Sad to hear, Jason was a pretty good driver who more often than not got caught up in other people's problems.

Godspeed Jason, you're racing with the legends now.

Posted this over in TFD before I noticed this one:

farking racing. Love the sport, hate how quick the sport can lose a really good person because of it.  I got to interview Leffler once at Martinsville, dude answered every question everyone had, and then talked about how kids for another 10 minutes on top of it.  The sport lost a good one tonight.

NASCAR is one of those things I never understood, but it sucks to see someone talented die too soon.

Thoughts are with his family and friends.

Igor Jakovsky: What happened with him? On a dirt track?

Huge wreck in a sprint car race on the front stretch. The track is .625 long, so the cars get a ton of speed off the high banked corners.  Apparently he died on the way to the hospital.

There's a few Cup drivers-Tony Stewart comes to mind, who have an "anywhere anytime" attitude to racing.

Winged Sprint?  No wing?  410?  360?

Doesn't really matter.  He's gone now.  Thats the sad part.   That photo is pretty heartbreaking if it was at the track tonight (with his son)

From what I've gathered, the wreck was on the front stretch.  Bridgeport is a .625 high banked track, so if they were on the throttle when the wreck occurred, it was probably a pretty violent crash.

So tragic. Always sad to see a racer go. Felt the shock when I saw "killed" right after his name on my phone notifications. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

Sprint cars regularly have gnarly wrecks, so it had to have been something really, really bad.

Witnesses say something went wrong with the right front as he came off the 4th turn, it dug in and he filpped repeatedly down the front strech.  He was running second in his heat race at the time of the accident.  Met him in 2000 when he ran Indy, heck of a guy.

RIP

Hopefully to make that picture a little less sad, if possible, but from what I can see, that picture was taken at Charlotte, not tonight.

Those 410s are death waiting to happen. Remember when Leffler got the first few years with the 11 under JGR? Must've had some good money from that, should've just bought a handful of rental properties and lived out a middle class life upon a forced retirement in his 30s. Guess he wasn't built for that.

You know how some of the guys who came from dirt racing are: If there's a race, and there's free time, they're going racing.  Tony Stewart said he'll run 70+ races a year, usually pulling both the Cup race and a sprint car race once a week. Leffler was one of those guys.

2013-06-12 11:52:53 PM
Looking at the picture it looks like the cage is intact, but the seatmount came undone; it seems to be leaning out of the driver's cutout.

Not a big name, but huge respect to the guy to keep doing what he loved, even after his dreams of the big time fell away.  Hope that his family will be taken care of.

That's a much larger track than what these guys usually run. Very sad.

From Long Beach, Calif., Leffler made 423 starts in NASCAR's three national series, but won just the two Nationwide races and one Truck Series event in a career that began in 1999. He also made three IndyCar Series starts, finishing 17th in the 2000 Indianapolis 500.

"Just" accomplishing those feats are really huge.  This was the first I read of this tragedy and it pissed me off to no end.  So, fark you NBC10 in Philly.  And RIP Jason Leffler and condolences to his family.

2013-06-13 12:05:57 AM
He lost his full time ride in the regular touring series so he was making a go doing whatever events he could.  Sorry to see these tragic events happen, but unfortunatly with as far as safety has advanced, you can't protect against everything.  The car looks fairly intact, is there a neck restraint in these type cars or is it optional?  Intact roll cage or not, if your head isn't secured, a violent motion can cause neck fractures that lead to near certain death.

The seat damage might be from the extrication.

It's a shame. I remember his name from the Truck series.

I apologize.  He wasn't a nobody, he was just a NASCAR driver who hadn't really made a name for himself by not winning many races.  I'm sure someone will correct why he was an important racer who couldn't win races and why I should care more than any other random fool dying soon.

Let me guess...next you're going to tell us your Olympic boxing record and about how your Little League career was cut short by a crowbar in the back.

No, this seems more like giving a newsflash to Tebow getting signed by the Patriots.  For people who are into the sport it's kind of newsy, but it's sure as fark not a newsflash

I don't remember Dan Wheldon getting his own newsflash for his death.  Or Junior Seau.  Clint Malarchuk sure didn't get one, but that's only cause Fark didn't exist yet.

Didn't need one. If you'd followed the thread, you'd know why. Dumbass. Go back to following college boy farking or professional drug taking or whatever the fark it is you you like.

Dear Leffler Family,

Though your loved one's death is definitely bad, in the grand scheme of things, it's not worthy of a newsflash tag on the news aggregate site that I frequent.

Hope the summer's going well otherwise!

I feel bad for his family and friends, and even his fans, but a newsflash for a guy who won two NASCAR races in his life?  I'm sure it's sad for lots of people, but lots of people die every day.  They're not all newsflashes.
