Dispatcher: Hello, 911. What is your emergency?

Neighbor: Hey Karen, this is Robb. It's Steve.

Dispatcher: Hey Robb. What is it this time?

Neighbor: He's on fire and running circles in the front yard.

Dispatcher: Again? I'll send Engine 3. Hey, would you mind hollering at him to stop, drop, and roll?

Neighbor: OK, fine. But if he hasn't learned it by now, once more won't help any.

It's cheaper to buy a gas can and fill when you fill the car.

There may be on newer ones, but some friends in a local car club that shall go unnamed used to buy up old vacuums at garage sales to use just for this purpose at their 4th of July Extravaganza.
I have an old video of it from the 1990s somewhere. Many of the vacuums would suck up gasoline for the longest time before igniting.
The best ones would *pop* before they lit up.

They did it in open air, with plenty of beer, not an enclosed garage like the guy in the story.

2013-06-10 09:44:17 AM
I wouldn't imagine using a shop vac to extract gasoline, for starters the gas would be pretty dirty and I wouldn't want to put it in my car or lawn mower.  Second, stirring up gasoline with a fan* seems to be pretty obvious way to get gas fumes.  *ok, vacs don't pull the waste through the fan, but the exaggerated vacuum would be nearly as bad.

It would make sense,  if you were going to do this, to shut the vacuum off once you had the siphon started. From Johnson's comment above that might work.  IF I needed to siphon gas, I think I'd still do what I have in the past, clear tube and/or one long enough to start the siphon long before sucking fuel.

/Whitest kids you know: Rip yo dick off.

If they came to that conclusion, they're totally wrong.

Google Shop Vac Gasoline and you'll see people ignite themselves in this fashion on a pretty regular basis.

violentsalvation: I vaguely remember a Car Talk puzzler that covered this.

Came here to talk about that. As I recall it wasn't a puzzler but one of their more zany friends who used a regular cannister floor vacuum to start a siphon. The problem is that the air stream that is sucked in is blown through the motor to cool it so the gas vapors ran through an AC electric motor with plenty of sparky sparks jumping all around. Again, if I recall correctly, the motor was blown out of the vacuum and landed on the garage floor with no other damage than the man needing to explain to his wife what a dope he was.

So there I am in the basement of a home, in New York City, looking at the remains of a fire. This clever New Yorker would get out the cleaning bill for her oil burner service. Man, I'm glad I don't have to deal with fixing oil burners down here.

Thanks for reminding me why I left.
