Eli is already enjoying Caturday. Why? I forgave him for biting my calf earlier this week, and if I am reading Caturday, it means he can warm my foot with his fuzzy body. ( My feet are on the hassock, Eli is platered along my left leg/foot.)..

I haz a happy!

Hey cat folks!  My last childhood pet I'd had since I was 12 crossed that rainbow bridge a few years ago, after nearly 20 years on this Earth.  She was a pure white cat, unknown breed from a stray litter born outside of a video store my aunt worked at at the time.  My daughter is half the age I was then, but I want her to have a similar experience.  So here's my question:  Keeping in mind that I will ONLY consider rescue/shelter animals, what traits should I look for in a cat to have the best chance at a long life?

hmm..good question. Part of a long life depends on genetics. Part on the environment that the cat lives in. Cats who are indoor only live longer. I would think that any cat that chooses you and your daughter, will bring such richness to your lives, you can't imagine. Whether the cat lives a short or a long life.

Coming in late to the thread, so someone may have already posted something similar to this.  As far as I'm concerned, there is no "trait" to look for.  Look at the cat, and let the cat look at you.  If there is a connection, and there is love, then that is the best trait you can hope for!  If you give the best you can to the cat, you will get the same back.  There are never any guarantees with anything.  Good luck!!!!

You really can't tell how long a specific cat will live, but you can adopt a cat that has a more developed personality (closer to 1 year of age or older) if you were looking for another trait such as a cuddler, or a lap cat.  It is probably the best idea to spend time at the cat rescue place to see which cat picks you.  Don't be afraid of picking an older cat, they need someone to love them too.   :)

We had a storm overnight and it blew a tree down across the front walk, right

No, I'm making these for a nursing home. Going to make at least four blankets before donating them.

I fell in love with Maggie when I volunteered at a shelter.  I convinced my friend to adopt her. When I went to my friend's house I would pick up and cuddle with Maggie, she wouldn't even let my friend do that.  Unfortunately we aren't friends anymore, I don't particularly care about that, but it makes me so sad that I'll never see Maggie again.

Purramedic kitteh fetched by gremlin1 on pg 1's going shortly to chorusmate Dina, who is one & is owned by at ,least 2 felines. She said what variety her owners are, but all I recall is "longhaired".

nekom: Hey cat folks!

Cats, like hoomins, unfortunately do not come with a warranty. IMO, all you can do is give them the best care possible, and cherish the time you have with them - it's always going to be shorter than we might wish for. Each day is a gift, that's why it's called the present.

Buzzbomb was the drawercat here.. none of the others seem interested.. she could pull the center drawer ( on the desk) open far enough to get in it, and then disappear.. open the bottom drawer and there she was.... if you closed all the drawers, after a few minutes the center drawer would open about halfway and she would be on her back pushing against the top drawer for leverage... she could get into just about anything.....

Sorry to worry you!  ;D  Kind of.  You are just such a special part of Caturday to me.  I think you were the first one to make me laugh out loud at a caption all those years ago.  QJ was the second!  I stopped keeping track after that.  You mentioned that all of your greenlights were Caturday ones once or twice, and I guess that was all it took for me to check every so often to see how your score was coming.

I'm sooo glad it's Caturday!  I spent most of yesterday evening checking the Greenlit section for the Caturday thread.
I was so upset that it wasn't posted by the time I went to bed just after midnight!
I even considered posting "Whar Caturday?" on TFD under an Advice tag.

I didn't realize that I had the wrong night for Caturday's green until I got out of bed this morning and read that TODAY was Thursday.

Lily is the only cat I have ever had the pleasure of sharing a home with that doesn't care for boxes.....or sacks, or anything like that! I've tried!! She is just one big NOPE! Sigh. I have to enjoy the kittehs in boxes vicariously through all the rest of you wonderful peoples! :D

Our Tilly was the same way. Boxes, paper bags & even catnip got a big old MEH from her. On the other hand she absolutely loved to chase after the laser pointer or play with a bit of string if my son or I dangled it over her.

