Maybe put the barriers around Banana Peel Bridge.  If you put them on Suicide Bridge, people are just going to commit suicide over at Well Adjusted Bridge and get everybody all upset.

I don't want to jump to conclusions here, but I think naming it Suicide Bridge was just asking for trouble.

Is it really a "crunch"? Or is it more of a "splat"?

Instead, they should just put a large basket over the road below to keep jumpers from landing on commuters.

$2.5 million, plus maintenance, for 3 suicides per year?

What are cleanup costs?

How about, no.

My first thought when I read "Suicide Bridge" was that it was this one, which I used to live near in North London:
www.hamhigh.co.uk

Then when I looked I didn't immediately see that it wasn't.  Is death guaranteed from that kind of height?  Seems a bit low to me.  If I was going to do that I'd pick somewhere where you're guaranteed that it's going to work, instantly.  There's no suicidal depression that can't be made worse by becoming a quadriplegic, taking away the ability to commit suicide.

Can you really put a value on the mental anguish of the people who witness the suicides?

Maybe get the bridge out of Oregon and move it to somewhere less depressing.  At least the bridge is keeping up well for now, those arches are still uplifted.

The skinny ones go crunch.  The more heavier-set go splat.

I bet the really fat ones go "splooooosh" like a big ol' water balloon.

/Feel kinda bad for the cleanup crew-- I seriously doubt they get paid enough.

//Maybe public health clinics should give out free cyanide pills like they do condoms.  Yeah, it would be FAR better off in the long run to just do the right thing and invest in mental health treatment for all who need it, but since we're not going to do that...

I bet those are the cases where cops should be looking for a suspect.  I doubt they could climb over the side by themselves.  They can start by looking at relatives who recently rented a forklift.

Why don't they just line that road with mattresses?  Seems like a cheaper idea and certainly more fun.  People would jump off all the time but you wouldn't hear "the crunch of bodies" you'd hear shouts of joy and laughter as everyone has fun.

A friend of mine was tending the desk at a 30 story apartment building when someone jumped. He said the sound was exactly what you would expect but about a million times worse than you could imagine.  Having lived in that same building I can completely understand wanting to jump. The place was a shiathole.

2013-06-10 10:10:28 AM
If the guy behind the idea is butthurt about bout hearing 8 jumpers squish near his business, why doesnt he invest $30 in paint and paint a target on the ground so they don't land near him....either that or paint a chalk outline that says "Jumpers....Land Here".   Besides solving his practical problem at less than 1% of the cost of his gub-mint solution, if may cause the jumpers to have second thoughts.

My brother jumped off that bridge 20 years ago. He was kind of an a-hole.

I'm opposed to changing the bridge, because it won't make any difference. The jumpers will just find another bridge. Portland is full of bridges.

Studies show that total suicides fall by putting barriers up. One would assume that suicide is a long thought out process, however it is usually brought about by mental anguish, as well as rash and extreme emotions. This causes it to often be a (semi) split second decision so causing an inconvenience to someone will in many cases cause them to seek professional assistance and rethink their actions.

I think I learned this from this freakonomics article...

That is a lot of millions to spend on Portland hipsters who just want to not exist because they got fired from the coffee shop or their record collection got warped or something else lame. I say spend a few grand to weld rebar spikes off of it. so they get caught up and hang as a lifeless warning not to suck.

We just had a suicide barrier put up on a landmarky bridge nearby.  The stats were roughly less than one suicide per year until some local bigwigs made a stink about how it's an attractive nuisance and something should be done about it.  All of the press brought out more people contemplating suicide-by-bridge.  Not that there were more jumpers but the number of talk-downs increased.  That extra activity helped push through the suicide barrier project.  Now we've got a beautiful bridge with an ugly cage that's only going to stop people who are too dumb to realize they can park their car on the bridge and use it to climb over the barrier.  And we're still getting an increased number of calls about potential jumpers because of the media coverage.

The Vista Bridge - known as the Suicide Bridge - is the site of at least a few deaths per year, and at least three this year alone. For that reason, a group led by a local Portland couple is advocating for a larger barrier to be constructed.

s16.postimg.org

It took over from the Windows ME Bridge.

"Released on September 14th 2000 as Microsoft's feeble attempt to bridge tomorrow's technology with yesteryear's hardware was Windows Millennium Edition (ME). "

FTFA: City leaders are in favor of the project, but are wary of the cost which is estimated around $2.5 million.

I am not one of these big shot city planners, mayors, council persons, etc., but couldn't they post a security guard there a lot cheaper than that? I know you could get one of those portable guard shacks like I have seen on the Army base I work at, a couple motion lights/cameras, and contract a couple of guards from the lowest bidder for a lot less than $2.5 million for the life of the bridge. (no pun intended)
At least do it until a better more affordable solution or $2.5 million in funding is found.
