This is why building the Keystone pipeline is so important.

lets make sure to build us one of these in our primary growing areas, and on top of the continents main aquifer

An old friend of mine had a cat named Alberta growing up. Now I'm envisioning her splashing about in toxic waste and growing an extra tail or three.

The cat, not my friend.

There's probably wooly mammoths and saber-tooth tigers running around in Northern Alberta for all we know. It's not like actual humans exist north of Edmonton.

/the 'tar sands' don't actually exist
//you heard it here first

How the hell does this get greenlit? It's Blogspam for starters. Then you click the link at the blog only to find a sensational article and find out it's 42 hectares or 100 acres which is hardly a "vast expanse." A typical shopping mall or subdivision is 100 acres. And then it's mostly salt water with perhaps 2000 liters of petroluem? Fark? Yeah more like What the fark.

Here's a link to a real source:

I agree that linking to news aggregates is stupid.
That "real source" seems to be painting the same picture of it being a pretty big deal, though.

According to wikipedia, what one hectare may look like:

This is one of the comments on the article, so take it with a pile of salt:

" *edit* I think, I'm not sure, but I feel like I've read that somewhere.... but you're not currently allowed to take photos of the oil sands as it is, so I doubt they'll be allowed to go in now. "

It's 500 miles from the middle of nowhere, er, Edmonton and it's a company town. Furthermore, look at google maps, that area is already an etch-a-sketch of industrial development. Not saying this spill is justified in any way, but the sensationalist bullsh*t is what fuels the fires of conservative backlash.

There was also a small spill in BC on the Trans Mountain pipeline this morning.

Ivo Shandor: There was also a small spill in BC on the Trans Mountain pipeline this morning.

Kinder-Morgan confirms that there was a spill.  A tiny spill.  So small that it's barely worth discussing.  No harm has come to the environment or to any people.

I trust Kinder-Morgan with all my heart.  They would never lie or distort or compromise safety in the name of profits!

Neither Apache nor Alberta initially disclosed the spill, which was only made public after someone reported it to a TV station late last week. The National Energy Board, by comparison, sent out a news release Tuesday after a spill of five to seven barrels of oil at an Imperial Oil Ltd. refinery in Sarnia, Ont.

Too late:  Rule 34 applies.

And, due to quantum pornographic entanglement, mutant furry porn websites are already up and running.

"Salt water with a dash of oil" is a bit disingenous...can I pump uranium slurry that's salty enough to kill trees into YOUR watershed, so long as I keep the oil ppm low?

Oh the prairie lights are burnin' bright
The Chinook wind is a-movin' in
Tomorrow night I'll be Alberta bound
Though I've done the best I could
My old luck ain't been so good and
Tomorrow night I'll be Alberta bound
No one I've met could e'er forget
The Rocky Mountain sunset
It's a pleasure just to be Alberta bound
I long to see my next of kin
To know what kind of shape they're in
Tomorrow night I'll be Alberta bound
Alberta bound, Alberta bound
It's good to be Alberta bound
Alberta bound, Alberta bound
It's good to be Alberta bound

Oh the skyline of Toronto
Is somethin' you'll get onto
But they say you've got to live there for a while
And if you got the money
You can get yourself a honey
A written guarantee ta make you smile
But it's snowin' in the city
And the streets and brown and gritty
And I know there's pretty girls all over town
But they never seem to find me
And the one I left behind me
Is the reason that I'll be Alberta bound

Alberta bound, Alberta bound
It's good to be Alberta bound
Alberta bound, Alberta bound
It's good to be Alberta bound
It's good to be Alberta bound

Alberta song thread!

I  am a workin' man
But I ain't worked for a while
Like some old tin can
From the bottom of the pile

I have lost my way
But I hear tell
About a heaven in Alberta
Where they've got all hell for a basement

My words are like a rope
That's wrapped around my throat
Wash my mouth with soap
For words unfit to quote

I have lost my way
But I hear tell
About a heaven in Alberta
Where they've got all hell for a basement

I have lost my way
But I hear tell
About a heaven in Alberta
Where they've got all hell for a basement

And now I'm free to go
But time cannot remove
The only life I know
Now only time will prove
Yes only time will prove

If I have lost my way
'Cause I hear tell
About a heaven in Alberta
Where they've got all hell for a basement

Yeah, I lost my way
But I hear tell
About a heaven in Alberta
Where they've got all hell for a basement

Eh, I'll wait for the TSB report before making stupid statements about the Keystone pipeline.

I consider myself left wing but the false comparisons just annoy me.
