We lost Mitzi Katz (Miss Kitty to her friends) last week, kidney disease. It
was heartbreaking. We buried her next to her Otto, and I think they are together.

I'm so sorry.

She seems so pleased with her bow.

Thank you, she was a great cat, loved the guy who advocated for the bag and rocks, if you know what I mean;-).

Oh, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I am sure that Mitzi and Otto are happily romping in the Summerlands together. Purrhaps he was even waiting for her to cross over. I do so believe they will.

Very Big Hug wending it's way to you and yours. It's never easy, and that is as it should be.

Lol! and you know if you had a bigger box, the cat would shun it!

Eli will hop into the drawer if I let him. Especially if sweaters are involved. I think somewhere in the archives I have a pic of one of my former "owners" asleep in the drawer..Punkin was a tortie/tabbie MaineCoonie wanna be....so, imagine seeing nothing but a big fluffy tail protruding from the half open drawer...She was black/orange cream..lurvly cat.

I sooo need to scan some pics!

Hi folks!

First, I want to thank  MizMezcalita again for the month of TF. This is the first time I have been privileged enough to get here early. TY!!

Dijon is doing AMAZINGLY well...she has been at the vet getting daily care for 10 days now and WOW. I couldn't get there  Tuesday or Wednesday but i went yesterday and for the first time since the day the vet picked her up, i looked at her underside. it looks fantastic...i mean it still looks bad....but BUT it looks worlds better than it did.

I brought her some of her favorite foods and a brush. She is kind of a mess still and really needs a bath but it has to wait a while longer. She is sporting a cone-of-shame too, so she cant even groom herself. So i helped her out. It was probably the first time in her life she had ever been brushed and she loved it!

I also decided that when the vet lets her leave, she will just come home with me. She will need to stay in the carrier for a while anyway(it is a decent-sized carrier) so I figured I can just keep her upstairs in my room with the door closed. The 3 other cats won't be happy but they will live.

Sherpaoffered to help me learn to post pics last week....thinking I may take him up on it. Technology and I have a very rocky relationship.

Happy Caturday Everybody!!!

Does happy dance! I am so glad that she will be coming to live with you. And, by keeping her in the carrier, your other cats will eventually be able to "sniff her out" in relative safety. One thing I would suggest is that you put some scent on your hands, and then pet each and every cat that you own. And do this everyday for a week after Dijon comes home. That way your other cats will scent themselves/you/her all together. You might also allow Dijon to sleep with an article of clothing, and then you could leave it out for your other cats to have fun flemming over!

Big Hug to you, my dear. You is teh awesome!

So, after 2 weeks of lovey dovey, Eli has decided that it's bitey time again. The other day I was talking to my son in his work room, and Eli reared up and bit my calf! And this morning he scraped his fangs along my forearm..so I have a neat set of parallel tracks..13/16ths wide. Big mouth!

Coming in late to the thread, so someone may have already posted something similar to this.  As far as I'm concerned, there is no "trait" to look for.  Look at the cat, and let the cat look at you.  If there is a connection, and there is love, then that is the best trait you can hope for!  If you give the best you can to the cat, you will get the same back.  There are never any guarantees with anything.  Good luck!!!!

Oh I definitely get that.  I've sadly had a cat I took in as a stray that succumbed to feline leukemia in less than a year.  I've had two hit by cars as well many years ago.  Well three actually, but one survived after some surgery and a pin in his leg.  I know there's no guarantee, but I was just wondering if certain breeds on average live longer than others.  I'm also not at all opposed to an adult cat, though I've raised kittens before as well.  There is a local no kill animal shelter that I'll probably be looking at.  For a modest rehoming fee they come already spayed/neutered and with their shots up to date, and they require you to have the vet check for worms and such but that's very reasonably priced as well.

We found our Tilly at Greenhill Humane Society. We looked at her, she looked at us & it was love at first sight. We adopted her in May, 2002 and she was part of our family until May, 2012 when cancer took her away from us. Her age when we adopted her was estimated to be anywhere from 2-4 years old, so we never knew her true age.

