tomorrow morning for his surgery! Several people made some substantial donations (and many more made a ton of little ones) towards his vet bills. Hopefully the cancer hasn't spread and Sugarbear will live the rest of his life as a couch potato tripod.

Wow! That would've freaked me out. Horses don't generally relax in that manner, do they?

Only if they feel safe, he and Mountain take turns. I have never seen them both laying down at the same time. Mountain was standing in the shade nearby. I have no idea why they like that spot in the drive, but they have a big hollow in that spot.
Don't tell Castle but when I looked to see where Mountain was I saw that he was sleeping too. At least he was in the shade and on his feet. I wouldn't trust him as a guard horse.
It did freak me out a little, I walked out there and woke him up, to make sure he was OK.

Coinsidence? I think not.....(I can't spell right now) :D

I have been trying to unpack a few boxes a day but I put all the stupid chickens on a book shelf and then had to unpack four boxes of books today. Broke out the hammer and nails and up went most of the chickens.

It was very warm today, 101 heat index. The house does not have central air so I run a small window unit in the bedroom and keep Li-Ion and Max in there. I have a swamp cooler for the main part of the house but its still so hot in here that my chocolate chips melted into a bar in the cupboards. Makes it hard to get much done when it's that warm.

I went outside at about 3 or 4 this afternoon and this was in my driveway:

I sympathize. Dragon hates the carrier with the passion of a thousand suns. I take the carrier, put in a clean towel, stand it on end and prop it up in the corner of my big closet. Don gauntlets (heavy leather work gloves), scruff cat with one hand, back legs with the other, run to closet, drop cat in, and try to slam the door as fast as possible before additional appendages make an appearance.

D'awwwww..... you're a good man!

I try. I help out with housework. I come straight home from work (other than stopping on the way home to visit my 90 y/o parents for 10 or 15 minutes). I don't chase other women. I try not to spend frivolously, other than keeping bourbon and beer in the house and purchasing the occasional fine piece of cutlery, neither of which are frivolous, right? And she's the same, including the not chasing other women part, and substitute Diet Mountain Dew for booze and novels for cutlery.

Love her to pieces.

After 15 minutes, we got all 4 legs, a tail, body, and head in the crate. Get in the car, and all the way to the vet.. Mrrrrrowwwww, and low growls. He did GREAT at the vet. Not a problem. Maybe he was scared. Don't know. Oh well, he took his shots like a champ and let the vet put him in the crate. Ungrateful little shiat. LOL Look how content he is at the vet. Traitor.

Mostly lurking lately, just can't get time to post much, but thought this might give some of you a chuckle:

This morning, I ran myself a bath intending read for a bit and then wash my hair. Mia always sits on the side of the bathtub while I'm in there, she loves it and has even tried sitting on my chest while I was in there - didn't work out the way she had planned ;) Sploosh! Ahhhhh! Mom! Water!!! *panic* Much blood ensued. And pain, owww.

Anyway, today she got up on the towel I put on the edge to dry my hands so I don't ruin my book, and shook herself - depositing an awe inspiring quantity of cat fur in my bath water. After trying in vain to remove it, I gave in and gave her the moist hand petting 'bath' to remove hair, got out of the tub, and am waiting for the water to drain before I head back in for a shower. LOL. Yes, I sat in the bathtub and groomed the cat...

It's good to be back home!! Just spent the last 5 weeks in Michigan, taking care of my mom after her surgery. They live out in the middle of nowhere, and had a crappy computer, hardly any RAM, small HD, ect.. Forget trying to even load Caturday.  My husband came and picked me up 2 days ago, and brought them a new computer. Now they have a fast as lightening one, now that I am home. LOL  Anyway I have a lot of catching up to do, and lots of apology tuna to dish out to Wentworth. Don't have any recent pics of him, but I do have a pic of a turkey in my parents yard. All animals in Caturday, right?

RadicalEd: 4seasons85!: RadicalEd: 4seasons85!: I know this is late but I need some advice if possible. I am likely moving soon. Should I drive with two cats (it could take a week) or risk flying with them in the airplane cabin?

Most airlines only allow one pet per seat - so with two cats, they would probably make you buy two seats. Some you have to store the animals in the back, and some you can keep them under the seat in front of you if the carrier fits (so I would get a soft carrier, if they allow that). Either way, look up the airline regulations on pets first.

As for driving, I say go for it. Where are you driving from/to? I drove with two cats from Ohio to New Mexico, and then New Mexico to Oregon. I got a couple of disposable litter pans, gave them food and water when I stopped for gas/food/bathroom, but they were too miserable to do more than just sleep. My cats would cry for a bit and then be resigned to their fate for the rest of the journey. I stopped for the night in reserved hotel/motels that allowed pets, and that's where they would chow down and empty their bladders since there wasn't the stress of a moving vehicle. I strongly recommend keeping the cats in a carrier if they're not used to the car - my Ivan decided he was going to get out of the carrier during morning rush hour traffic outside Indianapolis AND stood on the window button making the window come down while going 50+ mph while I was trying to merge in said rush hour traffic. Needless to say, I had a heart attack and it still makes me ill to my stomach thinking about it!

