A game like this last night and all Sportcenter could talk about this morning was Tim Tebow and a game from the overactive pituitary league from 2 nights ago.

/sigh

I don't believe that for a second.  I'm sure they spent some time talking about LeBron.

Hmmm maybe because the NBA Finals gets 3x's the viewers and the NFL gets about 5x's the viewers?

The big question is that why is espn making such a big deal that the patroits signed a 3rd string quarterback?

Last night's game fared pretty well.

NBC's 4.8 ovrnight for Bruins-BHawks Gm1 topped BelmontStakes (4.6), even w/ Heat-Bucks Gm4 on ABC, just below ABC's Pacers-Knicks Gm1 (4.9)

You're comparing a finals to a playoff game.

NHL earlier rounds playoffs were just getting over 1 million viewers.

NBA Finals are getting over 12 million viewers

I'm a Pats fan and even I don't care about the Tebow signing. Hell, we're not even close to watching preseason NFL games. That hockey game last night was awesome, which makes me disappointed that the NHL isn't a bigger draw on TV, due to the stupidity of the league.

If these games are gonna be overtime battles, they should start the games at 6:30pm.

Heavens to mergatroid.   An f-bomb.  Clearly we need to gasp and point over a word that is pretty much part of every day conversation for the vast majority of Americans.

Good game though, Bruins had far more than their fair share of chances to finish this one earlier, and simply botched every one of them.

The Stanley Cup finals, featuring teams from two of the largest markets in the country, was able to keep up with low-round NBA action from smaller markets in the bad conference.

I'm pretty sure you're allowed to swear on TV that late at night/early in the morning.

/How did the ratings fare against "Ronco: After Dark"?

Pierre McGuire face is NSFW.

He is in fact a penis with glasses.

I was hoping the two at the end were going at in a different way.

2013-06-13 12:49:00 PM
Ratings schmatings...just because bad tv programs and some poverty-ass sport that is accessible to anyone with a playground near by and an inflatable ball can out draw a hockey game means nothing.

Insane game last night by both teams. That's all that matters.

I want some hockey player to end an interview with him with a "Haha! Your name is slang for penis!"

Shaw sounded like he wanted to last night, but thought better of it.

I would hope that as NBC continues to deliver solid broadcasting for the NHL, their ratings will tick upwards.  The league needs to do something with their stars, though - they need someone they can market.  Ovetchkin isn't going to do it and Crosby is a glass cannon.

/Also, how was Jagr awake during that overtime?  Is he going to have to skip the country buffet this afternoon?

Because ESPN pays a bazillion dollars a year to broadcast the NFL and they take every opportunity to try and whip up interest in the sports they have invested in broadcast rights?

Toews would be a great candidate if he had any personality on camera. Kane wouldn't be bad either, now that he has grown up a little.

Not really, the 2012 NBA finals were the highest in 2004, where as the 2012 NHL Finals was the lowest since 2007.

The NHL has a better matchup this year, so their ratings are up some (#7 and #3 media markets in the country), the NBA has a team from a pretty small city (#16 & #37 media markets) so their ratings are a bit lower.  Plus for years hearing the Spurs are boring (despite the fact they play the best brand of ball in the NBA) I guess the casual view isn't tuning in as much this year...

but still way way higher than the NHL

Once Chicago stopped trying to be the Bruins and laying down hits and started being the godamn Blackhawks and clogging the neutral and picking off passes I knew it was going the Hawks way. Of course it was a great game, and a testament to how evenly matched these guys are.

This is going to be one hell of a series

I'm a little disappointed the game didn't go a few minutes longer.

Not because I wanted it to be the longest finals game in history, but because I was starting to be amused by the constant mentions after 12 EDT that "It's tomorrow in Boston" and I was looking forward to 10 minutes of "It's tomorrow here in Chicago too".

Every time he'd mention it, we'd comment on what time it was in some other part of the world.

"It's breakfast time in London!"
"Hawaiians are just getting down to dinner!"
"It's lunch time in Tokyo!"
"It's 5 O'clock somewhere, have another drink"

Also, y'know, 3 OT - people like me who don't really give a sh*t tend to pop in for some OT.

It's 23 degrees.  And the building is 63 but goes up 5 degrees almost immediately as the crowd starts pouring in.  Boston's alternative to the national crew is local broadcasts from Jack Edwards.  I'll take the national guys and just pretend they're using the right names.

Well that's what happens when you put the majority of finals games on basic TV instead of pay-cable.

Boston has now received its memo: unlike the Penguins, you can shut down the Hawks top two lines and still get outscored. This ain't no pansy east conference pretender, these are the effin' Blackhawks baby.

2013-06-14 09:14:10 AM
just watched the interview on my dvr... both the direct tv subtitles and the closed captioning said "great puck"....

2013-06-14 01:41:33 PM
Hey we all watched it and it was an awesome game. Who cares that more people watched the NBA, their loss (or they don't care about hockey, either way big whoop).

NHL viability has come a long way since the nadir a few years ago with all the lockouts. Hope it can maintain, even this year almost didn't happen.

WhiskeySticks: some poverty-ass sport that is accessible to anyone with a playground near by and an inflatable ball can out draw a hockey game means nothing.

Referring to basketball derisively as a 'poverty sport' while seemingly implying the (true) notion that you need means to play hockey (and favorable geography) isn't about to gain a whole lot of young players, nice strategy there. Both sports are enjoyable, relax about it.
