I haz a sad.
I really think Bruce has crossed the Bridge.
When I left the house 6/3 Bruce was not acting right,
He was keeping to himself, and just lying in the grass by the tree line.
I left him with my husband to help give my husband a reason to carry on, and because
I felt Bruce would be happier in his own territory.
He was born under a shed near the house, and had come to me from the woods one day.
He just claimed the house as his, but only for food and shelter. He did not use a litter box.
The woods were his litter box, thank you. end of discussion.
When I left I did call my mobile vet to go out to check on Bruce. He did treat him symptomatically, gave him a shot of antibiotics and steroids and showed my husband how to do sub-Q fluids.
But my husband let Bruce go out the next day, and after taking his spot at the tree line for a while he just disappeared. He hasn't been seen again.
I am sad, but I really feel Bruce would have been miserable living indoors, or in a strange land.
Now, my gut tells me has gone to become a forever part of the land he loved. He will become one with the woods, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
/sorry for the wall of words...I have to vent this pain somewhere.

Don't apologize for sharing such a wonderful story about an important life.
You remind us all about how precious our time is with the friends we love.

Lily did the same to me this morning.....at 12:30.  She decided that would be a good time to attack my feet.  I finally had to "thwack" her with my pillow to get her to stop!  Then she decided to use the carpet as a scratching post!  ARGH!!  She's sleeping soundly now....

We think she is about nine years old. We have had her a little over four years now.

imageshack.us

We don't know much about her past. Some of her behaviors have led us to think she was not treated so nice. She would hide if either one of us moved our hands quickly. She did get over that but she still won't be in the same room when I fold laundry, it scares her. She is terrified of the sound of ice, like trembling and hiding under the dresser terrified.

It's probably a good thing I don't know much about her past, it might make me go all stabby n stuff.

She really is a sweet gentle dog.

Well, this is a major issue at our house right now. My wife used to be a dog person, but married into my cats (too many! years ago. Years, not cats). (My line "I had cats before marriage, and I will have the same cats after marriage" when we argued). My son always has been around cats and despite when he was 4 wanting a dog is now a full time cat person. (I had to laugh when in second grade he brought in "catopoly" for board game day and came home all upset because only GIRLS wanted to play it). Today during the humane society book sale I met the first dog I would like to adopt. 7 year old mixed breed, Very mellow (his nickname was prozac) and seems like he would get along with our two cats. I can't get either the wife or son out to look at the guy. For a dog he was awesome. Huge thing, very low key friendly, the sort of dog that would go great with an elderly person. To be honest, I am going to ask around at the local assisted living place that the wife and I volunteer at to see if anyone wants to go visit with the intention to adopt.

Ivan loves himself some boxes, but we don't normally have too many around. They both like to rub their faces on any corners though. We have enough packed boxes sitting around since we have no room to store them, but not open ones for them to jump into.

They never cared for bags much, but lately, this paper bag is the THING! Ivan actually was persuaded to go into it this morning and just now turned himself in a circle inside it and laid down to sleep.

I grew them some cat grass to munch on, but so far, there is little munching. I think they want to, they just don't know how to go about eating it. They also have few teeth left - I didn't think about this. I cut off some of the grass and put it onto a plate which they'll look at every now and then. But right now I'm thinking it was kind of waste since they're not really getting into it...

Ivan, looking very mean in his bag:

nekom: Hey cat folks!  My last childhood pet I'd had since I was 12 crossed that rainbow bridge a few years ago, after nearly 20 years on this Earth.  She was a pure white cat, unknown breed from a stray litter born outside of a video store my aunt worked at at the time.  My daughter is half the age I was then, but I want her to have a similar experience.  So here's my question:  Keeping in mind that I will ONLY consider rescue/shelter animals, what traits should I look for in a cat to have the best chance at a long life?

I got a kitten that had been abandoned. He died last year, age 20. In assessing how long a cat will live, the most useful info would be how long its ancestors lived, which is most likely not going to be available in a rescue cat. My strategy would be to make sure it's presently healthy and if its breed can be ascertained, look up the longevity of the breed. Feed it a good diet, get its teeth cleaned regularly and take it for vet checkups, and also keep it indoors. The world, even in a leafy suburban neighborhood, is a dangerous place for cats. I've seen a number of neighborhood cats go missing, and I suspect somebody around here is making that happen.