I say drive if it's possible. My cats are so-so in the car, but I just imagine it's 100 times worse flying with mine. Plus, I was never able to get anything soothing down their throats, so no meds or tranqs.

Unfortunately, there's a lot of factors to consider with both options!

Thanks so much! You are right that there are pros and cons to both. I am considering driving more now. It is from Vegas to Juneau, AK. So as you can imag ...

Thanks again for the advice. Despite really wanting to go for the job, I may turn it down now that I have thought long and hard about moving there. There is far more involved than I initially thought. The risks of moving with my cats are very high for them. I would be going to a place that has a significant cost of living increase and I am just starting to build a savings after living paycheck to paycheck for a couple years. I would have to sell all my stuff or have it shipped for a lot of money. Then there is the fact that there is no family help for miles. So despite my love of the place and obsession with wanting to live in the wilderness, I do not think it is going to happen.

You know, he just might appreciate being cared for... Fred did....  maybe you can set up some kind of living quarters outside for him... shelter from the weather, etc... he does have some trust in you.. when you bring him back, have some noms there for him as an apology for trapping him... best for both of you.... it would be better to bring him inside, but circumstances won't allow that, as I can't bring Fred in either...  you would get hollered at, I would face a war :o).....  there are options that are acceptable to all....   we all know that you will do the right thing..  just make sure that he,s upwind if you partake of hushpuppies... otherwise, he may try to cover you up... it would take him a while to dig a hole that big !

This morning he would hardly put his foot down, so i did a thorough inspection of his foot. My big baby is limping and whining because he broke a nail. I do realize how painful that can be to a dog and I cleaned it up and will wait til tomorrow to see if he needs the vet.

i have two kittehs botx tuxedos one named Milo and one named Otis
a year ago i found a little tuxedo cat in my yard.
really thin and meowing so i fed it
for the next year or so i would wake up and find this cat outside my apt in the morning just waiting.
so id feed it
at first it would run away but not too long after i was able to pet it
i named it Max (totally arbitrary)
well over the winter it got frighteningly cold so i lured Max into the basement with hopes of getting him checked out and bringing him in for good
but the landlords found him and he made a swift exit before i could carry out my plan
a few weeks went by and no Max
i was a little concerned because Max was always pretty reliable in showing up and even if I didnt see him in the morning Id see the cat somewhere in the neighborhood
well one day i was sitting outside before work and feeding Max when i noticed it was a she not a he (in which i decided that on adoption i would change her name to Andi to go with the name scheme)
anyway long story short i went out and spoke to a vet about my plan and got the cost for treatments with vaccines and such
but my concern was that she might have a litter somewhere and i didnt want to take her away from it
so the plan became to follow her until i found out for sure
but id find her curled up in the grass or the shadow of the house every morning and shed let me pet her for a little while before she ate
well its been a few months now and I havent seen sight of Max
I have no idea how old she was but her face showed some years and scars on it
I do miss seeing her in the morning before work
and it is sad
but i like to look on the bright side of things
for that year i think i made her life a little better and a little safer even for a little while

nekom: Hey cat folks!  My last childhood pet I'd had since I was 12 crossed that rainbow bridge a few years ago, after nearly 20 years on this Earth.  She was a pure white cat, unknown breed from a stray litter born outside of a video store my aunt worked at at the time.  My daughter is half the age I was then, but I want her to have a similar experience.  So here's my question:  Keeping in mind that I will ONLY consider rescue/shelter animals, what traits should I look for in a cat to have the best chance at a long life?

I got a kitten that had been abandoned. He died last year, age 20. In assessing how long a cat will live, the most useful info would be how long its ancestors lived, which is most likely not going to be available in a rescue cat. My strategy would be to make sure it's presently healthy and if its breed can be ascertained, look up the longevity of the breed. Feed it a good diet, get its teeth cleaned regularly and take it for vet checkups, and also keep it indoors. The world, even in a leafy suburban neighborhood, is a dangerous place for cats. I've seen a number of neighborhood cats go missing, and I suspect somebody around here is making that happen.

Well, this is a major issue at our house right now. My wife used to be a dog person, but married into my cats (too many! years ago. Years, not cats). (My line "I had cats before marriage, and I will have the same cats after marriage" when we argued). My son always has been around cats and despite when he was 4 wanting a dog is now a full time cat person. (I had to laugh when in second grade he brought in "catopoly" for board game day and came home all upset because only GIRLS wanted to play it). Today during the humane society book sale I met the first dog I would like to adopt. 7 year old mixed breed, Very mellow (his nickname was prozac) and seems like he would get along with our two cats. I can't get either the wife or son out to look at the guy. For a dog he was awesome. Huge thing, very low key friendly, the sort of dog that would go great with an elderly person. To be honest, I am going to ask around at the local assisted living place that the wife and I volunteer at to see if anyone wants to go visit with the intention to adopt.

