It turns out a used car Wiley bought back in 2004 may be coming back to haunt her.

"They're telling me it's the remaining balance of a sale. A $274 sales tax," Wileysaid.

Plus the $299,999,726 for the Justin Beiber autographed car wrap.

Personally, I would have gotten the Jostin Beibar autographed one for $19.95 from China.  It's a scribble, no one can tell the difference.

Sun Trust was where my wifes identity theft problem mushroomed into over a year of hell for her. She told everyone involved that she was not making or approving a cash transfer for $17K to ST but all parties went right ahead and did so anyway. Between that, someone buying Apple computers every day for a week in Manhattan and a few other scams some banks ignored they lost somewhere over $35K before taking Mrs.Kritter seriously.

This is precisely why I have checking accounts at multiple banks.  If one goes tits up, I don't have to rely on other people to fill in for a bank error.

This is the GA Dept of Revenue,  they will miss sending you a tax bill for years, then put liens on your accounts.

Yeah SunTrust pretty much sucks.  I'm about fed up with them myself.  I've had an account there for the past ten years, and they've been more of a pain than their worth.  Their IT system seriously seems to just suck.  Trying to add my wife to my account after we got married was a month-long ordeal that they totally buggered.  My wife's bank took one visit and a day or two to process the change.

Sounds like someone is balancing their books or entered the wrong account on a zba relationship (zero balance account).

What bank would allow a od that high? That kind of loss would hurt the ceo bonus.

The actual number like they did in the article when they said "$300 million". Tens of millions can be $20-$90 million, so putting it tells me nothing aside from the fact that you like to try to "mix it up" when you write your news stories vs relaying useful information.

Anyways, since this is reporting on her having the tens of millions as of Thursday evening, maybe by tonight they will edit the article so I can get proper information.

What is the sentence supposed to mean anyway?

"As of Thursday evening, Wiley has tens of millions pending to credit into her bank account. "

Why would they credit her "tens of millions" when the error is 300 million. Or does it mean that it's just another weird transaction for her to deal with? It's a sloppy sentence.

ATTENTION ALL SUNTRUST BANK MEMBERS:  SWITCH!

Seriously, who uses Suntrust anymore?  I had an account when I was a teen (set up by my parents when I was a kid).  By the time I graduated college and started actually making and spending money I noticed there was a cap on my daily withdrawals - $300.  I called and had it upped to more (I don't remember how much).  Then I noticed this "privilege" to access my own money came with a $17/mo fee!  So I called back.  If I wanted I could go back down to the $300 limit, and the fee would be $7 a month.  WTF?  How about no.   If you use Suntrust, you must not like keeping your money.

/Switched to USAA
//Never been happier

///FYI - anyone can have a USAA checking/savings account.  It's the insurance you need to be a military member or family member to get.

2013-06-13 09:21:03 AM
In some ways you are lucky it is $300 million, if it was like $5000 nobody would give a shiat.  At least here it makes the news and they will have to acknowledge an error and sort it out where as with 5K nobody will care and the DOR will screw you or take a good while to sort it.

2013-06-13 09:21:56 AM
Hopefully the DOR double-reverses the mistake and credits her $300M... long enough for her to transfer it to a country without extradition treaties with the USA.

2013-06-13 09:24:32 AM
I assume the DOR is similar to Revenue Canada.  They never make mistakes.  After months and months they may eventually send you an updated "review", but they will NEVER EVER acknowledge that an error was made on their end.

2013-06-13 09:33:42 AM
And now imagine the government making a small error in a database with 300 million people's life details. Suddenly innocent information no-one had a reason to hide ruins lives.

2013-06-13 09:41:53 AM
I keep trying to withdraw $300 million from my bank's ATM. The day I find an ATM that will spit out $330 million, Hong Kong, here I come.

I guess I should get a passport.

And at least twenty pieces of matching luggage. You know. For the money.

2013-06-13 09:49:00 AM
She actually has it sort of good- nobody is going to believe $300M is anything but a major error somewhere along the line.

Imagine if it was $10K.  She'd die of old age and you'd have to bury her cellphone with her to keep the collection agencies away.

That's exactly right. But the question is why didn't Sun Trust deny the transaction? Did they really wire 300MM to the tax guys? Because if they did I think there's a bit of a hole at their SWIFT/FEDWIRE/ACH desk.

WhiskeyBoy: /Switched to USAA
//Never been happier

I've been a USAA member (former military) for many years and can't second this enough. Now that anyone can bank with them, I'm constantly encouraging my friends and relatives who are still using B of A, Wells Fargo, Chase, etc., to switch. It's amazing how big of a difference basic customer service makes. I've never spoken to a rep there who wasn't helpful, friendly, and well-trained.

So I use USAA for most of my banking. I use a local credit union for the rest (including cash deposits, which you can't do with USAA). I tell people if they're not going to use USAA the next-best option is a local credit union. However, you need to be careful to choose one that's in the 21st century. The CU I had before I changed to my current CU had a website that looked like it was from the 1980s and had no mobile phone app either.

When someone tells me they've never had a problem with their big bank, I tell them that when and if they do have a problem they will regret not switching sooner. I've never had the problems with USAA that I hear about other banks' customers having.

My last place literally had a SunTrust Bank next door. When I moved there, I was going to open an account- until I looked them up. Basically every reference I looked at said precisely the same thing: that they couldn't actually perform accounting.

"but did say it has no documents showing the department is in the wrong "

This is how the CA Franchise Tax Board operates. It's scary.

They've stolen about $2000 from me over the years by directly deducting money from my account due to "outstanding charges" for vehicle registration... for cars I sold up to 15 years ago. "Yes sir, we got the copies of the Bill of Sale and Release of Liability, but that doesn't prove you sold the car."

There's also the several thousand dollar refund they denied because I couldn't produce receipts for the mileage and per diem deductions I took... which is not the way it works.

I farking hate California.

I have a hard time believing you couldn't find a legal vampire (lawyer) willing to take the fight to them for the low low price of 75% of what you shouldn't have had to pay plus fees.

No kidding!  And what do you suppose would happen if the error had been in the other direction - she checks her balance and finds it's +$300,000,000???  How fast do you think they'd find the cause of that error?

2013-06-13 02:40:24 PM
And why is it a mystery why these debits happened?  Can't they simply go to the debiting organization and say "What the fark?  Explain this right now!  Do we have to cut off all of your electronic debiting access until you can explain why you aren't a reckless danger to our institution and our customers?  Hell, multiple screwups at $100,000,000 each - you might be a hazard to our states economy!"

Seriously how were these transactions even allowed to go through?

They should have thrown up more red flags than exist in China!

Lawsuit is a coming i guarantee it.

2013-06-13 05:05:07 PM
I have no idea why anyone would use a regular bank.  Use a local credit union.  They are not there to screw you over to make money for the shareholder. As a member you are a shareholder.  They are there just to be your financial institution.  They have to make just enough money to meet overhead, not some big number for the stockholders.

Most of them are members of a national group of ATM's so you can get $$ out all over the place without a fee. Now that we mostly all have smart phones finding a participating ATM is not that big a deal.
