I'll bite: libertarianism in itself is a mental health issue. If you think conservatives are selfish, libertarians put them to shame.

He has no experience with mental health himself, so it's not surprising.

I want to say that this man is a snake oil salesman.  Hypocrisy and cognitive dissonance do not apply when there are gullible rubes to be fleeced.

But I honestly wonder if he's smart enough to con.

A state that has given us a traitor turtle who should be tried for treason and a morally deficient ignoramus who should be permanently institutionalised.

Mental health as a 'hoax' is, from what I can tell, part of the Tea Party plank.

Basically it allows one to fully buy into the idea that you have gotten what you deserve.  If you were sick, then that's not true- and that runs counter to the tea party axiom that everyone has gotten what they deserve (social Darwinism).

He graduated from Duke. Duke sucks, but their medical school certainly does NOT suck.

Then again, he is an eye doctor, I'm sure its been many years since he studied anything about mental heath.

Um...human behavior is not an organ. Granted there are (mostly unknown) biological factors in the brain, but psychiatry does not study the human brain, neurology does.

It kind of struck me as a preemptive attempt to prevent mental health issues from being an impediment to gun ownership

FTA: it is all too easy for a psychiatrist to label a person's disagreement with the psychiatrist's political beliefs a mental disorder

Not just political--religious as well.  Which is usually only a threat for crazy people.

For instance, should the government take away sick children of Jehovah's Witnesses or Christian Scientists?

In that RAND PAUL possesses an alien psyche, has a perspective making it difficult to identify with ordinary people, and clearly does not think like a human being?  Yes.

"I've never agreed with psychiatry, ever."

"You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do."

"There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance."

"There's ways of vitamins and through exercise and various things."

"When you talk about emotional, chemical imbalances in people, there is no science behind that."

"People go for help, but their lives don't get better because of those [psychiatric] drugs. They get worse. They feel numb and they're told that's a good thing. It's how you degrade a society -- by drugging the piss out of it."

- Rand Paul, Operating Thetan

A hoax? I seriously doubt there's much conspiracy going on in the mental health field, per se. "Big Pharma" excluded.

I don't give a crap about Rand Paul, but the article and the quotes from Rand in the article don't jive.

For example:

"further research is necessary to firmly establish ADHD as a brain disorder. This is not unique to ADHD, but applies as well to most psychiatric disorders, including disabling diseases such as schizophrenia."

No such thing as schizophrenia
?

Where does he say there's no such thing as schizophrenia?  He's talking about differentiating between physical and psychological disorders.

I think so, I mean it's all well and good for an adult to refuse treatment for themselves, but sentencing kids to die because they came outta the wrong person is idiotic.
