He carried the bag in his mouth to his owner Gumnerd Thongmak's house and barked loudly to get his attention.

As opposed to a giant baby I suppose?  Cause that would be news.

a cat would have made sure to leave plenty of "scent marker" on the bag, and wondered why we're too dumb to notice.

... so i guess the award goes to the dog, who knows how dumb we are.

Would need to be a really big cat or a really premature baby...
Anyway, many animals recognize babies and act accordingly : protect, or free meal.
Most importantly, like Bruce Lee said: "it's all about the individual, not the species!" or something along those lines...

All the more reason I prefer the company of animals over that of humans.

me too, but I respect their limitations. doggie people have the idea that if a pet is not useful and/or subservient, it will somehow degenerate the whole household as well as the human.

Most dogs probably would have, too.

I think maybe the dog wanted the yummy meat inside the bag, and was taking it back to its masters to have them open it up for him. He was probably pretty pissed when the meat inside was seized and not shared.

1. I had a cat that would fetch better than any dog. I could throw the toy up a tree, and the cat would fetch it and bring it back to me. Anywhere I'd throw it, he'd find it and bring it back.

2. All this talk about cat limitations, and yet nobody mentions that most dogs can't take a non-messy crap without a human's help.

3. A nice big parrot would have rescued the baby AND sang lullabies to comfort it.

So the dog supposedly found the baby in a garbage bag at a roadside dump and carried it all the way home, where its (the dog's) owners discovered it.

How do they know where the dog found the baby?

Thai Bangkaew (Wikipedia)

Legend has it that the third abbot of Bangkaew Temple, the respected Luang Puh Maak Metharee, was known for mercy and giving care to all living things. An old Bangkaew villager named Tah Nim gave the abbot a native biatch. Because she was pregnant without any dog in the area, her mating was thought to be either a jackal (Canis aureus) or a dhole (Cuon alpinus) living in the surrounding forest. A chromosome study of Thai Bangkaew dog confirmed that the breed is the result of domestic dog and jackal interbreed. The resulting litter produced longhaired puppies of black and dark brown coloration. Luang Puh Maak Metharee raised the resulting puppies, four females.Seasonal rain produced flooding, a natural barrier that limited the dogs contributing to the gene pool. Inbreeding that took place led to the creation of the Thai Bangkaew Dogs. From then on the breed has been selectively bred and has become one of the most favored varieties of Thai dogs.

Well, Wikipedia plus a little Fark filtering. So, it was a 50/50 golden jackal hybrid domesticated through multiple generations of inbreeding. A eastern Hemisphere coydog, really.

I suspect my older cat would have pulled a 'Lassie' and made a fuss til I followed him. The younger one I can't fathom; he acts like a complete moron, but if there's a cat-related mess on the floor (the old one has a barfing condition) he'll drag things like paper or plastic bags over it to cover, as well as stand by his food dish pawing at the floor to let me know something is amiss. He's also discovered how elastic works. I expect some day he'll learn how to open doors and then we're all screwed. He'd probably have tried to drag the baby... or just smothered it with his fat body.

My cat learned to open screen door.  It did just that Aug.13, 2007, in the evening as I was making dinner.  It didn't come back.  We looked all over until we found he was hit by a car.  If it had been a dumb animal it might still be alive.  We  missed him terribly.

It began to learn at a geometric rate, quickly becoming self-aware.

Human decisions are removed from tuna purchases. In a panic, they try to distract it with a laser pointer...

Me too.

Animals usually don't cause stress as humans tend to do... Unless you come face to face with a huge animal that wants to eat you and you're unarmed...

Dogs - They'll come at you sideways. It's how they think. It's how they move.

Sidle up and smile. Hit you where you're weak.
