Proceed quietly about your business. It may take some time for diplomats to determine who has been insulted, who was insulted more, and by how much. They're experts. Leave them to their work.

No, no, no, he was just expressing condolences to the Chinese people as a general aside, not anything to do with the Algerian crisis.

President Hollande is on a three-day state visit to Japan, the first by a French president in 17 years.

WTF, srsly?  Like, no other French president has bothered to visit the world's 3rd largest economy (by GDP) since the mid-90s?

o_O

At least Hollande didn't take the guy out:

Then again, if he did, he'd probably have been braver than the US, given the general unwillingness to take China to the woodshed.

The worst part is that it was most probably Chirac, and he must have gone there just to see Sumos wrestle since he's a well-known Sumo fan...

Maybe the Japanese hasn't visited French either, or bought any of their planes of something.

I wonder how the Japanese can retaliate, confusing countries won't work. But confusing cheeses or wines might work.

Or suggest that the French surrendered to the Germans in WW2 would probably go over well (hint, France didn't surrender to the Germans in WW2. They, along with the British, fought and lost).

Oh, and there must be some good Napoleon insults as well.
