How Why did they make such a big footprint so cramped inside?

2013-06-13 05:53:13 PM
That's the lamest galley on a £15 million yacht I've seen.

...would fit as comfortably in outer space...
...the 42.5metre-long Adastra...

I see what you did there, yacht people.

The boat's designer's sons are named Sky and Orion...  Gotta wonder if he had a hand in naming the yacht as well.

Sliding Carp: How Why did they make such a big footprint so cramped inside?

It's not that big a footprint if you consider the two pontoons are wasted space.  All that tapering looks cool, but limits your usable space.

If I was spending $15 million on a yacht, I'd want a smaller Titanic recreation.  Slow, boxy, and plenty of room.

2013-06-13 09:25:06 PM
It has a dining area with panoramic views, fully functional kitchen and bathroom

Is it programmed in multiple techniques?

What would a partially functional kitchen or bathroom look like?

Looks like a yacht of a Bond villain.

2013-06-13 09:26:01 PM
It's not the £15 million that gets you.. it's the £150 million you need to spend on the secret lair inside of a volcano to park it in.

It also looks positively deadly in a storm. Way too many sharp corners.

I think if I was a billionaire and was purchasing a luxury good, I'd spend the money to not have the Chinese build it.
What an odd choice.

2013-06-13 09:30:57 PM
Give me one of the luxury subs instead. Probably about the same amount of usable space

Some of the design sketches are reminiscent of the Serenity.

And then I started looking at it more closely. Yea... no. But thanks.

How do you think the rich get richer*? Finding ways to do things with less money.

Shouldn't that be where the fuel tanks are? Sort of like modern commercial planes....

Not look like, but function.  Probably one where fresh water was limited, and toilet flushing consists of droping waste into a hold tank (similar to an RV).  Since this is in open water, waste is probably flushed directly into the sea, and I'd bet there is a desalination box onboard (for unlimited fresh water).

The giant Adastra is a three-hulled made-to-order yacht that cost $15million to make

So it cost $15M to make and cost (pound symbol)15M to buy?  Or something?  Some more hard-hitting journalism from the Daily Fail.

2013-06-13 09:44:49 PM
Came here to pretty much say the same thing everyone else said.  What a crappy boat for that amount of money.  But it looks like it's real purpose is about the same as a concept car.  Not really designed to be practical.

2013-06-13 09:45:18 PM
While it looks completely awesome from the outside, I'm sure you can get something much more spacious and accommodating for that much money.

If you look at the land pics you'll see thrusters for turning on a dime. Not wasted space.

So I can hack/steal this guy's boat from 50m away with an iPad? Sounds good to me.

The password is probably Adastra123.

Seriously though that boat is garbage for $15m.

I never saw the point of buying a personal boat that you can't sail by yourself.

/Yea, yea, rich businessmen have to be able to entertain guests.

Pfft! That doesn't even make it into the top 100 super yachts at 43 meters. The smallest on the top 100 list is a hair over 76 meters. Looks like someone isn't as rich as they pretend to be.

No, you need a holding tank. If you pull into port and the USCG does an inspection, they check for that. If they see your head is rigged to flush waste overboard, that's a ginormous fine (well, for the average person. The owner of this thing wouldn't even notice).

If I were to spend £15 million on a yacht for some reason, I'd create a giant floating temple that looked like a lingam. It would be something both useful and a form of trolling. If you're going to have an expensive dick boat, you might as well be honest about it.

I agree. If I were going to spend that kind of money, I'd also want lots of nice wood paneling on the interior walls. The rooms shown look more like a Japanese hotel than a yacht. (Or at least my idea of what a yacht should look like.)

What's up with the renderings of the interior though?

I don't see any thrusters - I just see two 100hp engines - one on each pontoon. It's far from clear what they are for. It doesn't seem to have bow thrusters, either.
Despite the shape, this isn't a fast boat - they were talking about a 17kt cruising speed.
The range isn't that great, either: certainly not transatlantic. The distance between NY and London isn't the only factor used in calculating range.
As for the hull shape, it's a great way of limiting space without any apparent advantage.

Pretty lousy craft, I'm afraid.
