Perhaps the greatest moment of Emmer's gubernatorial crusade came when he declared war on waiters and waitresses by calling for Minnesota to ower their minimum wage. Emmer's rationale for this proposal was that many waiters and waitresses earn six figures annually and, thus, should be more reliant on tips.

Holy shiat. He..he really said that? He thinks the AVERAGE waiter makes $100,000 a year?

In fairness it's highly unlikely he has any idea what the term average means or how you might go about calculating it.

He didn't say "average", he said "many".
Which is also wrong by almost any measure, unless you take "many" to mean "like, ten".

Anyway, the guy's a typical Republican... when it comes to politics and policy, you can expect him to be a bit of an asshole.
But he's nowhere near Bachmann territory.

Two of those six figures are to the right of the decimal point.

I wonder if he ever gets served anything in a restaurant which isn't disgustingly contaminated somehow.

He defended the dubious legality of an amendment he supported in the Legislature that attempted to block any federal laws in that did not have the support of the state government, which would have essentially turned Minnesota into its own republic.

Bluster away, gasbag.

Only way he could win anything in this state is if he runs in Bachmann's district, and the rest of the state where Meth is not a food group were not allowed to vote against him. Emmer needs to be locked in a room with fifty waiters and waitresses.  They can then proceed to kick him to death with their diamond-tipped/encrusted jackboots made by Prada.

If a waiter is making Minnesota's minimum wage, for them to make even half of their six figure salary off of the wage rather than tips they would have to work a minimum of 8,130 hours during a year, an average of 156 hours a week.

Not that it diminishes your point in the slightest, but he didn't say that they year 6 figures 'on average'. His quote from TFA says "there are some".  I suppose that it is possible that 'there are some' waiters/waitresses making over 6 figures assuming a strict definition of some being >1.

I didn't use the word average.

For the supposed "fact" to be valid to the level of the minimum wage, the waiter making 6 figures would have to be making that amount of money while be paid minimum wage by their employer.

Minnesota is kind of weird like that. Al Franken's race was also very, very close. Remember the months-long recount? It was mainly to keep a Democratic senator out of the Senate for as long as possible during the health insurance reform thing, but the race was still close.

Franken also ran in 2008, getting the Obama bump. Emmer ran for governor in 2010, getting the teabagger bump.

The state is reliably light-blue for presidential races, but third-party candidates can siphon votes and swing statewide offices either way. And like a lot of states, it has a couple of urban areas (Minneapolis-St. Paul and Duluth) and a lot of rural space, so it's easy for Republicans like Bachmann to find a home.

How many of them work at high-end places?

I mean I think it's possible at a very high end restaurant. If you cleared $400 in tips for 250 days, that would be 100k. If you had sales of $2700(9 tables of $300), that's ~15%. I'm not even taking in to account the wage. There are probably a few waiters that could pull it off. Still a hugely farking stupid remark though.

Having dated a number of waiters in my time - there are a small percentage that pull it off.  They are typically lifers who have worked for the same high end restaurant for years and have built up a list of regulars.  I know one guy who was given a small share of the profits to keep him.
