(Detroit Free Press)   "How cool would it be to have your car automatically call Dunkin' Donuts when you're a mile away so your coffee and cruller are ready and paid for when you pull up?" In other news, GM's CEO likes Dunkin' Donuts   (freep.com) divider line 23

But on the negative side, It would keep cops on the road more than they currently are.

Too bad it's Dunkin Donuts. Some MBA fools from Bain Capital came in and crapped on everything.

So your cruller is sitting on the counter in the open air and your coffee is cooled off when you get it? Don't get me wrong it's cool and all but coffee and a doughnut doesn't take long to prepare. I'm pretty sure most DD workers can fill a cup and grab a doughnut faster than you can drive between the speaker and the window if there is even one other car there.

Considering the nearest DD is like, 1500 miles away, I don't think I care all that much

It's not the time it takes me to pay for my coffee that bugs me. It's the time it takes for you to pay for your coffee. Especially if there are a lot of you.

I think it would be completely UNCOOL to design a feature into any car that encourages unhealthy consumerism.  Because that's what we need more of in America, a car that automatically orders donuts for your huge, fat, American ass.

But here's the important question: Will they give you a receipt?

If there's one thing about Dunkin Donuts, it's that the cashiers are pretty farking fast about processing the whole transaction. It's just coffee and danish, nothing complicated. Hell, I went to the Dunkin Donuts in Berlin, and despite my horrible German speaking, the whole order went pretty fast. I don't need an app to place an order, ordering is very straightforward.

It's still a moot point, since they changed to the new cooking oil, their donuts taste like greasy sewage.

By far the most annoying part of driving to the donut shop in the morning is the driving.  The 45 seconds spent actually completing the transaction pales in comparison to the 20 minutes wasted driving out of your way, parking, walking into the store, waiting in line, etc.

When you come up with an app for your car that makes the car itself obsolete, then maybe I'll give a shiat.

farking this.

Well, since I'm just getting coffee that most likely wasn't created using cooking oil, then it's not a moot point. Actually I think the reason Krispy Kreme was initially popular in Massachusetts is because the donuts were just way better than DD's. I don't think there's many who would brag that Dunkin makes the best donuts. It's all about the coffee.

Yeah, their donuts have historically been dry and tasteless.  Their coffee, for whatever reason, is pretty damn good.

He's calling for developers to do that.  He just wants to provide the potential.  I'm just not really sure what kind of apps I need in my car.  GPS would be nice, but my phone already does that.  Perhaps an app warning me of speed traps or DUI check points - those have already been made although probably not available at the Apple store and may have even been pulled from Google Play.  (I'm not worried enough about either to use them).

Streaming movies for the kids in the back seat would be a good to have, but I'd rather just get them a tablet.  What seems to be lacking is just an easy way to plug tablets and phones into the cars systems.

I suppose automatically programming in an order ahead of time would be good.  I sometimes run errands and pick up food from a local Chinese restaurant on the way.  I know about what time to call them so my order is ready (or almost ready) when I arrive there.  It's easy enough just to call them though and that way I have confirmation and I will know if it's going to be 10 minutes (as usual) or if for some reason it will take longer and since they're a small independent restaurant that doesn't even deliver I seriously doubt they'll be rushing to get into this market.  They keep pretty busy with sit-down and take-out orders.

GM is just looking for another revenue stream, but I'd really wish they'd just stick to making cars.

I won't be willing to use this until it can automatically insult the cashier for eight minutes, with the touch of a button.

I worked at DD and I could do that entire transaction in about 40 seconds if you're dumb ass doesn't freeze up picking a doughnut.

So instead of building basically an unlocked smartphone into the car they are tethering it to AT&T.  Lots of rural folks drive domestics dontcha know.

40 seconds?  Slacker.

So we're going to make smartphones the size of cars and distracted driving harder to detect.

Amen.  And please make that standard across makes and models, then you've really got something.

I now choose rental cars just based on how easy it's going to be to hook up my tech stuff and that's depressing since I'm depriving myself of driving some cool new cars that are stuck in the digital stone ages.
