(Gawker)   People who use the American flag for pants, shirts, camping chairs and bandannas are very offended that that HGTV suggested using an American flag for a tablecloth   (gawker.com) divider line 196

I do find the flag polo shirts and shorts a bit revolting, just like the logos of some companies that use a barely-modified US flag to pimp their services. But this was possibly the most ill-conceived idea ever, from a company that usually has better judgement.

Instead of recommending the use of a flag as a tablecloth, HGTV ought to have directed viewers to one of the many flag-inspired tablecloths

So when is it A flag vs being "flag-inspired"? What's the difference, exactly?

I always love that about Tea Bagger rallies. People with American flag hats, ties, tshirts, shorts... "We love America! That's why we defame the flag!"

The flag in the picture is too damned expensive to use as a tablecloth.  Easily a $30 flag they have there.

"Flag-inspired" means something that incorporates the colors and motif of the flag but is not intended to be a flag, an actual flag is something intended to be used as a flag. Flag motif attire is often tacky, but no one expects anyone to fly a polo shirt on a flagpole.

I noticed the OSHA safety poster in our break room is laminated in plastic.

Based on HGTV's reasoning, I suppose I could use that for a table place mat next time I eat in there.

"I am appalled that you would suggest using the flag that my brother was killed defending in Iraq as something to catch spills on a table at a cookout."

These superstitious mouth-breathers still don't understand the difference between a symbol and a literal piece of cloth they bought at Wal-Mart.
If your brother gave his life for the Chinese-made piece of cloth that cost you $18.87 at Wallyworld, I feel very sorry for him indeed.

To crush your peppers, season your burgers before you, and eat upon the laminations of your safety posters.

Did the material start out as an actual item that could be run up an actual flagpole? It's a flag. Does it merely have the same colors or patterns as an item that could be run up a flagpole ? It's flag-inspired.

Nope.  Repubs have stocked up on Constitutional toilet paper for your morning constitution for the next hundred years (double if you're a minority or do things in private that make hoverround-riding raw cookie doughboys feel icky).

I'm sure we're all on the same page here, but it may as well get said:  The flag is not holy.  The citizens of the country are what matters - not the flag or the pledge of allegiance or the national anthem.  Go ahead and wipe your ass with the flag.  Who cares.  It's about the people.  The soldiers of our country pledge themselves to defend the people, and we, in turn, look the other way when they get drunk and piss on the door handles of our cars in roadhouse parking lots.  This thing of getting all pissy about the flag is just a way for people to feel superior because they have a bigger stick up their ass about some colored cloth.
