First world post problems.

Of course there is less than 4000 cases still, I think there are roughly 6 million kids in the 5-19 age range, so I think that an incidence per year of roughly 63 per 100,000. Certainly an issue that is rising, and probably need to look into ways it can be addressed, but hardly a crisis.

Nearly 200 teenage girls were admitted with pregnancy complications, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and the potentially fatal pre-eclampsia.

Who's farking all the fat chicks?

Since Americans and Britons are generally from the same genetic stock, they'll fatten up too.

Well, there won't be any fish left after global warming kills off the global plankton population.  What are we supposed to do then, with all of these obese bratty youngsters and no readily available food supply?

Possible confounding variable: Has the generally increased awareness of the impact of obesity over that timescale led to more illnesses being regarded as obesity related?

Worthless anecdata: When I was a child all the fat kids had asthma. My recollection is that their fatness was attributed to their inability to exercise, rather than their asthma being attributed to their fatness.

True, but simply quoting the researchers, in the BBC's article, makes for some sobering reading:

"What's new about our paper is that we're actually showing it's not a ticking time-bomb - the time-bomb is exploding within the early life course, so in other words in the teenage years. That's where it's becoming manifest."

I work in the NHS (so I'm really getting a kick etc). You know the saying there's lies, damn lies and then there's statistics? Never more true than with healthcare data.

I don't deny obesity in children is far from ideal, and [probably] increasing, but the way that we record data, and the way that changes every year, means it's ever so easy to cook up these big percent changes.

I would suggest that, like the U.S., women of larger size are often seen accompanied by men who are
rumored to have larger than average penis..
