Maybe, maybe not.
Hartnell, Troughton, Perwtee, Baker, Eccleston, and Tennant were hardly unknowns when they were cast.

The same source says the BBC is going to announce the new Doctor Saturday night (which is right about now, isn't it) so if they don't, the whole story is bullocks.

So John Slattery is going to be the new Doctor?

Nice!!

Martinis and hookers for everybody.

No, fark that retcon. The Howard Stark from Captain America was a snake oil seller and a disgrace. Looked like a bum.

Compare that to the grace and elegance of Slattery's Howard:

Actually looks like a major American entrepreneur. And he looks like Walt Disney to boot, which makes total sense.

Everyone knows, given Moffat is writing it, Hugh Grant is #12.

(Although I still wish, if they're doing the John Hurt is #9, that they would've used Richard E. Grant for that, given the whole Shalka thing)

There have been no new Doctor Who's since Tom Baker.  I just could not get into any of them.  As far as I am concerned, Tom Baker was THE FINAL Doctor Who.

Ok, as far as the "sex symbol" complaints, I will bite. Fine. But what the fark does age have to do with it? So what if the doctor is young, as long as they can pull off the role!

I'm not sure anyone really considers Matt Smith a "sex symbol."

Oh, I don't know. Judging from the threads here people have asked for and against going with a black man, white man, Studman69 (ok, maybe not), a woman or any number of things. Some feel the Doctor should remain as a British white wanker. Others a different choice. All speculation, and none of us have a say in it so its entertaining to voice it.

2013-06-08 05:54:21 PM
I don't think the Doctor should be black because I doubt the current batch of writers would know how to deal with it. They couldn't ignore it and the humor probably would come across as cringe-worthy. Better they write what they know, and I'm sure they are all pasty white men.

Looking at the three nuDoctors I think it's pretty clear that they were selected because they were easy on the eyes and would appeal to a younger audience.  I can't see them casting a William Hartnell type today and getting away with it, as much as I'd like that to happen.

I've actually be a bit thrown by how colorblind the casting for Doctor Who has been. They've actually been using black people where it doesn't actually make any sense.

Well it's one thing to cast a supporting actor like Mickey or Martha or a one-off character, but the Doctor frequently calls attention to his appearance and they couldn't just ignore it like they do those guys. I just can't see a bunch of British white guys write a good black Doctor without it just coming across terrible. Like when Stephen King tries to write in the voice of a black woman.

Are you implying that they would have to use black stereotypes for a black actor to be a strong enough main character?

Nope. Rumor is he's still in consideration to play Daredevil if/when Marvel gets around to him.

Yea, no I understand your point. You are most likely spot on with the call, just saying there has been a lot of threads with people arguing for and against lately.

I agree. And there will be constant arguing about the choice even after the Doctor is chosen. Can't make everybody happy I suppose

I dunno, the British "black experience" isn't really the same as the American one. You could easily write the Doctor from a colorblind standpoint, and it wouldn't really feel  wrong, not even to Americans. Look at the step-father on "Arrow". His "blackness" and his "Britishness" combine to create a character that you don't have to think about in racial terms.

No, it wasn't meant to be racist or misogynistic.  I know the show is about change, but changing skin color or gender is a change that can potentially kill the show and isn't needed.
