(Chicago Trib)   Two arrested at Wrigley Field after they tried to spend counterfeit money during a Cubs/Pirates game. Apparently it's illegal to use fake bills during a fake MLB game   (chicagotribune.com) divider line 13

Jesus, subby, my poor Pirates are 37-26, only four other teams in the majors have a better winning percentage right now. Give 'em a break.

/Dad and I had World Series tickets in 1992
//didn't get to use 'em... *sigh*

The Pirates are really good, submitter.  Apart from getting swept by the Braves, they've been on quite a tear of late.

Yeah, the Cubs are still a joke, so I guess you could argue it was an exhibition game for the real team.

So that's what Glen Rice has been up to since banging Sarah Palin.

Fark is really lazy with baseball memes.  You still see people trotting out the "Yankees sign everyone for a jillion dollars LOL" meme, even though the Yankees have been cutting costs and getting decent outcomes out of moves that sounded hilariously bad at the time.  Want to make fun of a team spending huge amounts of money in a stupid way in 2013?  Call the greater Los Angeles area.

All of four teams have won more games than the Pirates this year.  Granted, they look a little lucky (runs allowed vs. runs scored isn't that lopsided), but they have a good, young offense that is likely to stay healthy and handle the long season well.  They play the best defense in the majors (73.6% of batted balls turned into outs, and it's a tough home park for defenders), and it's not particularly close.

Their rotation is suspect-- they've been getting great results from Burnett/Locke/Wandy/Gomez/Liriano, but that's not exactly a list of names known for consistent greatness, and their peripherals suggest that it's all an illusion.  It's hard to keep putting up good ERAs when you lead the league in walks.

I think the current rule is: The Pittsburgh Pirates are a legitimate team until July.

They have actually improved a lot in the last few years.

If you're going to bet on a team faltering in the late summer, just go by age.  One baseball game isn't very exhausting, but 162 games is especially brutal with today's travel requirements and the trend towards 3-game series.

B-Ref will sort teams by age, weighted by how often they play.  By that measure, the Pirates have the 8th-youngest offense, but their pitching is surprisingly old (29.9, where the league average is 28.8).  Given that their starters also have concerning injury histories, I'd focus your worry there.  They'll probably hit and field just fine.

(As you might expect, the Yankees are the oldest team.  It's not especially close-- both their position players and pitchers average more than a year older than the 2nd-oldest teams.)

No it wasn't.

I even went to game 2.  It's just not fair for them to get my hopes up again.

Don't counterfeit $20s, especially if you're just going to use them on cheap stuff.  $1 bills don't have any of the counterfeit detection stuff that higher bills do, and it's not like they're going to turn you away if you try to pay for $20 worth of beer and hot dogs with singles.
