King Something: Mrtraveler01: You know, we talk about how the US is a 1984 dystopic totalitarian state but it's still pretty decent compared to the stuff compared what's going on in places like Turkey.

America - not as bad as Turkey!

/what ever happened to America being #1?

Obama kept his campaign promise to end American arrogance, by ending American exceptionalism.

/how did you think we would "rejoin the international community" of tyrannical hellholes?

This apparently shows some opinions about Erdogan from his supporters and members of his party.
Their plan of Islamicisation is no longer covert.
(Coco:  let me know if there are problems with any of the translations).
Quite scary stuff. Isn't some of this blasphemous?

Fake poet Fatma Durmus: `Making Tayyip sad is making Allah sad`
AKP Aydin city leader Ismail Eser: `Recep Tayyip Erdogan is like a second prophet for us`
AKP Bursa MP Huseyin Sahin: `Believe me, I think, even touching our prime minister is divine service`
EU Mayer and chief negotiator Egemen Bagis: `The place where our prime minister was born is such a holy place too`
AKP Cayeli municipality Riza Cakir: `The televizion that our Prime Minister will appear on cannot be put on the floor`
Sycophant journalist Yigit Bulut: `The prime minister is my atamdir (founding father)`
Fickle politician Suleyman Soylu: Erdogan is the eternal head of Turkey`
Health deputy minister Agah Kafkas: `Doing the same thing that prime minister does is like a prayer`

Slaxl: Satanic_Hamster: I know there's a few Turkish Farkers on occasion.  Anyone see a good explanation on why the PM is being so...  Well, douchey?  I mean his rhetoric, calling the environmental protesters scum, terrorists, criminal cabal, etc etc.

It's all about Erdogan trying to rid himself of Kemalism, and finally the people have said enough! No more! This far and no further!

Here is an explanation from an ex-supporter of the AKP:

It's ok everyone, I have gotten the opinions of the Turkish people over there.  Here is a highlight of what everyone has said.  (Translated for your approval.)

Everything is catching
Yes, everything is catching on fire
(everythings catching on fire)
Everything is catching on fire (everythings catching on fire)

Fingertips
Fingertips

I hear the wind blow
I hear the wind blow
It seems to say, hello, hello,
Im the one who loves you so.

Hey now everybody now
Hey now everybody
Hey now everybody now

Whos that standing out the window?

I found a new friend underneath my pillow.

C'mon (C'mon) and wreck my car
C'mon (C'mon) and wreck my car
C'mon (C'mon) and wreck my car

Aren't you the guy who hit me in the eye?
Aren't you the guy who hit me in the eye?

Please pass the milk, please
Please pass the milk, please
Please pass the milk, please

Leave me alone, leave me alone

Whos knocking on the wall?

All alone all alone
All by myself

What's that blue thing doing here?

Something grabbed ahold of my hand
I didn't know what had my hand
But that's when all my troubles began

I don't understand you (I don't understand you)
I just don't understand you (I don't understand you)
I don't understand the things you say
I can't understand a single word
I don't understand you (I don't understand you)
I just don't understand you (I don't understand you)
I cannot understand you (I don't understand you)
I don't understand you (I don't understand you)

I heard a sound, I turned around
I turned around to find the thing
That made the sound

Mysterious whisper
Mysterious whisper
Mysterious whisper
Mysterious whisper

The day that love came to play

I'm having a heart attack
I'm having a heart attack
I'm having a heart attack
I'm having a heart attack

I walk along darkened corridors
And I walk along darkened corridors
I walk along darkened corridors
And I walk along darkened corridors

Is this where I point out that "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" is actually not a TMBG song, but a cover?

=Smidge=
/The TMBG version is still the best version, though...

I made some QnD maps for anyone travelling to Istanbul for fun.  If you're there for more than 2 or 3 days, let me know and I can give more directed advice.

Agarista, thanks for that. Some of my friends have been getting a little nervous about the trip, and they're only meeting us down in Marmaris for a gulet trip. I'll be there a week before them and I'm hoping to see at least some of Istanbul itself.

Most of it should be just fine.  If you start to feel funky, take an overnight bus (like Ulusoy) to Izmir, but ask to get off at Selchuk.  Stay in Selcuk for a day or so (it's a cute town) and rent a vespa to go to Ephesus, the Artemis temple, and up the hill to the Greek town of Sirince (say shear-een-jay) which is famous for making fruit wine.