Yay!  Happy Caturday everyone!  :)

Buddy's BFF Chi-Chi, rest his fuzzy soul, loved a good box once in a while too.
I caught him napping in this empty overturned closet box more than once, so I stuck a blankie in there for him.   It became his special cave.  He loved it.

spinachgunk.smugmug.com

Buddy has a box hidey-hole under our bed -- the wooden bed base has drawers in it and one drawer is missing.  The empty space is the perfect size for a little doggie to crawl into and gleefully lurk.  I put a blankie in there for him too.  :)

I really should get a photo of that one day, it's adorable, but it's kind of a tight space, not easy to get a wide enough camera angle.

Oh I definitely get that.  I've sadly had a cat I took in as a stray that succumbed to feline leukemia in less than a year.  I've had two hit by cars as well many years ago.  Well three actually, but one survived after some surgery and a pin in his leg.  I know there's no guarantee, but I was just wondering if certain breeds on average live longer than others.  I'm also not at all opposed to an adult cat, though I've raised kittens before as well.  There is a local no kill animal shelter that I'll probably be looking at.  For a modest rehoming fee they come already spayed/neutered and with their shots up to date, and they require you to have the vet check for worms and such but that's very reasonably priced as well.

I haz a sad.
I really think Bruce has crossed the Bridge.
When I left the house 6/3 Bruce was not acting right,
He was keeping to himself, and just lying in the grass by the tree line.
I left him with my husband to help give my husband a reason to carry on, and because
I felt Bruce would be happier in his own territory.
He was born under a shed near the house, and had come to me from the woods one day.
He just claimed the house as his, but only for food and shelter. He did not use a litter box.
The woods were his litter box, thank you. end of discussion.
When I left I did call my mobile vet to go out to check on Bruce. He did treat him symptomatically, gave him a shot of antibiotics and steroids and showed my husband how to do sub-Q fluids.
But my husband let Bruce go out the next day, and after taking his spot at the tree line for a while he just disappeared. He hasn't been seen again.
I am sad, but I really feel Bruce would have been miserable living indoors, or in a strange land.
Now, my gut tells me has gone to become a forever part of the land he loved. He will become one with the woods, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
/sorry for the wall of words...I have to vent this pain somewhere.

I am so sorry honey. You did the right thing. Leaving Bruce in his territory was very kind. Perhaps he simply faded into the wood, because he could not bear to say goodbye. Only Fare thee Well, with a flick of the tail, a glance over the shoulder, and into the forest he fades.

FangQ all for good pix & lines overnight, too numerous to cite.   This the double-kitteh stamp for Messages 2 Other Members within Care2Causes, way  too wee to catption. Embiggened a bit, which does wreck focus.
Best wishes to Sugarbear & Coelacanth for the imminent surgery.  Mtn View sent me a receipt for my trifle which they needed not. $.46 more that coulda gone to the project fund.  Worked long enough for non-profits that I count/squeeze every cent until they all  cry for mercy.
Also good on sherpa18's who I never spell out entirely 100th greenlight here. Conga-cats!!!  May be able to do something, trifle belately, for garlic wings Dragon so furrvently desires.  Esp if they come in Light (fooey!) & if a nearby place can be found to deliver.
Peanuts  strip doing the camp rerun, with Linus fearing to be bit by Queen Snake (sorry BBBB).
Also an excellent witty interview with Jeremy Dubin playing Sherlock Holmes, of Noshiatsherlock Inst fame, in Cinti Shakespeare Th's Hound of the Baskervilles which we saw last year.  Pl & I are both Sherlockians as well as everything else we do, just not as active as once.  Line about being everywhere doing everything, all simultaneously.

That's so funny! (I think he likes you!) :D What did you name him???

I haven't named him. It seems kind of futile.
I call him "Kitty Kitty" as in "Here Kitty kitty kitty kitty".

