Dr. Goldshnoz: but fark isn't full of over opinionated snarky people. its overflowing with them.

You don't have to be opinionated and snarky to be a narcissist, but it helps.

I'm glad there's a safe haven for us degenerates. I know way too many decent people to properly snark on Facebook.

/They wouldn't appreciate my genius anyway

2013-06-12 11:39:15 AM
They're easy to troll, so that's nice.

Well, well, well.  It appears science is actually starting to confirm what was already known, if one would allow their common sense to come through.

FB and Twitter were designed from the start for the clueless narcissist.  Not included are the grandparents who try to stay aware of their extended family--I think they just like seeing what their relatives are doing.

And FARK is for the opposite type of person.  Virtually all of us are shadow-dwelling snarky shiats who probably know better than to voice their true opinions out in the wild.  $10 to the person who knows my real name, place of work, and exact address.

/If you actually find it, don't post here.  Email me for your prize.

This is largely true. I opened a fake Facebook account for the sole purpose of reading the page that belongs to a former coworker of my brother. It is the perfect Facebook page to illustrate this point.

Whiny self-obsessed poetry (with horrible grammar and misspellings)? Check.
Posts dozens of duck-faced selfies? Check.
Flirty suggestive posts just to tease male "friends" into giving her "likes?" Check.

At least once each week there is a post about how she is so hot she gets hit on everywhere. Not too long ago she was talking about how the guys who work at the local Dunkin Donuts lust after her. She said their flirting was getting so bad she had to go through the drive thru instead of going inside because it was causing a scene. When no one believed her she posted a picture of a Dunkin Donuts iced-coffee cup, on which was written in blue marker "Why didn't you come in?" She said they wrote it on her cup that morning. However, in frame, right next to the cup on her work desk, is a blue marker with the cap off.

That's what my local news FB pages are for. Years of Farking have prepared me well for the role of Lead Derper.

FB also sucks for an introvert.

Here, I can speak my mind more or less openly without fear.

Unless my wife stumbles upon the thread.

Study researchers who invent words like "overvaluate" should be punched in the nuts.

Magnets for narcissists or conducive to encouraging narcissism in people who might have narcissistic tendencies but aren't especially far outside of societal norms? (too lazy to RTFA, hopefully that's at least a followup study)

The internet is awash with narcissists, as that is the natural defense of overt criticism.

When faced with hordes of people online who disagree with you or are simply quietly judging you (FB), the defense is either to withdraw (not care) or say as many self-help guru's would "I love myself and that's the start of loving others".

I'm pretty sure there are enough narcissists in the world that pretty much EVERY group or company or online community has a large portion of them.

2013-06-12 06:55:33 PM
Too many shares and reposts on FB these days.

2013-06-12 08:09:21 PM
Of course, Fark itself has "funny" and "smart" buttons and a "favorite" system.
Thankfully it can't bury posts.

The only time I "mark" posters (the "favorites" system) on Fark is when TF people disparage those who don't pay $5.
"Oh god the liters are going to be here"
"it's gone green, I'm out"
"get ready for derp when it hits mainpage"
and so on.

Those are the most apparent narcissists here.

Three year old article is still relevant.

http://www.forbes.com/2010/04/26/popular-social-networking-sites-for be s-woman-time-facebook-twitter.html

"57% female and attracts 46 million more female visitors than male visitors per month. Plus, women are more active on Facebook. Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg says women on Facebook have 8% more friends and participate in 62% of the sharing."

Soo, women are more likely to be narcissists?  Who knew...

Well, they are sort of hard-wired for gossip. Raising offspring was a communal affair for early man (and still is in some cultures) and Facebook feeds into that instinct very well. Perhaps too well.
