If it comes onto my private property I'll do as I damn well please to it, and if you decide to sue or press charges, that's a two way street.  Invasion of privacy, criminal trespass, disturbing the peace, harassment, etc.

However, as a geeky type, my solution to this is much more... eloquent.  I have a lot of RC gear.  I also have an unlocked RF band transceiver connected to a laptop.  I can scan, find and jam your control frequency.  (yes, even the hoppers)  Meanwhile, while you can't control it, your drone is going to have an accident with my drone, which just happens to be made entirely of aluminum and aimed directly at your floating photography platform.

The law hasn't been decided just yet, but it's entirely likely that trespass will be applied to the operator of the drone.  We'll see.

/I fly, drive, etc a lot of RC vehicles, including some drones.
//never ever on private property without permission

I'm sure I'm not the first to point this out, but all you have to do is jam the radio signals around your house.  A cell phone jammer might work

akula: noitsnot: You can get rubber shot that should be just the ticket.  Just break the props and bye bye.

Or - Anything that can throw a loop of string or wire across it would foul the props.

Heck, even a snakeshot load out of something like a .38spl would be sufficient. But again, if the trajectory would have pellets leaving your own yard I'd recommend against it. Wire or some kind of net, though, that would be quite effective. I have a travel laundry sack that is plastic mesh; it would jam those props solid. Then I can introduce it to Mr. Sledgehammer.

I was thinking, what about a paintball gun that fired ice? Not sure how possible that would be, but the evidence would melt pretty quickly.

If it's flying at window height, just throw a handful of gravel up.  Those little plastic blades will bust up or it will lose enough control that it will come down.  No need to shoot it down with a shotgun.  Grab your kiddo's nerf football.  If you still feel the urge to be all ITG take it to a controled range where it doesn't matter if you want to pump deer slugs into the thing.

No need to get all ITG on this. A lightweight net with some fishing weights on the corners would do the trick. Just throw it at the offending 'copter and it will tangle up the blades, taking it out cleanly without damaging it (much - most 'copters of this type have folding blades.)

Want something to take one down at some distance? Maybe use one of these.

Now, as far as I'm concerned, if the thing lands on my property it's mine. I could be nice about it and let you have it back if you weren't / aren't being a dick about it, but if you go there... *you* explain to the nice sheriff what you were doing with said camera drone. Yeah, go ahead, I'll wait.

What's with all this ITG talk in here?  There are simpler solutions to this mess.

If anyone peeps in my windows with a spy drone, they're going to see a pasty white nerd doing such horrifying things with oatmeal, lube, animal crackers and a life sized cardboard cutout of George C. Scott that they'll never want to look in anyone's windows again.

remus: akula: While I'd love to use my skeet skills on one of those (if I had such a douchey neighbor), in an actual neighborhood that's not really responsible.

I do wonder if that wasp spray that shoots 25' or so would fark up one of those things. A garden hose very likely would.

I'm wondering if some rock salt instead of buck shot might do the trick?

Could be, but I was even thinking something like #9 bird shot. Over 20-30 yards it would definitely have enough punch to rip one of those to shreds. Still, the noise and potential landing area of the shot is not under my control, which is enough for me to not want to do it. A garden hose, on the other hand, would likely be effective at downing the thing. Depending on how close it is my pressure washer might well cut the thing in half.

If you have control over the property you're surveilling, you're fine. Nobody's talking about such measures taken against drones that remain over your own property. When you're hovering around somebody else's property without authorization you deserve what you receive.

Do you intend to always sit in your house with the curtains closed? Even if you, theoretically, have a large enough yard that you wouldn't normally need to worry about people looking in?

DroneShield. Hopefully DroneShield 2.0 will combine detection with some kind of surface-to-air missile.

...ask him to not fly his drone near our home. The man insisted that it is legal for him to fly an aerial drone over our yard and adjacent to our windows. He noted that the drone has a camera, which transmits images he viewed through a set of glasses. He purported to be doing "research". We are extremely concerned, as he could very easily be a criminal who plans to break into our house or a peeping-tom."

Not to sound internet tough-guy but if it were my house the guy would be pulling that drone out of his arse.

I am not a lawyer but I am pretty sure I read somewhere that he actually does not have the right to fly the drone over someone's property if the flight path is below the height of the highest part of a person's house.

Or use an airsoft/bb gun to destroy one or more of the rotors and capture the enemy aircraft; or a pool skimmer if its close enough.

This. I'd love a nice flying target for my airsoft gun.

If you live in the country, a shotgun would be even more entertaining.

take it in the house, sell it on ebay
if he shows up, shoot him or have him arrested for stalking
tell the police that he was taking pictures of your naked kids

in the very least, before returning it to him, break all the parts into little tiny pieces with a hammer