I haven't seen him since the tree folks were here to cut up the fallen limbs & stuff.
I think the chainsaw freaked him out.

He'll be back. You should name him Kodachrome or Tri Pan or even Pixel. ;-)

Hi folks!

First, I want to thank  MizMezcalita again for the month of TF. This is the first time I have been privileged enough to get here early. TY!!

Dijon is doing AMAZINGLY well...she has been at the vet getting daily care for 10 days now and WOW. I couldn't get there  Tuesday or Wednesday but i went yesterday and for the first time since the day the vet picked her up, i looked at her underside. it looks fantastic...i mean it still looks bad....but BUT it looks worlds better than it did.

I brought her some of her favorite foods and a brush. She is kind of a mess still and really needs a bath but it has to wait a while longer. She is sporting a cone-of-shame too, so she cant even groom herself. So i helped her out. It was probably the first time in her life she had ever been brushed and she loved it!

I also decided that when the vet lets her leave, she will just come home with me. She will need to stay in the carrier for a while anyway(it is a decent-sized carrier) so I figured I can just keep her upstairs in my room with the door closed. The 3 other cats won't be happy but they will live.

Sherpaoffered to help me learn to post pics last week....thinking I may take him up on it. Technology and I have a very rocky relationship.

Happy Caturday Everybody!!!

Does happy dance! I am so glad that she will be coming to live with you. And, by keeping her in the carrier, your other cats will eventually be able to "sniff her out" in relative safety. One thing I would suggest is that you put some scent on your hands, and then pet each and every cat that you own. And do this everyday for a week after Dijon comes home. That way your other cats will scent themselves/you/her all together. You might also allow Dijon to sleep with an article of clothing, and then you could leave it out for your other cats to have fun flemming over!

Big Hug to you, my dear. You is teh awesome!

We found our Tilly at Greenhill Humane Society. We looked at her, she looked at us & it was love at first sight. We adopted her in May, 2002 and she was part of our family until May, 2012 when cancer took her away from us. Her age when we adopted her was estimated to be anywhere from 2-4 years old, so we never knew her true age.

I have often thought that it is not the length of time, but the quality of it. Kinda goes for hoomans and kittehs and goggies and all the other creatures in teh world. Eli was supposed to be 9 months when he came to us, but I think he was older. Just a hunch. Based on how he acts now, when he should only be 11-12 yrs old..

Hello everybodeee!

 ^-^
='.'=

nekom: Hey cat folks!

There's no guarantee for fur people as to lifespan. All I can suggest is one who is healthy to start.
Length-of-life is no way to measure the love, joy and companionship an animal shares with you.
Kaminari was with us for only 8 years, but she still lives in our memories as one of the best.
Baby Shimrod had 6 weeks with me...but I will never forget...or regret the joy and laughter and sheer love we'd managed to cultivate in that time.
It hurts when they have to go, and you want to put that off as long as you can...but don't make that a reason NOT to adopt...that they may not live long enough to suit you. They will stay with you as long as they can, and will love and live in every minute they have with you.

valnt9: [i265.photobucket.com image 800x600]

Feel free to vent away; that's what we're here for. I'm so sorry to hear about Bruce's passing, but as you said, he was most likely happier to go his own way.
///Hugs!

syzygy whizz:

That's very well put.  I guess maybe I have high expectations because I was lucky enough to have my best furry friend from the tail end of my childhood well into my adult life.  She was the first of 3 cats we got, and she HATED the other two.  She was the oldest, but still managed to outlive them.  She hated my ex-wife, she hated my fiance between marriages, and she hated my second wife.  She would ONLY come to me, or my mother, that's it.  As far as she was concerned, everyone else could go DIAF.  I don't think she liked my daughter either, but she seemed to know better than to ever scratch at her, she just kept her distance.  Prissy biatch for sure.  lol, but she was always there.  19 years from a stray kitten litter born out behind a video store is not a bad run at all.

