(some soosh)   So here's something that probably didn't happen in your neighborhood. Not a big deal, just a bear eating a chicken out on a deck in the sunshine. LGT bear, and I'll post it in the thread (Image may be graphic to some)   (sacredartichoke.com) divider line 78

Why are there wild chickens just running around a suburbian neighborhood?

Alaska. There are no "just" suburban places, I'm guessing.

Keeping chickens for eggs and meat has kind of of following here.    You've got to make the pens really sturdy.  Sturdier than this woman's neighbor did.   She let the bear finish the chicken and then it went on its way.  It is a black bear.  Another photo.

garbage bears end up dead, and people here don't want that.  there are hefty fines if you leave your trash out and in the last 17 years I've lived here, the town has gotten serious about ending garbage bears, and I'm grateful for that.  We have around 10,000 black bears in the immediate vicinity, and there are brown bears here, too.  the brown bears we have in this part of the world are more closely genetically related to polar bears than they are the brown bears of the lower 48.

Why have garbage when yo can have fresh chicken, also think about that rocky clip where he's trying to catch chickens. From what I understand bears are fast.

I've lived here since 1997 and have spent a lot of time out in the woods.  Bears are fairly predictable and are no more likely to attack you than a stray dog would.  Mostly they want to get away from people.  Nobody has been mauled here since the 1950s.  I've seen a lot of bears, but have had no problems with them.

Now the next island over, the native name for the island is kootznoowoo which means "fortress of the bears".   it's a 1000 square mile island with about 1000 brown bears on it.  huge brown bears.  no black bears.  people go over there and go deer hunting, and after they shoot a deer, they have to pack it out to their boat, which is more or less like fishing for bears.   people get attacked over there every couple of years.

sometimes you do come across areas called bear kitchens where the bears drag the salmon out of the water and have a spot in the forest that's all tramped down with salmon strewn about.  those you don't spend too much time in.    you see a lot of bear crap on the trails, and I've seen many places in the ferns and berries where you can tell a bear curled up and took a nap or slept overnight.

I think it was Survivorman I was watching that said the female bear protecting her cub is the most dangerous encounter.  More so than a hungry male.  I dont think I'd handle either situation well.  Really without a good weapon, a person could only bluff a bear.

Cool photos.

Everyone knows the way to frighten off a bear is to whip our your lappy and PS them retreating.

Oh, a live chicken.

Just last night I was talking about bears with some people and telling them that North American black bears are fairly small (well, for bears) and not aggressive, and frequently wander around peopled areas. Told them about Meatball, or Glen Bearian, who walked into a Starbucks last year.
