Tig Notaro is 80 now? DAMN.

Sure, the funnier ones are dead. Why not. Although, her bit on "Louie" was classic.

Joan Rivers is actually funnier as an 80 year old than when she was middle-aged even with the same schtick. It's just funnier coming from an old woman.

It's Carol Burnett's birthday?

Both of these posts are important to note.  Especially Amy Poehler's jacket choice....

Rosanne isn't 80.

I didn't know Victoria Jackson was that old.

Thank you, kind sir, for making the joke we all wanted to make but were afraid of being pelted with rotten produce for.

She is worse than fingernails on a chalkboard!!!!!

My favorite memory of her is when Johnny Carson pulled the Thatcher prank on her...

Her roast on Comedy Central was one of the better ones (I thought).

That's ok, she's not that funny either.

She was the subject of a documentary called "Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work". After watching it, I am now a fan. Even in her advanced age, her work ethic is incredible. She has really devoted a huge part of her life to being the best comedianne and joke writer out there. Her file cabinet full of jokes is really a sight to behold.

Funny yes, funnier than Carol Burnett? Not even close

"Comedienne" is such a dated, sexist term. It implies there's something unusual about a funny person who's also a woman. Haven't we gotten past that yet?

Show her some of the respect she's earned, submitter.  Rivers has been making people laugh in six different decades! And that's not too shabby, for a Jewess.

Thanks to Joan and Johnny Carson's to-the-grave grudge, we've been inflicted with Jay Leno and the remnants of the National Broadcast Company prime time schedule.

semiotix: "Comedienne" is such a dated, sexist term. It implies there's something unusual about a funny person who's also a woman. Haven't we gotten past that yet?

Nope. If you want the flamebait reason, it's because "funny" covers a lot of territory, and stand-up is only one tiny piece, but women who stand up with a mic and say funny things are still relatively rare, and the ones who break out of the I'm-a-girl-I-make-jokes-about-girl-stuff rut are even fewer.

OR, maybe we have different words because that's what was done by the people from whom we have obtained language, and language that changes too fast becomes meaningless, and people holding on to lingusitic convention are not doing it out of sexism, as many a shrill, pancake-titted harpy will insist, but simply because it works? "Comedienne" simply adds information to "comedy-slingin'-person".

Don't get me started on males having to share "mankind" with women, even though they have their own damn word...

I can't think of a funnier one who's still working. Carol Burnett is great but when's the last time you heard of her doing anything other than griping about parodies of her?

Woah,. she's 80?!

Settle down there, princess. The joke, such as it was, was in the next line. I never claimed I was a comediatrix.

I'll have to check that out. I never really cared for her (I know enough cantankerous old Jewish women, thank you) but she really won me over when her and her daughter did a red carpet fashion preview on Talk Soup a few years back. I never watch such things and just happened to get stuck at my in-laws for some social function and we all ended up viewing it. They had some shabbily dressed fat guy with them, and for each new celebrity, after Joan and Melissa had made their learned fashion comments, he would say crude things about how the dresses made the woman's breasts stand out. Then they would go right on, deadpan, like he had just made some equally learned comment. It wasn't too long before we were all laughing, then when somebody wore a very revealing outfit and he just said "boing" we all cracked up. And to this very day, if a lady wears something that shows a bit too much cleavage at church, I can say "boing" and get mrs varmitydog or stuffy old aunt Annie to crack a smile.

I suppose that's not a very well known comedy bit, but to me it's one of the all time classics.

This. Louie deserves an Emmy just for making Joan Rivers awesome. The episode with Dane Cook was also great.

To each their own ,but Tig telling a joke usually feels like Buzz Killington telling a story. Definitely more miss than hit with her.

This times infinity.

No, you're thinking of Lucille Ball and her husband making her "splain some fang".

I loved that show!

the beauty of Joan Rivers is she'll do a few old corny bits just to set you up to catch you off guard and knock you on your ass with something brutal.  she's also never sat back on her laurels and coasted.

She was Boy George's BFF for a while.

I'm not a huge fan of Rivers, but she was awesome in that episode of Louie.

"How many blowjobs do you think I had to give to get to the top?"
"I dunno... 40?"
*smack*
"ZERO!"

She raised hell when people made jokes about her daughter.

That, from someone that has made a career out of making jokes about people's daughters. Fark her. Johnny Carson was right.

She's a farking biatch.  I used to have to deal with her on a semi regular basis.  Her assistant however was very nice and helpful