Best plan yet.

My first ever feline overlord came to me because I decided I was eventually going to get a cat. I went to the humane society to "just see what was available". This grey kitty was hiding in the back of the kennel as I was checking out all of the kitties. Next time I passed by his kennel, he was at the door. I looked at him, he stuck a paw out between the bars and meowed at me. When I took him in my hands, he rubbed his cheek on my cheek, started purring, and curled up against my chest and took a snooze. Needless to say, he was home with me that evening and was with me for almost 18 years.

Hello everybodeee!

 ^-^
='.'=

nekom: Hey cat folks!

There's no guarantee for fur people as to lifespan. All I can suggest is one who is healthy to start.
Length-of-life is no way to measure the love, joy and companionship an animal shares with you.
Kaminari was with us for only 8 years, but she still lives in our memories as one of the best.
Baby Shimrod had 6 weeks with me...but I will never forget...or regret the joy and laughter and sheer love we'd managed to cultivate in that time.
It hurts when they have to go, and you want to put that off as long as you can...but don't make that a reason NOT to adopt...that they may not live long enough to suit you. They will stay with you as long as they can, and will love and live in every minute they have with you.

canavar: Hi folks!

First, I want to thank  MizMezcalita again for the month of TF. This is the first time I have been privileged enough to get here early. TY!!

Dijon is doing AMAZINGLY well...she has been at the vet getting daily care for 10 days now and WOW. I couldn't get there  Tuesday or Wednesday but i went yesterday and for the first time since the day the vet picked her up, i looked at her underside. it looks fantastic...i mean it still looks bad....but BUT it looks worlds better than it did.

I brought her some of her favorite foods and a brush. She is kind of a mess still and really needs a bath but it has to wait a while longer. She is sporting a cone-of-shame too, so she cant even groom herself. So i helped her out. It was probably the first time in her life she had ever been brushed and she loved it!

I also decided that when the vet lets her leave, she will just come home with me. She will need to stay in the carrier for a while anyway(it is a decent-sized carrier) so I figured I can just keep her upstairs in my room with the door closed. The 3 other cats won't be happy but they will live.

I haven't named him. It seems kind of futile.
I call him "Kitty Kitty" as in "Here Kitty kitty kitty kitty".

I haven't seen him since the tree folks were here to cut up the fallen limbs & stuff.
I think the chainsaw freaked him out.

I haz a sad.
I really think Bruce has crossed the Bridge.
When I left the house 6/3 Bruce was not acting right,
He was keeping to himself, and just lying in the grass by the tree line.
I left him with my husband to help give my husband a reason to carry on, and because
I felt Bruce would be happier in his own territory.
He was born under a shed near the house, and had come to me from the woods one day.
He just claimed the house as his, but only for food and shelter. He did not use a litter box.
The woods were his litter box, thank you. end of discussion.
When I left I did call my mobile vet to go out to check on Bruce. He did treat him symptomatically, gave him a shot of antibiotics and steroids and showed my husband how to do sub-Q fluids.
But my husband let Bruce go out the next day, and after taking his spot at the tree line for a while he just disappeared. He hasn't been seen again.
I am sad, but I really feel Bruce would have been miserable living indoors, or in a strange land.
Now, my gut tells me has gone to become a forever part of the land he loved. He will become one with the woods, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
/sorry for the wall of words...I have to vent this pain somewhere.

Cats, like hoomins, unfortunately do not come with a warranty. IMO, all you can do is give them the best care possible, and cherish the time you have with them - it's always going to be shorter than we might wish for. Each day is a gift, that's why it's called the present.

Faust was our box loving cat. And drawers. You couldn't open a drawer without him hearing and jumping right in. The other 2, not so much. Every once in a while, I'll find him in the box that I have for them in the kitchen. I don't think I've ever seen Racer in a box

Not to be confused with this Maggie who I fostered and still get to see and take care of when my friends are on vacation.

I fell in love with Maggie when I volunteered at a shelter.  I convinced my friend to adopt her. When I went to my friend's house I would pick up and cuddle with Maggie, she wouldn't even let my friend do that.  Unfortunately we aren't friends anymore, I don't particularly care about that, but it makes me so sad that I'll never see Maggie again.

I fell in love with it when I first saw it, but when I looked at it closer and saw that Juno has a cigarette in her paw I knew that this was indeed the best photoshop ever!!!

nekom: Hey cat folks!

You really can't tell how long a specific cat will live, but you can adopt a cat that has a more developed personality (closer to 1 year of age or older) if you were looking for another trait such as a cuddler, or a lap cat.  It is probably the best idea to spend time at the cat rescue place to see which cat picks you.  Don't be afraid of picking an older cat, they need someone to love them too.   :)

I think Juno might be trying to ship Morticia somewhere.  Juno isn't very fond of her little sister.
