Whenever life gets you down, Mrs.Brown
And things seem hard or tough
And people are stupid, obnoxious or daft
And you feel that you've had quite enough

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour
That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned
A sun that is the source of all our power

The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour
Of the galaxy we call the 'milky way'

Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars
It's a hundred thousand light years side to side
It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick
But out by us, it's just three thousand light years wide

We're thirty thousand light years from galactic central point
We go 'round every two hundred million years
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe

The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whizz
As fast as it can go, the speed of light, you know
Twelve million miles a minute and that's the fastest speed there is

So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure
How amazingly unlikely is your birth
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth

Can this be the official (Featured Partner) link discussion thread then?  I don't see what the big deal is some of them are entertaining some of them are not.  They are not significantly better or worse  than any other greenlit article.  Why can't we have comments in the featured partner threads?

Years of experience has shown Drew that if something is sponsored, or a partner, it gets seriously hammered in the comments. I mean, FarkTV was shiat, but wow, the comments. Those threads were brilliant just for the comments. I looked forward to new FarkTV stuff because the comments here put Mr. Vitriol, on a vitriolic day, to shame.

Because dear Drew don't want Feature Partners to be pissed off.

(and you know we would piss them off)

I read on teh internets once that the Andromeda galaxy will collide with our Milky Way before our sun burns out. When we do collide, the chances are almost non-existent that any object in either galaxy will even touch. I thought that was a decent perspective in terms of vastness.

One large heap of THIS.

I never click the sponsored links for the sole reason that they don't have a thread. What's the point of reading TFA if you can't come back and discuss it? This is also why I miss the long departed Boobies links. It's not for the flesh, that's easy enough to find. The threads were priceless. Now all that's left is the Studman69 picture.

I really don't understand people who measure their self-worth or derive their self esteem or confidence from their relative scale to the universe.

Yes, it's huge, farking huge, i'm small, but you're weird if that fact lessens your opinion of yourself.

The universe will burn itself out and become an endless see of darkness with no light or heat, and no one will ever come by to measure our achievements, or read your A* book report, but that doesn't mean you should give up, or that you don't matter. You matter to someone... You matter to me.

Oh sorry, not you, that was meant for someone else, I didn't think you'd come into this thread and read that. Sorry.

They're not departed - they've moved to foobies.com to prevent career-ending misclicks on a tab that's active, but hasn't rendered yet.

Two things to make you feel less tiny:

1.) Every single atom of every element beyond hydrogen that makes up your body was forged in the infernos of dying stars over the course of billions of years. The hydrogen itself (and all of the particles that make up those atoms that are you) condensed in the afterglow of the big bang.

2.) As you are made of of the particles of the universe following the laws of physics of the universe to self-organize into a conscious being in the universe thinking about the mind-boggling size of the universe, you are literally (a little bit of) the universe thinking about itself.

So, don't feel too inadequate. ;)

Yet if you compare any of us to the scale on which life actually mechanically operates, you realize that we are actually mind-numbingly gigantic.

Each of us is a vast civilization of trillions of living creatures cooperating to build our physical being.

One more bit to make things seem even smaller. The difference between the size of the observable universe and the theoretical possible size of the entire universe is roughly the same as the difference in size between a human and the observable universe, presuming the universe is not in fact infinite.
