You mean sugar and water do nothing?

I'm sure this will be great news in my family as my diabetic grandfather springs back to life. I shall away to his final resting place post haste.

No, no.  Squatting is what they cause.

Huh. Color me surprised. I knew they used it in the NICU on premies and with babies on PGE1 to reduce the occurrence of apnea spells.

they should test the caffeine-free 5 hour energy and see if the taurine, b12, and whatever else they put in has any advantage over just sugar water.

Red Bull gets everything right except soccer. They don't get that fans don't want to root for a team that has corporate branding right there on the name of the team itself. On the shirt? Fine. The stadium? Hell, we've got something else we call the place, go ahead. The team itself? Get farked.

There is an rx version too, but it is IV.

I don't drink this shiat because I require caffeine to survive the day.

I drink this shiat because it has caffeine (which I require to survive the day), it's farking delicious, and stops me from sucking down 3 or 4 coca colas. Oh, and you can buy it at any gas station and be guaranteed of uniform quality (unlike coffee).

2013-06-08 11:02:08 AM
Oh, and since this is going to devolve into an energy drink debate, the best I've ever had is Bawls. Prettymuch just caffeine and guarana. Almost impossible to get around here, though. Very seriously considering buying an entire pallet of it.

It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion
It is by the Beans of Java that thoughts acquire speed
The hands acquire a shaking
The shaking becomes a warning
It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion.

This is what I say. I've been saying it forever. I say it all the time. I tell the guy I work with why you drink that coffee? just get some caffeine pills. Save some money. Hey man, hey man, hey man hey man hey man hey man just get the pills they just as good they're cheaper.

It's a conference paper. They typically aren't posted online. I would wager, though, that if there were methodological errors at a level that could be comprehended by the average farker, either the conference attendees (who LOVE opportunities to show that they are smarter than whoever is standing at the podium) or the neuroscientist who co-authored the study would have noticed and said something (which would have made it into TFA, since journalists love to write about bickering academics, so that they can call the findings "controversial").

The study says that a 5hr Energy does nothing more than give you the equivalent of 2 cups of coffee in caffeine and that the rest of the junk is useless, yet I can drink 2 cups of coffee and do so very often and feel pretty normal, but on the rare occasions I drink one of those little 5hr things I feel like I'm wired on some sort of liquid meth for a few hours.

I don't care what the study says, they aren't the same thing (at least to my body), those drinks are crazy

Placebo, dude.

Psychosomatic reaction to slick advertising. They told you it would work, and you couldn't read their wall-o-text disclaimer fast enough in their TV ads, and so you believed it would work.

Taurine is a fast burning amino acid and does in fact give you energy as does vitamin B

Unfortunately there is so little of these chemicals in them the effects are non existant.

Taurine was actually banned in canada for some time in drink form (no idea why)

2013-06-08 12:08:10 PM
And malt liquor will get you drunker cheaper but people persist in drinking scotch, beer, and wine.

FWIW, the best migraine advice I got was from a mall opthamologist (opthamologist not optometrist) who told me that the best way to stop a migraine from forming was to get to the caffeine while I still saw the halo, and said if I didn't have excedrin, drink a Mountain Dew.

For me, that seems to turn a 3 day migraine into a bad headache, or even no headache.

1) Buy caffeine tablets (~ $5 for 100 x 200mg pills @ amazon, that's 20,000 mg for under $6

2) Drink the caffeine tablets with whatever drink you want

// no doz?
$45 for 60 x 200mg)

// not even going to do the comparison with redbull or 5 hour energy, the markup is astounding.

All I know is energy drinks give me more energy, make me less edgy, and last longer than coffee. Coffee gets me too wired and I crash too fast.

Mister Peejay: But coffee tastes *good*.

Coffee is OK, but I'll only drink it when I don't want to blow money on an energy drink. Anyone who spends more than $1 on a cup of coffee is f*cking stupid.

http://www.dpsnutrition.net/i/8525/serious-nutrition-solutions-caffe in e-501-tabs.htm

$15.99 for 501x200mg ; this is the site I used to get my caffeine tabs from.

Nowadays they just set off panic attacks and prolong manias, so I avoid anything with caffeine in it.  Haven't had a shred of caffeine for just under a year now.

try shotgunning two cups of hot coffee in 15 seconds and see how it makes you feel? it takes me 30 minutes or more to drink that much coffee

I don't take 5 hour energy, I take 5 minute naps (well usually more like 10 minutes)

This was one of the big benefits we won against management in our last pilots strike against American.

FunkOut : Are they claiming B vitamins are useless?

The recommended 2.4 micrograms of B12 from other sources, so adding it to an energy drink is useless.

// unless you are on some weirdo super 'healthy' diet where you don't eat any meat, or cheese. In which case, why are you downing energy drinks?

You'd be surprised at the junk food vegans. Oreos and PBR are vegan.

I'll take date squares and tea over energy products.

Yeah, its no different than alcohol.  Or probably any other drug.  Slamming 3 shots of vodka will get you drunker, quicker, than the same amount in one drink you nurse over 30 minutes-1 hour.

Take it to the extreme... if I drink a 5th of vodka over a 10 hour period, I'm going to have a nice buzz going and eventually be somewhat drunk.  If I slam an entire 5th of vodka- "crazy Russian on Youtube" style in a minute, I'm going to feel... well, probably nothing because I'd be blacked out drunk.

FunkOut: Are they claiming B vitamins are useless?

Megadoses of B Vitamins are useless. They're water soluable and removed from circulation by the kidneys, so your body will only keep what it needs to function.

B12 shots, in the absence of Cyanide Poisoning or Pernicious Anemia are one of the biggest scams out there for making money off gullable people.

Of course, megadoses of Fat-Soluable Vitamins will kill you, so there's also that.