I have often thought that it is not the length of time, but the quality of it. Kinda goes for hoomans and kittehs and goggies and all the other creatures in teh world. Eli was supposed to be 9 months when he came to us, but I think he was older. Just a hunch. Based on how he acts now, when he should only be 11-12 yrs old..

Hello everybodeee!

 ^-^
='.'=

nekom: Hey cat folks!  My last childhood pet I'd had since I was 12 crossed that rainbow bridge a few years ago, after nearly 20 years on this Earth.  She was a pure white cat, unknown breed from a stray litter born outside of a video store my aunt worked at at the time.  My daughter is half the age I was then, but I want her to have a similar experience.  So here's my question:  Keeping in mind that I will ONLY consider rescue/shelter animals, what traits should I look for in a cat to have the best chance at a long life?

There's no guarantee for fur people as to lifespan. All I can suggest is one who is healthy to start.
Length-of-life is no way to measure the love, joy and companionship an animal shares with you.
Kaminari was with us for only 8 years, but she still lives in our memories as one of the best.
Baby Shimrod had 6 weeks with me...but I will never forget...or regret the joy and laughter and sheer love we'd managed to cultivate in that time.
It hurts when they have to go, and you want to put that off as long as you can...but don't make that a reason NOT to adopt...that they may not live long enough to suit you. They will stay with you as long as they can, and will love and live in every minute they have with you.

I haz a sad.
I really think Bruce has crossed the Bridge.
When I left the house 6/3 Bruce was not acting right,
He was keeping to himself, and just lying in the grass by the tree line.
I left him with my husband to help give my husband a reason to carry on, and because
I felt Bruce would be happier in his own territory.
He was born under a shed near the house, and had come to me from the woods one day.
He just claimed the house as his, but only for food and shelter. He did not use a litter box.
The woods were his litter box, thank you. end of discussion.
When I left I did call my mobile vet to go out to check on Bruce. He did treat him symptomatically, gave him a shot of antibiotics and steroids and showed my husband how to do sub-Q fluids.
But my husband let Bruce go out the next day, and after taking his spot at the tree line for a while he just disappeared. He hasn't been seen again.
I am sad, but I really feel Bruce would have been miserable living indoors, or in a strange land.
Now, my gut tells me has gone to become a forever part of the land he loved. He will become one with the woods, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
/sorry for the wall of words...I have to vent this pain somewhere.

Feel free to vent away; that's what we're here for. I'm so sorry to hear about Bruce's passing, but as you said, he was most likely happier to go his own way.
///Hugs!

That's very well put.  I guess maybe I have high expectations because I was lucky enough to have my best furry friend from the tail end of my childhood well into my adult life.  She was the first of 3 cats we got, and she HATED the other two.  She was the oldest, but still managed to outlive them.  She hated my ex-wife, she hated my fiance between marriages, and she hated my second wife.  She would ONLY come to me, or my mother, that's it.  As far as she was concerned, everyone else could go DIAF.  I don't think she liked my daughter either, but she seemed to know better than to ever scratch at her, she just kept her distance.  Prissy biatch for sure.  lol, but she was always there.  19 years from a stray kitten litter born out behind a video store is not a bad run at all.

Maybe I'll just take my daughter to the shelter some day and see if any of them seem to click.

Now there's a plan that's so crazy, it just might work! :-)

3 of ours were strays that 'found' us. The 4th was a 'click' at an adoption event.

Best plan yet.

My first ever feline overlord came to me because I decided I was eventually going to get a cat. I went to the humane society to "just see what was available". This grey kitty was hiding in the back of the kennel as I was checking out all of the kitties. Next time I passed by his kennel, he was at the door. I looked at him, he stuck a paw out between the bars and meowed at me. When I took him in my hands, he rubbed his cheek on my cheek, started purring, and curled up against my chest and took a snooze. Needless to say, he was home with me that evening and was with me for almost 18 years.

Simple, normal..except when we got out of the car to get the stuff in the trunk, Eli was laying directly behind my car! As in I durn near stepped on him. I hope he just came out of the bushes and flopped down. It scares the willies out of me to think that he might have been under the car as I was driving...
