FTFA: (Rickrolling) began in 2008 on 4chan...

Wild. Last week someone on Slate said it began in 2009. And before that we had a link tracing it to 2001.
I'm pretty sure it all traces back to an upload by "cotter548." The googles bear this out.
That would make the origin date a pretty solid May 15, 2007.

Really?  The Magic Flute by Mozart was released in 1791. That's like hundreds of years ago.

submitter shouldn't be blamed.......let's drag the dim witted admin who greenlighted it out and have a public flogging.

Wow, I hate so many of those songs, and now so many are stuck in my head.  Thanks!

Merely posting 'that's a horrid list' doesn't nearly do it justice.

That's a fu*king horrid list.

There. That's better.

If you're gonna use an REM song, don't go with the obvious.  How about some love "You Are the Everything"

2013-06-07 01:42:56 PM
I have no idea how that was a Top 25 Anything but it at least had a bunch of weird trivia.  Playing the same REM song on repeat for 12 hours gets cows to make more milk?  Poor cows.  Poor farmer.

Wow.  So, I was alive when Mozart wrote The Magic Flute?

Man...  Wish I could have seen him live.  Did he play Yankee Stadium?

14. "Run the World (Girls)" (Beyoncé)The Song That Woke up the Astronauts
As the astronauts of Atlantis orbited the Earth during NASA's final space shuttle mission, they experienced 15 sunrises and sunsets every day. Consequently, their circadian rhythms were thrown off a little. Since a regular alarm clock just wouldn't cut it, on July 16, 2011, the crew received a special wake-up call from R&B diva Beyonce?. The superstar got the astronauts out of bed with her girl-power anthem "Run the World (Girls)." Then she gave a shout-out to the only woman on the four-person crew, Sandy Magnus: "This song is especially for my girl Sandy, and all the women who've taken us to space with them, and the girls who are our future explorers." Was it is a cheesy publicity stunt to promote her new album? You bet! But it beats waking up to a buzzer.

Oh cool, so Beyonce is a sexist pig.
Also severely misinformed.

2 live crew was on there.  A nudge closer to Idiocracy.

Well, considering their #1 pick, I think it's safe to say we've been there for quite some time.

2013-06-07 01:55:57 PM
I'm sorry but "Across The Universe" should not be on this list.  Originally I was gonna state that "All You Need Is Love" should be on the list, but when I saw #1 I knew I was being trolled.  So "ATU" should be out because it doesn't belong on this pile of crap.

Also: subby and author?  You can both DIAF.

Not insightful

2013-06-07 02:01:38 PM
FYI, its not a list of the *best* songs from the past 25 years.  And using the word "powerful" was probably a bad idea.

Its a list of songs that have spawned cultural change.  Sometimes in an odd fashion.

Read the article... I think its actually kinda cool.

Example: They're not saying "Pretty Woman" by 2 Live Crew is a good song.  They added it to the list because that song went all the way up to the US Supreme Court to decide what is/is not acceptable in terms of sampling and parody.  And 2 Live Crew won, which means it significantly changed US law.

I'm pretty sure this list is meant to be a giant piss-take.

Doesn't mean it's "good" certainly.

Unless "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" or "These Things Take Time" are on the list, the list is rubbish.

Tool's song 'Wing for Mary' is pretty powerful.  Whatever that means.
'Crack the Skye' by Mastodon is pretty powerful too.

I actually expected to see songs like God's going to cut you down by Cash and what we got is drivel.

What do we know about this list?
It was written by somebody from Chicago, since it had the super bowl shuffle on it.
It was written by somebody who is math impaired, since 25 years ago was 1988.
It was written by someone who was a kid when that purple dinosaur was popular, because everyone else just considers it to be annoying.

Best part of the article

Lines like "Big hairy woman, you need to shave your stuff," now reside in law libraries across the country.

I wonder what the law clerk was thinking when transcribing those lines from the highest justice in the land

way past his prime when I saw him live, a shady little joint off the strip in Vegas, he was all fat and stoned, kinda sad.

I'll admit I only skimmed the list, but what was the criteria for "a powerful song"?

Does this include songs they play at arenas during sporting events to rile the crowd up and do crazy dances in the ailes?

/whar did ya come from whar did ya go? Whar did ya come from Cotton Eye Joe.

If you celebrate MLK Day in Arizona, you have Public Enemy to thank for that. Their song "By the Time I Get to Arizona" brought Arizona's dismissal of the holiday to national attention, forcing the state legislature to reverse its decision. And Arizona was never again seen as a state of blind hatred, racism, and all-in-all backwardness.
