You can do that? Why the hell wouldn't you? Hard to grab a facemask you can't get you fingers in.

My first thought as well.  Plus it looks pretty cool with the oakley mirror lens thing.

If you played for the Arizona Cardinals, you'd want to cover your face, too.

Although, I wonder if this is going to be a short-lived fad like those thick facemasks in the early 90s.

The NFL refuses to standardize helmets because they don't want to be held liable for lawsuits stemming from player brains turning into mush from multiple concussions.  I'm actually surprised these didn't take off sooner.

Justin Tuck started the trend a few years ago. Giants equipment director Joe Skiba won a award for his mask designs.

I doubt it since these face mask actually prevent something that most players are looking to prevent from happening to them.

He'd have to put one on willingly for that.  "Uh... no, I'm not going to use it because it obstructs my view.  What's that, why have I taken off the bar in the middle?  Ummm... so that my mouth is...  errrr....  free...  free to pray! Yes, pray."

I'm getting a kick out of this because I went to high school with the guy.

BTW, he's a same guy who, over twitter, asked out AJ McCarron's girlfriend (remember her?) to an evening of chicken wings and a trip to the strip club a few months ago.

Ray Lewis looked like a black 'Shredder' from TMNT. Tuck looks like Optimus Prime.

That Chargers lineman looks like he should be fencing.

Serious question... why haven't they just gone with a solid sheet of clear plastic with a visor slit and breathing holes drilled in it?  Sure, it gets scratched up, but the NFL has enough cash to just slap a new one on every game.

The excuses I hear from hockey players from not wearing masks like that is that the visor impedes their vision, gets fogged up, and any sort of breathing holes don't do an effective job with allowing you to breathe.

/Personally, I wear a cage when I play hockey
//never played football

Hockey and football are a little different though.

In hockey, you're skating around on ice. So the temperature of the room is going to be a lot lower. Therefore, your breath will likely cause condensation on the mask due to the dew point of your breath hitting the cold air.

Second, in hockey, you're trying to track a 3-inch black puck whizzing around at insane speeds. In football, if you are an offensive lineman, you just need to see 300lb guys moving at 10-15mph.

Breathing part....yeah, I could see that though.

Fair enough.  All stuff I hadn't really thought about because I've never played tackle football.

At that point, why not just go to full-face plexiglass or something like that?

...or my question could just get done being answered right above me.

Why would you WANT to go to full-face plexiglass? That doesn't look cool.

Football does get played in rain (which would be really f*cking annoying unless maybe there are wipers, which would break immediately) and sub-freezing temperatures as well.

I think the main reason why they will never go with a full plexiglass face mask is the risk of it breaking and sending a sharp piece of plastic into the person's face. Face mask do break, especially with linemen, and the cages are designed not to collapse back into the persons face.

Plus if you get any type of oily substance on it you won't be able to properly clean it until you are of the field and that would severely fark up your vision. One of my friends that plays hockey gave this as a reason why he wears a cage.
