Yes, yes, just as Monty Python explained British culture to all of us Yanks.

Actually, it did do that.

The O'Reilly Factor
it's one you should dip into if you want to understand staunch conservatism in the U.S.
mendacious blowhards.

Fixt.

Incorrect.

NO ONE should watch The View.

2013-06-11 09:07:56 PM
No Breaking Bad?

2013-06-11 09:27:04 PM
Seems like they just wrote a list of big things about American culture and came up with a list of television shows vaguely related to the topics?

Veep - Governmental uselessness
Simpsons - Middle class America
Portlandia - Hippies
Girls - Hipsters
TDS/TCR - Libbie libs
O'Reilly - Reality-hostile, reactionary sociopaths, homophobes, and racists (read: conservatives)
Glee - Uhhh...idk. Gay culture? Tokenism in American Media? (To this day I have no idea what the hell Glee is about, nor do I have any desire to know.)
Duck Dynasty - Exploitative rich people making money by pretending to be members of a gullible, yet disposable-income-posessing, social demographic
Nashville - Being attractive is more important than being talented
The View - The complete and utter vapidity of daytime television

Mugato: No Breaking Bad?

Just what I was thinking. Breaking Bad is the quintessential American tale.

What about Happy Days? Heeeeey.

2013-06-11 09:41:54 PM
Andy Griffith? Maybe that's more historical fiction these days but it's pretty damn American.

Somewhere out there, a pedophile foot fetishist is masturbating furiously to that.

/actually, I take that back. Even pedos have standards

All in the Family, Friends, Arrested Development.

OMG we are a horrible people

MaudlinMutantMollusk: //Drew Carey sucks

Actually, I just watched him the other day for the first time in years, and I think he's grown into the role quite well.  I definitely cringed far less than I did in the early days (except for the part when he was obviously hitting on the well-endowed, black college girl)

I think it's time for him to lose the giant glasses, though.  He could be legitimately semi-attractive at this point, assuming the massive weight loss hasn't given him horrible, saggy skin all over his body.

He had it cut off and used to upholster his living room set.

Dear Brits,
No.

Best,
Timujin

It's all parodies.  Yeah if you want an extremely satirical view of American culture go for it.

Then again, everything I know about british culture I got from old Oliver Twist movies.

Drew Carey when he was in the Marine Corps looked good, but he also looked like someone about to go off on a killing spree:

Drew Carey now looks like a damn pedophile:

He's growing his hair out because it's thinning, but he needs to go back to the short buzz cut, baldness be damned.  He looks like a deranged Mr. Rogers.

Have your children watch Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood. We're not totally sociopath.

Other than the complete lack of black people.

The only one of those shows I have ever watched is the Simpsons and that was like maybe two or three episodes. I didn't think it was funny.

Brits may not be aware that Oregon has a reputation for housing what Americans call "crunchies."

No, we don't call them that. We call them "hipsters".

Portlandia, maybe. But Girls? The Girls Universe is a lilly-white Brooklyn, very few minorities at all. And they are all very farked up, insane women who cause their own hardships. But then, what do I know. It's popular so I guess there really is a group of women who identify with Girls.

Crunchies are the people who actually had real ideas and philosophers on life. Hipsters are the bored kids from the suburbs who found a trend to follow because they can't be bothered to come up with their own ideas.

Am I the only one who absolutely hated that pile of sappy schmaltz? I think that movie gave me diabetes..

We have no culture except spurs and cowboy hats.

My former boss was a British expat, and he and I joked all the time about the stereotypical things we were supposed to be according to television. I decorated his office in all French stuff when he went on vacation.

Here's the real cross-cultural list:

US:

NFL
NCAA football/men's basketball
Not all Americans own guns (this is a shocker)

UK:

Eurovision
Soccer
Royal family is kept to feed paparazzi

Because People in power are Stupid: [www.mhsmustangnews.com image 600x338]

Shows the inanity of American lives.

As stupid as that show is I found myself tempted to count the toes on that person in the picture.
I figure there's got to be someone in that family with too many or too few, and this one just happened to be the most normal of the group.
/scared myself

This show really reflects American culture.  Society is full of mindless, unclean monsters who consume everything in their path without any regard for anyone but themselves.

The first article I open after getting home has in its first picture the same neon sign I just walked past going north on 1st Ave. across Burnside to get back to the Davis St. ramp. Cool.

The Simpsons and Portlandia are on there, that's good enough for me.

I second that.  Not much diversity on that list.  I guess Brits hate Black/Brown people also...

All they need to know they can learn from COPS.
Anything else they want to know they can get from Paula Deen

The list was poor at best. Direct political commentary shouldn't be included in any list and shows with agendas shouldn't be included either. If anything they should include American food shows (probably from the Food Channel) as food tells a lot about the culture of a country.