Maybe I'll just take my daughter to the shelter some day and see if any of them seem to click.

Now there's a plan that's so crazy, it just might work! :-)

3 of ours were strays that 'found' us. The 4th was a 'click' at an adoption event.

My first ever feline overlord came to me because I decided I was eventually going to get a cat. I went to the humane society to "just see what was available". This grey kitty was hiding in the back of the kennel as I was checking out all of the kitties. Next time I passed by his kennel, he was at the door. I looked at him, he stuck a paw out between the bars and meowed at me. When I took him in my hands, he rubbed his cheek on my cheek, started purring, and curled up against my chest and took a snooze. Needless to say, he was home with me that evening and was with me for almost 18 years.

Gah! Eli is out to give me a heart attack...Son and I came home from the pool, so he can get ready for a party this afternoon. Simple, normal..except when we got out of the car to get the stuff in the trunk, Eli was laying directly behind my car! As in I durn near stepped on him. I hope he just came out of the bushes and flopped down. It scares the willies out of me to think that he might have been under the car as I was driving...

My son and I just got back from two Humane Societies in the area. One was having a tent sale (I only got a dozen older cookbooks) and the second one was on the way home. He started playing with one of the cats under the door, they let him in to play with the 2.5 year old male cat and for a while I thought we would be getting a third cat. It took a couple of hours but the cat decided to go to sleep (in his arms) and he put the poor thing down on his bed and we left. Someday I want to have as many cats as I can give time to and love. Right now with our two elderly cats, it is just the two.

It is always painful to lose a friend.. animals know when it's time to go.. Catastrophe curled up in her spot under the table, in her normal position.. I went out to get breakfast.. she was gone when I got back... didn't know it for hours....  and MissChif had her heart attack during the night.. made it back to her spot on the bed before she crossed.... still pains me to think about it, but looking at the pictures and remembering them as they were helps a lot... we are here to help, and we share your grief.....

Awesome news - and good to hear that she will go straight to your her new home! And please, do not hesitate to drop me an email - my login at gmail dot com, I would be more than happy to host/post pics for you until you get the hang of it - I can't be the only one here who really wants to see pics of Dijon!

canavar: Hi folks!

So glad Dijon is doing well... thank you for caring and doing what needed to be done..  Sherpa can definitely help you on the posting issue.. he,s good.... and I got dibs on next month's TF...

syzygy whizz: Hello everybodeee!

 ^-^
='.'=

nekom: Hey cat folks!

They will stay with you as long as they can, and will love and live in every minute they have with you.

catmandu: nekom:

Maybe I'll just take my daughter to the shelter some day and see if any of them seem to click.

Best plan yet.

Biscuit's hair is too much like cotton candy. Wolf has a really heavy coat that can be shaped better.
Although, she didn't taper the mane as well as she usually does for either of them. They both look like floating heads.

On shelter cats:

Our last three have been from shelters. The dear departed Thora was my first shelter, she picked me out. I was in the shelter for the second time to look at another cat, Thora reached out and grabbed my shirt with her claws as I went past and started purring as she grabbed me. I felt really guilty that night and went back to sign the papers. The second shelter (Panther) was when my kid was 4 and thought he wanted a dog but was highly allergic. Every month I would take him through the humane society to see how the allergies were. This time he saw a kitten and the two of them bonded immediately. For over two hours they would both hiss at anyone trying to separate them. So the wife was called, she tried for over an hour and gave up. Our third shelter (Gideon, shown in a picture above) was there with a note that he was "unsociable". Poor gid looked at me and started screaming. We "held"a conversation to the amusement of the staff. The poor cat was miserable in the booth. They let me in with a brush to try and get some burrs out warning me that I would be severely clawed. To everyone's amazement Gideon let me not only brush him, but also cut out really bad burrs. All fees were waived if I took him. So I did. As it turns out, someone really abused the poor thing and it did take a couple of months until he "joined" the family and other cat.
