muck4doo: How does subby know that the people complaining wear flag clothing?

It showed up on Fox News, therefore it is a given that the people who are "outraged" wear crap with the flag on it and then--just to make sure that people get the point--they stick on a giant-sized flag pin.

/By the way, has anyone else noticed that fewer and fewer politicians are wearing those flag pins?

noitsnot: I'm sure we're all on the same page here, but it may as well get said:  The flag is not holy.  The citizens of the country are what matters - not the flag or the pledge of allegiance or the national anthem.  Go ahead and wipe your ass with the flag.  Who cares.  It's about the people.  The soldiers of our country pledge themselves to defend the people, and we, in turn, look the other way when they get drunk and piss on the door handles of our cars in roadhouse parking lots.  This thing of getting all pissy about the flag is just a way for people to feel superior because they have a bigger stick up their ass about some colored cloth.

This. Although military personnel are expected to show deference and respect for the flag, nowhere in the Oath of Office is there the concept of defending the flag, only the Constitution. Oh, they mightdefend the flag, but I think it's far more likely they'd defend citizens, the innocent, or the guy firing next to them.

Well, I'd say using an actual American flag as a table runner or table cloth is pretty distasteful. Using a table cloth/runner that's printed to look like a flag but isn't an actual flag is fine.

fusillade762: So when is it A flag vs being "flag-inspired"? What's the difference, exactly?

Let's not be dense. If it's sewn with raised stars onto nylon, it has a different connotation than a printed paper napkin. Perhaps they oughtn't be printing napkins like that either---not really my call. Surely it should always be legal to use a real American flag as a tablecloth, or as toilet paper. But either one is in poor taste in my opinion.

/holy shiat, is there American flag toilet paper? I think I just figured out how to make a few bucks advertising on Mother Jones and Salon.com....

liquidpoo: fusillade762: Instead of recommending the use of a flag as a tablecloth, HGTV ought to have directed viewers to one of the many flag-inspired tablecloths

One is a flag and one is not a flag.

Barfmaker: One is a flag, one is not.

Nabb1: "Flag-inspired" means something that incorporates the colors and motif of the flag but is not intended to be a flag, an actual flag is something intended to be used as a flag. Flag motif attire is often tacky, but no one expects anyone to fly a polo shirt on a flagpole.

this reminds me of my uncle (ex-navy chief) who got all facebookie-outrage during last 4 of july when Katy Perry wore a flag-inspired dress (he linked to the UK inspired one to boot) and also linked to the US Flag/Uniform code:

www.blogcdn.comwww.polyvore.comimg.thesun.co.uk

which if you read the code and want to obfuscate flag vs flag-inspired, you can have some fun with it:

(g) The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.

Last time I was "home" for Independence Day (as in "where I fled from at the earliest possible moment") was about five years ago, and my sister made one of these:

Being the dork that I am, I pointed out that she was several stars short; she answered that if she punched me in the right spot, I'd see the remaining stars but wouldn't be able to count them.

Flag code states that a flag such whenever a reasonable viewer determines it to be so. So if your kid fingerpaints a flag at school and you can reasonably make out red and white stripes with a field of blue in the corner with some white splotches that are supposed to be stars, you have a bonafide U.S.A. Flag.

drjekel_mrhyde: SBinRR: The flag in the picture is too damned expensive to use as a tablecloth.  Easily a $30 flag they have there.

I got one at home depot for $10 and it has been holding up since Memorial day

Ah, very well then.
Carry on.

These superstitious mouth-breathers still don't understand the difference between a symbol and a literal piece of cloth they bought at Wal-Mart.
If your brother gave his life for the Chinese-made piece of cloth that cost you $18.87 at Wallyworld, I feel very sorry for him indeed.

It's about respect .. you don't want to see a 'US Flag' disposed of in the garbage, even if it is just a piece of paper or plastic,

For celebrations, using the colors, white stars on blue, etc is acceptable, See bunting.

It's just cloth. I don't want to be bothered having to set up a "proper" disposal for one. Honestly, I find this whole flag worship in the US incredibly creepy.
