That's what I was thinking.  As long as there is some code enforcement issue on the books where you live that can be applied, expect to get a fine plus a bill in due course.

So what's the over/under on $100 bucks for that playoff trim?

sno man: So what's the over/under on $100 bucks for that playoff trim?

Around here the fine from code enforcement alone would by $150, plus the cost of the mow, plus the cost of a certified letter from the county to inform you that you owe the fine and the cost of the mowing.

Plus the lien on the title to ensure payment. Around here, the total comes to roughly $600 for an average size yard. Tfa doesn't mention the warnings, notices, citations, etc this guy's been receiving for the last few weeks / months.

I was gonna guess in the $800s.  Why should the city worry about what the mower wants to charge?

It goes on the next property tax bill.  At least that's what happens around here if we don't mow the brush in our fields.

Wow, that's pretty strict.  Last year we (new parents) let the yard of our new house... get away from us, and as a result all sorts of things grew about 1-2 feet high.  A lot of them had flowers so it didn't look terrible, kind of like a meadow garden.  But the only complaint we got was that some bushes that obstructed the view around the corner be trimmed, for traffic safety.  Nobody threatened to mow our lawn.

I once tried to naturally fertilize my yard by not picking  up my dog's poop.  After about 6 months the city of Rockville, Maryland sent someone to clean the poop up for me.  They charged me 1200 do pick it up, 1300 to dispose of the hazardous material, 400 for the pooper scooper, 200 for the bags and 1000 for having an ugly wife.  I was ok with it, except for the fact that I did not get to keep the pooper scooper and they left me with my wife.

So the city or someone they pay can just trespass onto private property when they feel like it? I can see fining him if it's a law but what makes it legal to trespass?

200 bucks if they have to do it here, but it does not matter the lawn size on a private residence.

So if you have a BIG hilly lawn, and just dont care anymore, its better to just let it go.

If it is legal, it is not trespass.  Inspectors, responders, etc can access your property legally.  Hazards and violations can be addressed by city staff legally.  This isn't anything new or surprising.

I let part of my yard overgrow for privacy... Electric Company comes by every few years to trim the trees. Never had any problems with the city because of it.

Looks nice, but it's mostly 10 minute itch, poison ivy and pricker bushes.

Try cutting through that, ya little bastards. : )

Reminds me of one guy that 'won' his car in Repo Games. When asked what he learned, he said "If you don't pay your bills, someone else will!"

Same thing with lawns, I guess. Only if you don't cut it, someone else will, but you will get a  bill for it, and if you don't pay that, you get liened.

Its because tall lawns are a public safety hazard in the city. Apparently, they are a great place for criminal activity.

Also I worked for the city for a while and if I can recall the fine is a very reasonable $500.

Why are people surprised by this? Even here in West Texas where we can't grow a lawn this is a law.

And a great place for vermin to live. In urban or inner-suburb areas, giving rats a foothold in the middle of a neighborhood is frowned upon.

That's why I xeriscape or garden as much as possible. The land around my house exists to provide supplemental food.

Also, in my little neck of the suburbs, if the city has to send the lawn crew out, they not only charge you a fine and such, they also make an announcement in the newspaper. It's awesome, in an old man way, to see who in the neighborhood is a deadbeat.

I agree, but the headline also implies that the "city" will send someone to cut the lawm.

Around here when you say "the city", it means Chicago.

Park Ridge is a small wealthy suburb.

No, no it is not. Grass looks good. Unkempt lawns do not. Unmown lawns become a huge fire risk in dry spells. They tend to harbor vermin too. Unkempt lawns can be a home for noxious weeds as well which cause millions if not billions a year in economic damage.

This kind of thing almost got me into a neighbor feud.  A lady living two doors down behind our street owns three lots, only the lot with her house is fenced while the other two lots behind me and my next door neighbor is unfenced and blends into the open field back there.  One day the city came out and mowed the whole field and sent her a bill for her property that was mowed during the process.  She thought I called them.  We didn't talk before or after, but for a while she would come out her house and just watch us and occasionally yell stuff.  It really pissed her off that I put a gate on the backside of my privacy fence (fence is a foot short of property line) so I can trim along the backside of my fence.  Older lady, so just waiting to see how much longer before she dies.

Gonz: Also, in my little neck of the suburbs, if the city has to send the lawn crew out, they not only charge you a fine and such, they also make an announcement in the newspaper. It's awesome, in an old man way, to see who in the neighborhood is a deadbeat.

In a small town, wouldn't you already know who doesn't mow their lawn if you cared?  Or do you wait for the paper so you can drive pass their house real slow taunting them with a weed trimmer?

I guess if you really want to get to them, walk down the street like you are pushing a baby stroller.  Only when they come out to see the baby, you are really pushing a spreader with weed control in it.
